get your beautyrest

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, there’s been a lot of shuffling going on in the guest room.  I hand painted a bed in a Bavarian style and started decorating the entire room around it.  Then, after I had it for only a few months, I sold it.

Now, I like change and I’m fickle when it comes to decorating, but I’m not quite that fickle.  I really loved this bed and it was hard to sell it, but there was a good reason…

I had the opportunity to partner with Beautyrest and get a luxurious, queen-sized mattress for our guest room – a Beautyrest Black mattress.  I selected the Kate model.

Our guests have been sleeping on a low-end full sized mattress for about 12 years.  We’ve padded it with memory foam and did everything we could do to disguise the cheap quality, but there wasn’t anything we could do to make it larger.  We had been talking about upgrading, anyway, so this gave us the push to do it.

I sold the Bavarian bed and bought a French reproduction metal bed frame (on sale and with my credit card points, woohoo!)  The stairway leading up to our second floor is really tight, so we had our doubts of even being able to fit a queen bed up there.  Thankfully, Beautyrest carries a split queen box spring foundation for this mattress, so we were able to make it work!

Of course, Jeff and I went up and immediately plopped on the bed.  Oh my.  Our guests are in for a huge treat.  Even without the bedding, the mattress just feels nice.

There’s a lot of science that goes in the details…stuff that’s way over my head like Techno Luxe, Pocketed Coil Technology and Micro Diamond Infused AirCool Memory Foam.  What that means to me, is that it has all been designed with the latest technology to prevent tossing and turning, to relieve pressure points, to keep you cool and to give you a comfy, dead-to-the-world night sleep.

The bed is for our guest room, but Jeff and I couldn’t resist playing guest in our own home, so we could test it out.  You know…just make sure it’s okay.

Now, I’m pretty picky about beds.  I sleep on my stomach and side, so if the mattress isn’t comfy, I end up with aching hips and a sore back in the morning.  I also think any bed different than my bed can take a few nights to get used to, so I wasn’t sure what to expect the first night.

I climbed up in bed and nestled under the blankets.  I could feel myself sinking into the memory foam, yet there was support at the same time from the coils.  I snuggled on my side, stretched out on my back and finally turned on my stomach.  I couldn’t tell you what happened next, because I was blissfully unaware of the world for the next eight hours.  I fell asleep fast and stayed asleep.  When I did wake up, I admit that I hit the snooze three times.  The only downside to a comfy bed is that it’s hard to get out of in the morning!

If it weren’t for the fact that we can’t fit a regular box spring up the stairs, we would consider claiming the Beautyrest Black for ourselves!  But, for now, it’s going to stay where it is, to be a luxurious bed for our guests to experience.  (I bet Jeff’s parents are shedding tears of joy as they’re reading this!)

Now, you all know I’m a bargain shopper, so I love buying things that are used and need a bit of love.  I have a few exceptions to that, though…the family room sofa, queen bed frames (because they didn’t make queen sized beds in the 1800’s) and mattresses.  With all of the money saved on all of my thrifted and found purchases, I think these are worth the splurge.  Especially the mattress, since we statistically spend 1/3 of our lives in bed.  And that one third is pretty important, because it helps us be fresh, alert and ready to reupholster, paint, blog, style, snap pictures and write blog posts the other two thirds.  That’s what getting your Beautyrest is all about!

Disclosure: This post is a part of a compensated partnership with Simmons Beautyrest Black to review this mattress.  All opinions, words and images are my own.

  1. Marian,
Your new mattress in the guest bedroom looks so luxurious and comfy! I am glad to know that we aren’t the only ones who had to “test” sleep the guest bedroom mattress when we bought a new one about five years ago. We bought a new mattress for our master last year and upgraded to a King size and I must tell you the extra room is heavenly!

  2. Hi Miriam,
I so admire your talent to turn ordinary into extraordinary!
Can you please give the source for the queen size metal bed frame you have in your guest room? I have an old barn board wall in my master bedroom that it would look great against.
    Thanks so much!

  3. The mattress and the box springs don’t have to go together… you could leave the split box spring upstairs with your current mattress on it, and put the new mattress on the current box spring in your master. I would have a hard time knowing that mattress was in my house not being slept on most nights… 🙂

  4. Marian, you don’t know me, but could I please have an invite for a night away from my mattress?
It looks and sounds like it feels luxurious. Of course, I’m kidding about the invite, but you’ve given me something to think about for my guest rooms. I would have been sad to sell your Bavarian style bed, too! I wish I’d gotten there first!

  5. I am a firm believer in not skimping on your mattress. Getting a good night’s rest is one of the most vital things we can do to perform our daily lives. I have had my eye on this brand for a while. Looks like I will be checking into it further! Thanks!

  6. My husband and I traded in our 15 year old king mattress last year for a king Beautyrest Black mattress. For years, I would wake up with aching hips (I’m a side sleeper). From day one, this mattress has been heaven – no breaking in period, it was comfortable from the first night. And best of all – no more aching hips!

  7. I have never seen a more beautiful mattress. My goodness! I’d almost hate to cover it up (almost:). I can’t remember what it feels like to get a good night’s sleep. I wake up often in the night and most certainly wake up sore every morning. This mattress sounds divine! If they ever want to partner with you for a giveaway count me in! 🙂 And the guest room is simply lovely!

  8. I’m forwarding this post on to my daughter tonight! She needs a new mattress for her guest room too. Maybe she’ll get the hint.
I enjoy your blog and love seeing the transformations on all the things you work on. You are a very talented young lady with a ton of energy!

  9. I love your sconces. Where did you get them? I desperately need bedside lighting and have no space.

  10. I used to work at a furniture and mattress store – we sold Serta mattresses but most mattress manufacturers do make split queen boxspring foundations. They’re great for getting in narrow hallways or up tight stairwells. The other thing most people aren’t aware of is that you can also get different height boxspring foundation units too! A lot of today’s mattresses are so thick they can be too tall on certain bed frames – so ask for a low profile box, it’s usually about 3 inches shorter than the regular box.
