Well, the Lucketts Spring Market just wouldn’t be the same without torrential downpours and some point. Thankfully, we got them out of the way last night and the weather forecast says partly sunny with a high of 68 for the weekend. It sounds like perfection! Unfortunately, though, the rain last night caused a lot of flooding. One of my tents collapsed under the weight of the two ponds that formed in the tarp. Thankfully, the tarp did what it’s supposed to do and everything inside was clean, dry and unharmed. Jeff and his dad fixed it all up, so my mother-in-law and I could have a nice lunch at my favorite farm-to-table restaurant. Jeff’s a good guy…he knew that a day driving to Lucketts to deal with a collapsed tent wouldn’t be the best for me on “Lucketts Eve.”
I thought I would share one of my favorite furniture pieces I’m bringing to the market this year (actually, it’s already there, but you know…). I’ve had a lot of favorites this year, it seems. I loved this piece from the moment I spotted it on Craig’s List. I immediately e-mailed the listing to my dad and asked him to get it for me. (My dad is unofficially “Colonel Mustard Seed’s Moving & Storage”.)
Here’s how it started…
It’s a very well built piece and I loved the bead board back and crackled texture on the doors. It was just dark and visually heavy.
I used Maria’s cabinet, from Dreamy Whites, as inspiration…
…and painted it in MMSMP Eulalie’s Sky. I didn’t prep the piece at all, but used a little bonding agent to help with adhesion. It ended up needing one full coat and a quick second coat. I painted the bead board back and door panels in Ironstone.
I distressed it a bit and finished the entire piece in Hemp Oil.
…and here’s the result…
I swapped out the wood knob for a vintage glass knob from my hardware stash.
As I was thinking through my space for Lucketts this year, I knew I wanted a big hutch or cabinet to add height and provide a focal point.
And this piece is it!

the cupboard is lovely. i just boxwooded up another buffet on the blog today with milk paint and absolutely re-fell in love with that colour from your paint line. we made it down here with very little rain during our drive today which is surprising as we always on road trips hit rain on our way anywhere. all holed up in gettysburg with you tonight after a great dinner downtown.

Nice old upper. You made a great display cabinet out of it! Paint is great! Could have used some more wood or feet at the bottom though. Looks like an old upper sitting on the floor to me. But I know what old uppers look like cause I use them everyday!
I agree, but it would be so easy to build a base to balance it out.

Just curious- I haven’t heard that term before- what is an “upper”?
It means it’s an upper cabinet that would sit on a base. I thought this one might be that, but it would be huge on a base…way too big for most rooms. It looks to me like a custom built piece that someone made that size.

Sure wish I could get to Luckett’s (from Wisconsin) this year, but alas. Perhaps I can fit it in next year. But the chance of hot, sultry, wet weather causes me pause. Keep your fingers crossed.

What a difference a little (MMSP milk) paint makes! That cabinet looks SO much better after getting the Mustard Seed treatment! …And it also makes a perfect display cabinet for ironstone. 😉
