As I was thoroughly organizing the studio through February and March, I came to the conclusion that one person can only use so many antique and vintage art boxes! Don’t get me wrong, I am perfectly willing to extensively explore and discover the true limits of the number of art boxes one person can own, but I wanted to spread the love around to those who might want to explore that territory, too. I currently have two antique oil paint boxes, five watercolor boxes (two English Victorian and three mid-century French), a drafting box, two pastel boxes, and several smaller boxes for pencils, nibs, etc. What can I say? I love art supplies and pretty containers. I will offer no other excuses or clarifiers.
The fact is, though, it is important to me to use things I have. It’s okay if using them means displaying them, admiring them, or actually storing art supplies in them. To me, that’s the joy of owning something – interacting with it in a meaningful way. If it’s stored away, unseen and unused, what’s the purpose?
So, I decided to give away one of my mid-century French watercolor boxes.
This one, to be specific…
I purchased this particular mid-century watercolor box off of Etsy almost a year ago. What caught my eye immediately was the striking color of the paint on the wooden box as well as the pretty blue lettering. I also love the label on the inside of the lid.
And, I already started outfitting it for the future owner. I had custom ceramic palettes made to fit into the dividers…
The latches to hold the box closed are missing, but I just used a large rubber band to hold it shut. The new owner can add clasps or just use the watercolor box on a desk where it won’t matter if it latches.
There is a brush holder in the watercolor box that swivels out of the box, so there is a place to rest brushes and pens, which keeps them handy and prevents them from rolling away. I’ll include a little French escargot pot that is the perfect size for one of the cubbies in the box. Otherwise, it’s ready to fill with your paints, brushes, pencils, and other little supplies.
I have a travel French watercolor box from the same era and I just put the watercolors directly in the wooden pans…

He has taken a homeschool art class from a local artist, and in that class learned from several other local artists as well. That experience helped him love creating art even more. I think he’d enjoy using something that others have also used to create art.

Every time I see Juniper Studio’s art I think of your watercolors. Could you do a collaboration with Jenny? Maybe not as lucrative for you? I love the recent works from Charleston as well as all your other works. So soothing.. I could see lots of people snatching up your work for a beach house, too.

I’ve subscribed for some time & it always feels like a special treat to sit down ,open your newest post and drink it in .I value your perspective and wisdom and the way you dive on in and just make things happen! It’s a lovely idea to share something you’ve found you’re not using – I have a thing for lovely vintage containers & art supplies myself but living further away from Europe (NZ) we do not have the same access to much in the way of truly old objects – the postage !
I’m surfacing from 20 years of home educating 5 children and trying to work out what I do now -there are so many things I love to do and you have most of them covered here .Your recent post on how you organise and get things done was very pertinent for me.
And your family history discoveries ! Delving into mine revealed that the arty streak in my Mum’s family came down from a 3x great Grandfather from Germany we’d been told was a ship’s captain but who was instead an artist ! We have found paintings by him online .It is truly wonderful to be able to touch history in this way .Thank you for what you do and give.
