Mom’s Afternoon Out

My husband has had a lot going on lately and that means I was in desperate need of a break.  Yesterday, my husband stayed home with the kids and gave me the afternoon out.  Woo-hoo!
While I was looking through the piles of junk at my favorite antique haunt, I had a thought that I needed to buy something for you!  My readers.  Well, for one lucky reader.  I’m creeping close to 2000 followers and that calls for a celebration and giveaway.  I decided I would put together “Miss Mustard Seed in a Box” for the winner.  Don’t get worried.  I’m not going to pop out of a large crate that’s delivered to your door step.  I’m going to put together a box of goodies that is very “me.”  Here’s a sneak peek of one of the items…  If you want a hint of what else might be included, you can check out my Favorite Things post.
At the same shop where I shopped for you, I found another pair of doors that I just couldn’t live without.  I’m sick.  I know.  Poor hubby.
But, just look at the hardware, the chippy gray and white paint, the trim!  I absolutely love these and they were only $29 for the pair.  That seems like a rip off after everything I bought for $23 a couple of weeks ago, but this was still a great price.
I think I’m going to hang them on the wall for now, but I would love (for my husband) to make a cabinet around these doors.  Wouldn’t that be amazing?
I also picked up some ironstone.  This covered dish was only $6.00.  The secret is the the other handle is broken, but that’s ok with me.
This large mixing bowl was also only $6.00 due to a crack and a couple of chips.
I also finally gave in a bought a pair of pillows I’ve been eyeing at TJ Maxx for a few months.  There were only two left and one had a teeny imperfection, so I got a discount on that one.  They are down filled and very comfy.  I would love to put them on my family room sofa, but they would spend most of the day on the floor, so that’s not going to work.
The pillows on my guest bed were a little lacking, so I added these into the mix and it give the bed a much more inviting and luxurious look.
I also like that the puckered detail on the pillow plays against the matlasse spread and toile fabric.
I’m using two vintage pillow cases that don’t match, but that’s ok.  It adds a “gathered over time” look to the bed.
Now, I need to find a cute pair of complimentary sheets to fold over the spread.
I had to share one last thing.  Look at this yummy scramble I made out of some of the farm fresh ingredients I received as a trade for my dresser.
This really isn’t becoming a foodie blog, I promise.  I love cooking and have to share an occasional picture.
Make sure to vote for the free consultation contest, if you haven’t already!

  1. I saw those same pillows on clearance at our TJMaxx 2 weeks ago. Then they were gone last week. Just as well. I had already bought 2 smaller feather pillow sets for the kids rooms. Can't wait to see what else you put in the follower giveaway. Congratulations on 2000!

  2. Having a celebrate life day all by yourself…that works for me. Yes, I can relate…summer vacation/kids…is it over yet? I have to laugh about the doors…my husband wouldn't get it..I want to get a window with panes to hang my crochet threat potholders in…he just doesn't get it. hope you enjoyed your day…and look forward to the doors, what will become of them….

  3. I love those doors! And you got a great deal on them. I can't find haunts like that with deals that good around here. What kind of places do you hang out at? All the antique stores around here know what these things are worth. Not fair! LOL

I love everything you picked up and I am so totally gonna enter your giveaway. Congrats on the followers!

  4. Oh, those doors! I am in love. Everything else is lovely as well…the pillows look great on your guest bed. happy weekend:)

  5. simply adore all your new acquisitions.. =)

I love old doors too.. but don't have any in the house..
love the way you give them a new life..

I always believe doors are the mouth and windows the eyes of a house..

Don't you imagine stories about who built them for whom.. who opened them first .. who were the first guests who passed through these doorways.. =)..

I wish they could tell us their stories..

enjoy.. and have a wonderful weekend

  6. It would be OK if you did pop out of the box. I was thinking how wonderful it would be to have you here to help me arrange the clutter on my bookshelves in the living room, I think soon to be dining room and sitting area. But a box of your favorites would be wonderful too, so count me in. Jackie

  7. Oh, I am so glad I recently discovered your blog! I've had fun reading all the old posts, and of course, I would love a chance to win the "Miss Mustard Seed Box." The doors you found are fabulous, and to me, $29 was a steal! I am so inspired by the lovely, comfortable home you have created on such a modest budget and with such a busy life. You are amazing, Miss Mustard Seed!

  8. ok seriously….i think i'm going to buy a plane ticket for you when we buy a new home and redecorate (um, yeah, if that even happens..you know, the SAHM budget thing..argh!)…and have you do the entire thing 🙂 no really…i LOVe the stuff you bought…and i'm loving the guest room..sigh…white, white white! (and RED!)

  9. I would be thrilled if you popped out of a crate on my doorstep! We would start the day scouring all your favorite places and I would find out where you find such wonderful treasures. Yes, I love the doors! Then we'd have a relaxing lunch on the porch, swapping stories about great finds and all the fabulous people we meet along the way! … Sounds like a perfect day!

  10. You know you COULD pop out of a crate! I mean, that would be an awesome give away! And I would sayd, "while you are here, can you give me some advice on this and this and this…."

Um, yeah, that would work for me!!

    LOVE the doors!! Great finds!

    Lou Cinda 🙂

  11. $29?! Seriously??!!
I am uber-jealous. Even if I had the slim chance to find something remotely close to them here in Cali you can bet your bottom that they wouldnt cost ANYTHING even close to $29! Add a zero…..and maybe…..nope, still probably not!

    ENJOY!

ps – the cabinet idea sounds fab 🙂

  12. Where in the world can you find those doors for $29?!! Thats insanely awesome! There's no where here that I could find anything like that for that price! It would be more like $200 probably…Lucky you…can u include those in the giveaway? He he! Love your other finds as well! I actually have an evening to myself tonight (very rare) so I think you've inspired me to head to my fave antique dealer and see if I can score any awesome finds of my own!! Yes, sounds like a fun outing! Happy Friday!

  13. I am a lover of antiques also. My husband says I have radar when it comes to finding antiques stores when we travel. My problem is I have to much and I hate to part with any treasures I have collected over the years. How exciting it would be to find a box on my doorstep full of old treasures from you!

  14. I really like your pillows from TJMaxx. With my master bedroom makeover, I was looking for pillows like that. I frequent TJ Maxx and never saw anything like it. I guess I live in the wrong part of the counrty. I also like your doors. Thanks for sharing them with us.

  15. I love what you just got. I can't wait to see the finished product. Are you going to sell any on your ETSY site?
I love your bedspread! My mom had one just like it!

  16. Just a question that maybe you can answer someday in your blogging thoughts…

Do you ever worry about lead paint when you buy old things – like the doors? If so, how do you handle that? I just bought a bed for my daughter at a yard sale and I was all excited because I paid only $5 for it, but hubby crushed my enthusiasm by saying he wanted to test it for lead content before I go sanding and refinishing it. He actually asked me not to touch it (anymore) until he could test it. He's a carpenter so he just brought home a little nifty lead test kit and in 2 seconds we were able to see that it is lead free. But it got me thinking, and now everytime I see a nice old whatever (chair, dresser etc) at a thrift store I second guess if I should touch it or bring it into my house with small children… Just wondering if you could touch on this in a future post maybe?

  17. Oh. My. Goodness. Those doors. I can NOT believe you bought those as cheaply as you did. Those are amazing. I'd pay you triple for them! Are you sure you want to keep them???? I'm so jealous!

  18. There you go, banging out ANOTHER bargain. I thought my $6 clearance cloche at TJ Maxx yesterday was the find of the week but man, those doors! Bed looks great. I love the hodge podge pillows. Looking forward to YOUR giveaway!

  19. Can't wait for your giveaway, as I seem to like everything you like. I want to go where you get all of these doors! I know I would be buying them up like you do…you're not crazy at all! Not in my opinion! I mean, if it's beautiful and such a bargain, you'd be nuts to just walk away! I'm an artist, but tend to post a lot of "finds" as well…that's really one of my favorite things to do, and am so glad I found your blog!

  20. so many doors. I am impressed you can think of so many things to do with doors. please keep sharing what you do with them. it intrigues me.

  21. Those doors are amazing! That patina is absolutely wild.

And I too would love it if you would cover the lead paint issue. I didn't think of it when I refinished my table and I should have.

  22. MMS – I am still workin' on my "I-don't-know-what-to-do-with-this-room" great room. The floor is a light oak color, the fireplace is a bit darker oak, the book case my neighbor built for me was supposed to match the fireplace, but is a little darker. What about the rest of the wood colors?? I found a beautiful 29" high end table that is … you guessed it .. OAK! I still need a dining room set and a coffee table, but cannot find anything I like … AND … WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE WOOD COLORS?!?!! I know I'm not supposed to be all matchy-matchy, but is too many … well, too many?

Appreciate your words of wisdom, your humor, and your blog!

    d

P.S. I have 2 white doors in my shed w/glass door handles … AND THEY'RE NOT OAK!! 🙂

  23. I am so excited about your giveaway. I know the items will be fabulous and I will be there…waving my hands and saying, "Pick me please!!" Ha!
Love those doors…they are beautiful and perfect as you say.
And that egg scramble has me drooling!
Love the pillows…they are perfect on the bed!
    Hugs

  24. Adding my name to the list of lovelies who love those doors!! I also love your guest bed, it looks so inviting! OK and I love the scrambled eggs too:) Hope you are having a wonderful weekend ~ Tina xx

  25. Just found your blog a couple of days ago, it's wonderful…Love the doors you found; I would never in a million years find them at the price you got yours for… I really like your style

  26. I've been trying to keep our bed "simple" so my husband doesn't have to deal with what to do with pillows…But you two additions to your guest bed have convinced me that it Does look More Hospitable!

And I really like the mixed linens – very pretty.

  27. love the doors – the pillows are so nice and comfy looking – I have been avoiding TJ Maxx, but may need to stop soon.
