painting my room at Lucketts

I had an amazing day.  It was busy, but I had a successful shopping trip and had dinner and a movie with my hubby.  That’s a great day.  I’ll share some pictures of some of my latest favorite finds in the next few days.

As some of you know, last Thursday Mini and I set out to paint my room on the third floor at The Lucketts Store.

After much patching, one coat of Satin True Value Easy Care in Owl Gray mixed at half strength on the walls and one coat of water borne semigloss Impervo paint in bright white on the trim, here is what it looks like…

The change isn’t too dramatic, but here is the before…

I actually really liked the color, but the walls and trim were so filled with holes that I really just needed to start over.  I wanted to use a soft color, so my furniture and antiques would be the star, so I opted for a subtle version of a paint color I knew would work with almost anything.

The room looks so fresh and bright now and I was very happy with the performance of the True Value Easy Care paint.  I was concerned it might take two coats, but the coverage was great and one coat was enough.  We did have to hit some of the edges with a second coat, but there was a lot of texture to deal with and some of the brush strokes showed.  Oh!  I need to insert a big huge hug and thank you to Amy, who stopped by to help Mini and I paint and eat cake bites.  Three was the perfect number to finish the room in a reasonable time without the room being crowded.  Thanks also to the ladies who tried to make it out.  I know schedules are busy, so I appreciate the effort.

The room was a little sparse, since I only brought a few new pieces, including this wonderful drop-leaf table.  The patina on it is amazing and I was really hoping it would stay in the space through the Christmas open house, but it sold last week.  (I didn’t go to Lucketts yesterday, so I know my space is almost empty!)  Such is life as a vendor at Lucketts.

Speaking of the holiday open house, it is November 4-6.  The entire Lucketts Store will be decked out for the holidays and filled with new goodies.  The design house will also be open, so it’s a great weekend to stop by. On Thursday, November 3, I’ll be bringing a van and trailor full of furniture (including a Swiss cross inspired dresser, Ruthie’s upholstered pieces, and an amazing solid walnut harvest table), all of my handmade ornaments, a live tree to show them on and tons of fabulous accessories.  If you want first pick or just want to come and say hello, I’ll be there most of the morning and early afternoon.  I’ll also be working at the store all day on Friday the 4th and I would love to say hello to some of my readers and loyal Lucketts shoppers.  Come by if you can!

  1. I would love the info on the bird nest painting also! What color did you use on the dark green distressed dresser? It's just what I need for a side table for my living room, well after I find just the right table, but I mine as well have the paint ready! Beautiful room, it is so inviting!

  2. Oh my goodness Marian! Who painted that bird nest painting in your booth? That is beautiful!

I so wish I could visit your room. Couldn't get much further away living in Western Washington!

    Have a great open house!

  3. It looks gorgeous. Oh I how I wish I could come and see it in person. Some day! Esp. love that striped dresser mixed in with the other pieces. Looks just so lovely. I am sure you will get cleaned out fast. Have a great weekend. -K

  4. One of these days I'm going to take an extended weekend and drive out there to visit Luckett's and see your room. My mom and I love the shops in Alexandria, so we will just have to go a little further one of these days. Love the new paint job and can't wait to see it decorated for Christmas!

  5. OK so I know you are just teasing us about that nest painting and just pretending that your post is about the room being painted. Come on….fess up. Um, yeah……I might die unhappy because I don't own that painting.

  6. I'm all snoopy about the swiss cross dresser! 😀 I'm getting home sick for the US, reading all of your posts anyways, so I can take another home sickness for Switzerland! ;P
    Like the new wall color!

  7. I'll be seeing everything a week early. The Husband and I are going to a luncheon just over the bridge in Knoxville, Md., and we are making a stop at Lucketts on the way there … we ALWAYS stop at Lucketts whenever we are anywhere in the vicinity. It sounds as you and the other vendors there will have a rousingly successful event in November.

  8. My husband & I are down from New Hampshire, for a car show with his buddies in Front Royal on Saturday. First time visit. Enjoy your blog. Know we will miss seeing you & mini mustard seed but am excited to see your shop on Sunday. I have my first chalk paints from Patty….

  9. I wish I lived closer so I could be there for this event! The paint color looks great and I can't wait to see pictures of your space all decked out for the holidays!

  10. Just beautiful…I wish I lived closer…Well, if I'm ever in the neighbourhood, I will be sure to stop by. And I agree with all the other posters, that nest painting is so soft and pretty. I'm guessing it might be the subject of your next post!

  11. It's a small change… but the room looks fresh and bright! P.S. loving those brass quails together… very pretty for fall. I found one at a thrift store and now I want to find more after seeing yours!

  12. If I'd gone to Luckett's, that dropleaf table would have gone home with me! It caught my eye immediately.

Thanks for sharing your things with us. I don't know how you do it all.

  13. You give me such inspiration from afar! I'm in Palm Springs and wishing I could just hop in the car to visit you and your team at the Holiday Open House! I wish much success for you!

  14. Hi 🙂 I have enjoyed your blog on a daily basis since finding it. I am so hopeful to travel your way during the Christmas open house because my family will be spending a month at Fort Lee, Virginia. I would love to thank you in person for all of the inspiration!

  15. Your space looks so inviting-wish I could pay a personal visit.

Please share some info on the two paintings in your room, "The Nest" and "The Deer". Are you able to ship such items to California?

One more thing…What color did you use on the dresser under "The Deer"? I love it!

    Thanks!

  16. Oh Marion! It looks absolutely wonderful. You did a great job with it and it is staged beautifully! I hope you sell, sell, sell and can make this a real dream come true. Wish I were there to visit in person! xo Diana

  17. Hey Marian, it's been many years since we last met, but, I wanted to let you know, I love what you are doing! You are awesome. Ironically, I have shopped in your sweet little store and purchased often never realizing it was yours 🙂 Jenna, Ms. Jenna's Photography, LLC.

  18. Oh how I wish I lived closer..I would love to meet you and see your space in person..I love your work..Have a great weekend..

  19. I agree with many of your other readers – good thing I live in AZ (for my bank account). Love the color choice for your paint project. Your going to have fabulous sales this holiday season!

  20. OK… since I was the first to mention "the Bird Nest" Painting… does that mean I get a small version… knowing that I probably can't afford the large size… Please more details for myself as well as the other ladies… this painting is just so beautiful and it just reached out and touched me through the miles…

  21. Hi, Many of us retailers are preparing for our Christmas open houses and would love to see a tutorial for the pinwheel ornaments. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Thanks so much, Kenda

  22. I love the new color! And I love how the branches of the chalkboard tree on the armoire in the back look like they are part of the tablescape . . . almost coming out of the blue pitcher! Love your blog!

  23. This is just the sort of inspiration I need right now. When we built our house 4 years ago I wanted the living and breakfast rooms to have a warm french country feel with reds and yellows. After 4 years of filling it with that I now feel the need to "lighten and brighten" as I read on another blog! I am going to the paint store after the kids wake up from naptime today to get some paint swatches. I'm now a woman on a mission. Thanks for the inspiration!

  24. It looks fabulous, but of course I knew it would! Every time you show your space at Luckett's, I always wish I were closer so I could shop there all the time. Maybe it's a good thing I'm too far away or I might go broke 🙂 I'm dying to know more about the painting/picture/canvas of the nest!! How can I get one????? Please let me know when you can. Thank you so much, Laura (bandbsnest@gmail.com) XOXO

What does mixed at half strength mean? I'm just curious what the difference would be to just pick a lighter color? I have SUCH a hard time picking paint, I'm just trying to gain more wisdom anywhere I can! Love all you do!!

  26. OH, how I wish I could just hop up there for the open house! I can't wait to come back this summer for Lucketts Fair again. Mom and Katie and I have decided it will be an annual trip:) I was thrilled to see your neck of the woods in Southern Living this month. It was great to see Chartreuse and Co in there as well as other places that we didn't have time for. They were right, you guys have the best antique trail! I am hanging onto the article for the dining tips:) I will be praying for a successful Christmas for you. I know it will be amazing.
    Best,
    Kelli

  27. Hi Marion, I am loving that wall color, but it looks like a pale, pretty, creamy peach color, not gray at all. I went to the True Value site and typed in the owl gray in the search box and it didn't come up with anything. I even googled it and didn't come up with anything in that color. any help please?

  28. It looks really, really good! I’ll bet your are anxious to get all your stuff there and get it unloaded. That is a great paint color, by the way. Neutral and a great backdrop~ xo Diana

  29. Hi Marian~
It looks fantastic! Hope I get to see you on the next trip. Congrats on your success and hope you haven’t gotten snowed in up there!
    Take care,
    Tina
