My husband and I were cramming today to finish our bathroom for a photo shoot tomorrow for some freelance HGTV.com projects. My, oh my, has time been tight this summer! Things keep piling on and it’s been stressful, but we’re almost through the busiest part. So, Haven has really been sneaking up on me. I’ve maybe been in denial that it’s right around the corner. And that I’m teaching a workshop and need to prepare for it! Maybe I’m confessing too much? Well, Shaunna and I got our act together and have a great Advanced Painting Workshop planned. Last year, we reviewed different paint types, techniques, tools, our favorite tricks, etc. This year, we’re going to teach a hand’s on workshop, showcasing three advanced paint finishes. I love that we’re all going to get to play with paint.
One thing that we will be repeating is our “Best Worst Paint Clothes Contest.” I know that everyone always frets about what to wear to blog conferences, so Shaunna and I thought we would make it easy for those attending our class. Wear your very best worst paint clothes and the best worst one wins!
Some of the outfits from last year cracked me up. The girl who won wore a tie-died jumpsuit that look like a moth buffet. It was a riot. My pants were so sketchy that I was nervous about hooking my microphone battery pack to it, because I was certain the weight of it would take them down. It was great fun. So, if you’re coming to Haven and plan to attend our class, bring along your best worst paint clothes and sport them for our workshop.
We’ll be giving away a nice prize package in each workshop including a Miss Mustard Seed tee…

…a copy of my book…

…and Shuanna is bringing some goodies from her shop like a Perfectly Imperfect tee, some books, paint, etc. It’ll be worth the strange looks received in the hotel lobby. So, along with your statement necklaces and cute shoes, throw in some comfy clothes to show us how messy you are when you paint.
I can’t wait to see everyone there!

I wish I could make it there, thought the international plane fare pretty much writes me out! I would sooooo sport my Converse splattered track pants and almost see-through paint stained tee.
Your bathroom is looking amazing. Can’t wait to take your class – paint splattered clothes are in my “to pack” pile! x
I’m with Kristine (first comment). I would wear my ‘paint’ jeans. It fitted me before I had children ;-).
I live well to the south of you in NW Alabama. How far south do you travel with workshops, book signings? Your blog and decorating style is my favorite!
Hi, i’ll be there, and can’t wait!! I am just thinking about clothing today and have not packed yet!
I did notice last night that the only pair of comfy shoes I own are flip flop style crocs – covered in paint – and i’m wearing them on my 8 hour plane trip to get to Haven!
Can’t wait to meet you and Shaunna and take this class.
Will you by any chance have any tshirts for sale? I’d love to buy one if I don’t wear the best of the paint clothing.
See you tomorrow!
EEK!
Wendy
Have a great time at Haven! Your class sounds like so much fun – I’m sure it will be great!
Ha! Sounds like so much fun! I wish I could attend Haven – it sounds like a wonderful time! I’d be in a pickle with my painting clothes though – they are all so big now that I’ve lost weight – I actually cut up my painting shirts into rags this morning! My painting pants are in the garbage – they were falling off! I’m sure I’ll replace them soon – I’m a messy!
Is there still room in this workshop?? Somehow I missed all the details!
Marian,
I hope this doesn’t insult your talents :0) but do you freehand your art work on the pieces you paint or do you have stencils? My heart tells me it’s just your incredible talent but my talent…not so good. Love, Love your work. Can’t wait to do my first piece.
It was sooo fun last year…..and I have been thoroughly enjoying my prize for the rattiest paint clothes! 😉 {And I STILL paint in my mothy, tie dyed jumper…..making sure to tie something around my waist to hide the large hole in the derriere!}
See you tomorrow!
Blessings~

Wow! so glad I checked in BEFORE if jumped in the car and headed for Haven tomorrow! Sounds like fun…fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) 90% of my wardrobe has paint on it! What shall I choose/??? Can’t wait! See you in Atlanta!
Oh…I wish I could be there because I would win that contest. Most of my paint clothes (which outnumber my clean clothes!!) have more paint and plaster showing than fabric! I once went into a client’s home to do a simple touch up and wound up getting some paint on my new Coldwater Creek gray jeans (which I loved!) – so they became my paint pants. They are now so heavy with every color paint and plaster imaginable. All of my company t shirts look similar!
I just finished a job in a multi million dollar loft in TriBeCa in NYC and I could not show up in my crappy wear, so I had to be really careful (hard for me – no rubbing paint off my hands onto my pants) and I only got a little smudge on my shirt, which came off right after I noticed it. This was a “first” for me!
Wish I could be there – maybe next year…
Linda
Oh my! I didn’t know there were so many kindred spirits out there! What a hoot! I too have more paint clothes than ‘clean’ clothes. I have repeatedly gone out on an errand only to discover I have my painting shoes on.
It would be fun if you could get some pictures. Enjoy Haven!
So excited for your class! See you all VERY soon! ~Sonya
There is spirit…with paint in my hair!
Have a wonderful time,
Kelly
So excited!!!!!! Now to find a painting outfit that’s appropriate to wear in public. See you Friday!!!!
Mariam, I have to tell you that this post was one of the most insightful and enlightening posts that I have ever read. I can really relate to this and to you when it comes to weight and clothes shopping. I was always a “shopping queen” according to my friends and always loved to purchase clothing – a lots of it! But, then I gained a lot of weight and I was so unhappy with myself – inside and out. This transformation of going from being confident to wanting to hide from the world was devastating to my self esteem. I recently lost 26 lbs and went from size 14 to size 10 or 8 (depending on clothing of course) and have once again found that confident inner soul that I once was. I don’t shop as much because it is too costly and frankly I don’t need that many clothes in my closet – couldn’t wear everything that I bought. So I have been sorting and donating what I don’t love and giving it to someone else in hopes that this “new to you” clothing will boost their self esteem too! Its amazing how weight can affect our total well being, isn’t it. Not only does it cause health problems but it can cause severe mental health problems, too. Congratulations on your weight loss and finding that confident you again. Again, this post was so good! Thanks for sharing!
Hi! How do I buy a t-shirt if I live no where near you? Don’t see them on your website. Thanks.
You don’t happen to hav the first workshop ( that us new bees are screaming for ; )
Put on video or in a transcript? I know I’d give you my left leg for it!!
I’m very excited to meet you and take your class- safe travels and I’ll see you soon! 🙂
This sounds so fun! You two are some very talented ladies! It would be so fun to get to study under you!
I already left! I was beginning to wonder if you were coming! Bringing my book for you to sign- got my blog up today!!! Thanks for the inspiration!
So wish I was going to Haven! I know I’m going to be missing out!
Not that you need anymore projects…. But for all of us who will never be able to make it to your workshop… Have you ever considered a DVD series we could purchase?? It doesn’t even need to be fancy. Just a camcorder in the back of the room!! Oh please oh please!! 🙂
Oh, how I wished you could do this in Asheville! I’ve already learned so much from your sharing! Best wishes for a wonderful conference at Haven, and can’t wait to see you in NC at “Becoming!:
Sounds like fun! Painting clothes are always kind of scary. The last time I could not answer the door. It would have been too embarrassing!
hahahaha, wish I was going so I could sport my purple fleece pants that flood to right above my ankles 🙂 And also would fall down immediately from a microphone pack…..
Well, I didn’t get painting clothes packed, but I will be there with bells on and with my MMS book! 😀 xo
WOW, wish you could do painting workshop on line, so many of us cant make it.
Maybe a tutorial soon with this information from workshop would be nice. Since I often paint in my undies and tank, don’t think I want seen by all. But I am sure there are others like me Its hot here in southern California.. thanks
Have fun! I love that you are having a Best Worst Paint Clothes contest 🙂 I’ve been doing fancy wall finishes and furniture painting for 7 years now, so I have some pants that can almost stand up by themselves, thanks to paint and metallic plasters! I’ve had people ask me, “Why don’t you try getting paint on the WALL next time?!” I just laugh and tell them I come “pre-primed” 🙂
All these comments crack me up! I have paint on all my clothes but mostly my pajamas. Seem to be inspired early in the am! I even have paint on my white bra! Lol, not really sure how that happened. I don’t feel quite so crazy after reading these comments. Thanks to all the Sistas!
