cutting corners

About three years ago, I walked into my local paint store and noticed a display for a bright green painter’s tape – Frog Tape. I trust my guys at the paint store, so I asked, “Does this stuff really work?” I have never been a fan of painter’s tape. I always, ALWAYS had problems with bleeding and finally decided to just trust my own steady hand.  I was about to work on a custom piece for a client – a Steeler’s desk that was to be painted black with school bus yellow stripes.  I needed sharp, crisp lines.  The guys told me it worked, so I tried Frog Tape and blogged about it HERE.  That was when my blog was less than a month old and it was itty bitty.  I probably had less than 20 followers and no idea even how to get sponsors.  A few weeks later, Frog Tape contacted me about my post and sent me some rolls to keep me supplied and some to give away.  They became my very first official blog sponsor and we’ve stuck together ever since.  Now, I’ve been asked to be a part of their Frog Tape Blog Squad and it was a no-brainer to say yes.

I often show projects when I use Frog Tape, so you’ll just keep seeing those.

Last week, I was working on this secretary…

I decided to leave the fretwork unpainted, which meant that I needed a nice, crisp line between the door frame and the fretwork.  Can you guess what I used?  Yeah, you guessed.  Frog Tape.  Here’s a new trick I learned, though.  I have always found it difficult to tape inside corners.  For this piece, I pushed a 1 1/4″ chisel into the corner on top of the tape and then pulled the tape, so it was cut in a clean line by the chisel.

This trick gave me a nice, straight corner.

I painted around the frame of the doors and removed the tape while the paint was still wet.

…and, of course, I got crisp lines.  Just as I would expect.

I’m using this piece to reveal my MMS Milk Paint color “Grain Sack.”  I can’t wait to haul it up from the basement for a proper photo shoot!
