great finds, the one thing I won’t paint and a giveaway

I set out Sunday afternoon to hit an antique mall I hadn’t been to in a while.  I really need to start building up a stash for the Lucketts Antique Market in May.  Well, the antique mall I wanted to mill around in was closed.  Like, forever.  So, hmmm…I have a couple hours to myself.  Where can I go?  I pulled out my handy iPhone and looked up some antique stores in the area.  The first one I went to was a bust.  Mostly.  I did find this awesome camera…

It was super cheap, but it was about the only thing in the place that was.  So, I headed to the next place on my phone.  It didn’t look promising.  It’s a tiny, little…almost a shed.  At first glance, I thought it was going to be stuff with reproduction primitives, based on the name and the outside.  I started walking around and this caught my eye…

I know it will sound crazy, but I’ve been looking for a wire dish rack for about ten years.  I always look at them, but they are almost always priced around $40, which is just too high in my opinion.  This one was a good deal, so I snapped it up and kept meandering around.  This shop was awesome.   The proprietress has a wonderful eye and fair pricing.  Then, I spotted these…

This shop had a lot of great ironstone at good prices.  Score!

And it got even better.  I found some apothecary bottles…

…a landscape black & white group portrait, a farm table and this beautiful bird’s eye maple dresser.

Lest you think I paint everything, one thing I won’t paint is gorgeous bird’s eye maple.  Isn’t this piece gorgeous?  I wish I could justify keeping it.  (Someone mentioned really wanting this in an anonymous comment and it will be for sale at Lucketts.)

I’m keeping this place a secret for now, so the locals don’t raid it.  Can you blame me?
Now for the giveaway!  I bought one of these a few weeks ago from Christine at Wild Rose.  I loved it so much I went to the source and bought a few more for some girls on the blog who wanted them and a couple for my space at Lucketts.  I also bought one to giveaway!

If you would like to win an antique metal caddy (I think it’s English) with clay pots, just leave a comment.

The giveaway closes Friday, April 15 at midnight EST.
By the way, I haven’t forgotten about all of your waxing questions.  I have been up to my eyeballs in summer HGTV tutorials and I need to get those finished before I can sit down and write a lengthy technical post.  Want a preview of one of my projects?

  14. Love the dresser!!! Since I can't have that, I would be thrilled to win the metal caddy. I never seem to come across neat items like that in my searches. By the way, I found you through Funky Junk Interiors…you two have the best blogs!

  15. I had a camera like that and a dresser like that but sadly they perished in the house fire that my mother had a couple years ago. I've been searching for a camera like that for a while now, good find.

We were military and just prior to my husband retiring to where I could go back and retrieve my "personal belongings" they all went up in flames, not one of them survived.

I was blessed by my husbands grandmother before she passed at almost 102 to be given the ironstone soup tureen. I love it, bonus was that it came with a ladle.

    Super great finds.

  39. Can I just say, I am new as blogger but I have been reading your blog for a year and have referred many others to it. I have had a booth in a small shop in a small town in NC for about a year. I do believe I was led to your blog because your passion, creativity, and energy radiates encouragement…it has helped me be more willing to take a risk at things. Thanks! and by the way, I would love to win the caddy.

  40. Yes, count me in for the giveaway! Love that caddy with those little pots, they would be ideal for sprouting kitchen herbs!

You scored big at that antique shop, and I don't blame you one bit for keeping it a secret! Sometimes ya just gotta! I have a wire dish rack just like yours, I use it to display some of my old shabby chic plates that I have collected over the years. I too had to look and look for some time to find one t a resonable price.

A friend of mine wants me to paint some of her furniture for her (shabby chic style) and I told her already "If it's good wood, a nice piece in good condition, or heirloom quality, I will not take a paint brush to it! Otherwise, we are good to go!" so I understand exactly why you would not touch the perfect birdseye maple piece. It is gorgeous!

    Best,

    Kimberly

  71. I love the give away, but what I really am interested in is that little square lidded piece of ironstone! Since I can't get to your "magical place" you call Luckett's, would you consider a mail order? It's just such a cute piece!

  73. Um, yes. I'd like to win that! I'd actually LOVE to win that! 😉
Don't keep the shop a secret too long for the owner's sake. As a small, out of the way shop owner, I have mixed emotions when someone tells me they want to keep me their secret. I love that they like the shop, but really need more business.

  74. I love your blog and look forward to each each and every day. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.. And the chance to win… Pam

  79. I would love to win! I stumbled across your blog a couple of weeks ago and have been addicted to your tutorials and projects. I repainted my dining room hutch and chairs a couple of years ago and used wax to finish them. There is nothing better than a good coating of paste wax!!

By the way, anxiously waiting for my chalk paint. I was so inspired by your designs, I'm re-doing my sons entire room {did I mention I've got three kids and one on the way, in 3 weeks?!?!}.

  87. Hey there, Marian!
Just wanted to thank you so much for your creative blog and what it has done to revive my passion for decorating and my LOVE of antiques. I have always been a collector, but homeschooling 4 kiddos and life had kind of put those things on the back burner. I am inspired by your frugal approach to AMAZING interior design and it has reignited a spark in me. I LOVE the fact that things don't have to be expensive to be absolutely gorgeous. I am so blessed to have found your blog.

  122. Oh, I'm sure you've got a million comments already like this, but I just have the absolute perfect spot for the clay pot caddy! I'm so jealous that you found them… and I think if I don't win I may just have to convince my family to drive from Roanoke up to Luckettes to pick one up for me! 🙂

  123. I really love that caddy! Herbs come to mind immediately – but lots of other things too. Hope I win!!!
    bethg7g at gmail dot com

  124. That caddy is too adorable for me not to try to win it! Leigh (spencer-5 @ embarqmail. com)

  125. Wow! I am, like, almost the 400th person to post a comment!! People must really love that clay pot holder!! Well, I do too! So I am leaving a comment. Hope I win it…. It merges my love of rustic/primitive stuff with my gardening love. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks Marion!

  126. Ahhhh what could look more wonderful in my east facing breakfast room window!! I just KNOW it is calling my name :^)
Thank you for a chance to enter to win!

  127. Oh, Sweet Mustard! Your blog is a daily treat! And someday I will make a slipcover…and meanwhile – well, my heart sings at the metal caddy with those charming clay pots. Sings. Thanks so much for the chance… 🙂

  128. My bedroom set is birds eye maple. Full size four poster bed, large dresser with large beveled oval mirror, and a fantastic armoire. It was my parents. They got it at an estate sale and were bidding against each other and didn't know it…..and they won. 🙂 Love all that you share with us. Thanks!!

  129. Oh my goodness – what great finds!

Please count me in for the giveaway of the metal basket and clay pots…. LURVE them!

    Smiles,
    Jennifer

  130. Love your blog and your tutorials are fabulous…gearing up to do me some slipcovers! I would love to win the antique caddy! It would be so cute with flowers or herbs planted in it!
    Thanks!

  131. I am so jealous of the wealth of antique malls there are in the States. Here in Montreal there are mostly crazy expensive european antiques and a few junk stores that are pretty hit and miss.
I can see that caddy on my balcony with herbs growing in each little clay pot. It would be lovely.

  132. OOOOOHHHHH, totally jealous of your camera find. I love to collect antique cameras too but only have a few. Love the give away. Enter me into the contest. I'll have to go check out your shop and see what other cool finds you have!

  133. There's always so many who want the same thing…wouldn't it be wonderful to have enough for all??! I would LOVE the cute basket and flower pots…

  134. I'd love to win one!! O the uses…let me count the ways…..

Love following you…so many great things & ideas!!

    Take care….until later….V
    Vicki @ My Favorite Things

  135. You seem to have such luck finding good stuff. We need to tag along with you when you go shopping! Enjoy your day! (And if you want to give me that caddy as birthday gift, I'm all for it!)

  136. These caddys are wonderful! So many uses and a lot of charm. I'd love to have one. Thanks for thinking of us readers!

  137. Your giveaways are always my favorite!
The clay pots in the metal container would be fabulous this Spring/Summer on our deck with lovely flowers…
    Many thanks, Cindi
    jchoppes[at]hotmail[dot]com

  138. I would love to win the metal caddy! It's beautiful. I love treasure hunting at antique malls and thrift stores. It's like heaven on earth to me!

  139. These pots and holder, like so many of your finds I find myself thinking how amazing it would look somewhere in my house, thank you for the wonderful giveaway and the daily dose of inspiration!!

  140. Wow, you did score big! I went by an antique place this past Sat and good grief, things were so expensive. They used to have great prices so it was disappointing.

Would love to be included in the giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity to win!!

    xo

  141. Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. I read it everyday. I love your giveaway too. 🙂

    Hilah Sanders

  142. I have only been following your blog for a couple of weeks and I am completely addicted! My husband always smiles when I tell him he's "just got to see what Miss Mustard Seed has done today!" After seeing your beautiful results with chalk paint, we're going to give our kitchen cabinets a try…they are in desperate need of something and new ones are out of the question. If I don't win the drawing, is there a way for me to purchase one from you (if you have any left)? Thanks for sharing that your hubby is a youth pastor…mine is a chaplain in the Navy. Blessings!

  143. I can't wait to see all your goodies at the Lucketts Festival in May! And I will be hand delivering you some antlers 😉 Sorry I'm so slack!!

    Trinity

  144. Love, love, love all your finds!! And I agree about not painting the birds eye maple. I have an old gentleman's dresser my Mom lovingly refinshed when I was a child.
I go to Luckett's several times a year. Hope to meet you on one of my trips!!

  145. I probably don't stand a chance….but would love to win!!! Thanks for the sweet give-a-way. I LOVE your blog…have learned so much about painting furniture here!

  146. I really enjoy your site. The tin caddy has a variety of inside and outside uses especially for spring and summer . Have a number of thoughts what I would do. I love your work with the chalk paint and waxes. I can hardly wait to give it a try.

  147. Oooohhh! Ooohhh! Pick Me! Pick Me. *Waving Arm frantically over her in Ohio!* Love the bird's eye maple. Simply beautiful.

  148. I would love to win!! It would look fab on my front porch, right next to my potting bench…
    sassykatg (at) yahoo (dot) com

  149. I would love to win that caddy! It would be perfect for my new patio which has NOTHING, nada, it's a blank canvas. Crossing my fingers!

  150. I would love to win these – I have the perfect place for them. I am a stained glass artist and this would look perfect in my studio, holding my tools, but looking stylish as well!

  151. I love this!!! When I first saw it on your blog I could just picture it in my herb garden! So cute! I'm from Western PA and my husband and son are running in the Spirit of Gettysburg 5K in June…I'll be in your neck of the woods 🙂

  152. Oh my what I wouldn't give for this caddy. I've been looking and looking at them but as our house needs so much work done to it that comes first before "decorating"

  153. What a fun day you had and you scored some great items, but I just LOVE the wire caddy with the little pots. I would love to be the lucky winner.

  154. Sounds as though your treasure hunt turned into a fruitful find of many bountiful items! The birdseye maple dresser and the ironstone pieces were just beautiful! Yes, I would certainly love to win the little pots in the antique metal carrier. My grandfather was from the Cottswolds in England and as I was a child growing up, he has several similar type items in his English garden on benches and such. I have been trying for years to replicate his garden to no avail yet he made it look so easy. Thank you for always having such wonderful items, lovey ideas, and the warmest heart for sharing. Deborah

  155. Thank you for not painting the bird's eye maple chest. That wood is just too gorgeous to cover with paint. Love that wire basket. I have been looking for one!

  156. I loved this when you first showed it! I'm new to your blog and am thoroughly enjoying it! Thanks for all the inspiration. 🙂

  157. LOVE LOVE LOVE your site, your talent and the quality of your work!! Truly an inspiration! Thank you for all you share!

  158. ee-gads! my knees are weak from the images in this dreamy post! i would love to be entered into your giveaway and i'm having one, too, so pop on over.

    xo

  159. I know how you feel about not wanting to share your newest shopping outlet. There is a "antique" (really a junk store ) near me that is like that. The building looks horrible and it's off the side of a road, yet they do have great things and dirt cheap prices. I cringe when friends as me where I buy my old stuff.

I'd love a chance to win your caddy too!

  160. I would love to win that charming caddy! Thank you for the way you so generously share your "trade secrets." Your blog is wonderful.

  161. I am in complete awe of your shopping mojo. I hardly ever find great things at fair prices. You have found some beautiful things!

  162. So I am excited for your give away. Thank you for the chance to win. I am about to slip cover a chair…the drop cloth is in the wash now. Thank you for your inspiration, I adore your style.

  163. HI!
I know I'm one of tons…but I, too, would love to win your giveaway! What a great find! I've seen those before, but never with the containers that go with the caddy! I would love it!
    Thanks for the chance!!

  164. The wire rusts and the pottery fades but the word of our LORD stands forever.
I would be thrilled to be the new owner of the caddy… thanks for your generosity!!
    Blessings!!!

  165. Oh my… I love your stuff. We just don't have the things that you score in California. 🙁 I love the little basket. I see it filled with herbs, on a little painted step stool, next to my sliding glass door.

  166. Please enter me in the contest for the wire pot holder. I love it! I have enjoyed all your posts. You are blessed with great talent.

  167. So glad you found something for you! Doesn't it just make your day when you find those little out of the way shops….keep up the great work….love your blog! Blessings, Deb

  168. Beautiful ironstone! I'm glad the whole trip wasn't a bust – – you got some goodies. 🙂

I would love to win the caddy. Thanks for the chance!

  169. Hi Marion, I would love to win this wire carrier, I eyed one at Wild Rose too, but with all the money I spent there, couldn't justify one more thing. 🙂

    Thanks for the opportunity.

Loving reading and watching all your videos and post here. Your one busy woman. Need to get to Luckets to check out your space. Hopefully soon.

    Hugs,
    Cindy

  170. I am fairly new to your blog, but by far, YOU ARE MY FAVORITE. I look forward to it everyday. I painted furniture and sold it for years. Your work is gorgeous. I love your ideas and tips.
    Many thanks

  171. I've been commenting on blogs for months now and haven't won a thing!…but I really, really like this wire thing. I love wire things!…and I love your blog. I'm a painter of furniture too and am learning a lot from you.

  172. I've been wondering how to get my hands on one of these since you first featured it!

  173. I would love to win this!!!! So many of my outdoor things were broken with our long harsh winter 🙁

  174. oh I would love to win! I wish we had awesome antique stores where I lived! Okay, actually we do have awesome antique stores, they are just insanely high priced antique stores. :p

  175. I've been admiring those little clay pots since you first showed them! I want them! I want them! I want them! Please help me bring charm to my desert home :0)

  176. Hi
I would love to win the caddy and pots!! I just bought my first tin of Briwax and will be trying it tonite on a stool I painted (I even sanded and primed it) – hope it turns out like I have it pictured in my head!
    jelliott60@gmail.com

  177. Pick me, pick me…

Now, for those of us who cannot go to Lucketts because we live many many days drive away, you really are a tease! Here I sit, in Oklahoma, waiting for a spring storm, drooling over your latest booty, and I cannot even imagine how cool it would be to be able to go to Lucketts. Much less buy something from you.

Seriously…pick me. Cause it is as close as I am gonna get to shopping at Lucketts…

    Sniffle.

  178. Oh, oh, oh, I'd love to win one of those caddys! I've been slowly trying to make my 3-year-old suburban duplex look like a 100-year-old farmhouse, with very little money. That caddy would be just perfect!

That dresser is gorgeous. I don't blame you for not painting it!

  179. That caddy looks like the perfect thing for growing kitchen herbs! You seem to have lots of good fortune with antique shops!

  180. I'm a new comer to your blog and am really enjoying it! I discovered you through a friend's blog….jewelry box. Love the wire caddy and pots. Jennifer
    sdjg@pacbell.net

  181. Oh heck, I never win anything, but throw my name in the hat!! those are some cool finds, and I am so HAPPY that you aren't painting that gorgeous wood!!

  182. Oh, Miss Mustard Seed! Tomorrow is my birthday….and I'm so far from Luckett's I'll never get there….and I LOVE the antique metal caddy…. If I don't get it as a birthday present from you :), could you please email me with the vendor? I'm new to your blog and I LOVE YOUR WORK—AWESOME!
    barb@artforthejourney.com

  183. Wow, you really scored some fabulous treasures!!! I am dying over those ironstone tureens, ironstone is my weakness!! I would love to be entered in your giveaway, thanks for a chance.
And I don't blame you at all for keeping the shop a secret! 🙂
    Have a lovely night.
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  184. SO CUTE! I would love to win one of these darling caddies! I also have to send you some photos of a table I bought on Craigslist like your dining room table. As soon as it is a little warmer out, so I can work in my garage, I am going to redo it like your's! I'll post before and afters! 🙂

  185. I LOVE your new finds, especially the apothecary jars! My little girls and I would have a ball filling these small pots with garden finds. Thanks for the opportunity, would love to win ; )!

  186. I seriously need to move! You find the most amazing treasures. I would love to be entered in your drawing. =)

Thanks for always being such a great inspiration.

  187. I would love to win…thank you.
You found some real treasures and that birds eye maple piece…so beautiful.

  188. Marian,
I love the ironstone you found.

You truly have an eye and its so much fun to "go shopping" with you!
    Karen

  189. One of the hundreds commenting, but sooo worth it! I love your finds – funny, but I've just recently found a great collection of apothecaries & an old wire dish drainer about a month ago! Great minds…

  190. I am a new follower! Love to read your new finds, projects and great ideas every day!! Love the clay pots in the wire basket.

  191. I love your blog…I am a follower, although I do not have a blog. Love all that you do!
I think I have that same dish drainer! Mine was like $1, so cool…can't wait to see what you do with yours…I put my thrift store plates in it!
Would love to win your give-away!
    Thanks!

  192. I am a new follower! Love to read your ideas, projects and treasure finds every day! Keep going and please don't stop! Love the clay pots in the wire basket!

  193. Hi Marian! Sometimes those out-of-the-way little shops hold the best treasures! Yours are just wonderful! That ironstone is amazing! Thanks for offering such a sweet giveaway, too! I adore those vintage clay pots in that carrier! They would look great on my front porch next to my swing. 🙂

    xoxo laurie

  194. i love it! And I love your blog… i only found you about a month ago. Yesterday i was in the grocery store looking through the magazines… guess what i saw… your british dresser and your article! I felt like I found something in that magazine done by a friend… i was so happy!
    Kelly Starr 🙂

  195. Here's my entry for the giveaway.

Love your blog – I've got slipcovers and painting on my to-do list. Thanks for your inspiration.

  196. Sounds like a fun afternoon! I need an afternoon to myself to peruse some antique stores. Shopping with an 18 month old is not very productive!
    Love those little clay pots!

  197. Great post, the photography is over the top. Your finds were definitely a score! You just don't find ironstone for good prices anymore…so if you do snarf it up fast!

Thank you for offering such a wonderful giveaway – I can imagine using it for candles, blossoms, a desk caddy, herbs – well it's fun, fabulous and functional!

  198. My grandmother had one of these. She used it when she would pick blackberries or strawberries. It helped her know how many pints of berries she had as she was picking.

  199. I am so jealous of your fun shopping adventure! Would love to be the future owner of the metal caddy with pots! Thank you for your offers, and sharing your creativity. {p.s. what are you going to do with the metal drying rack?}

  200. It would be like winning the lottery! I love your blog so much. Thanks for all the great information and inspiration!

  201. I love this post, but mostly (I cannot tell a lie) I WANT THOSE SEED POTS! I've wanted them since I first saw it, and have been waiting on the edge of my seat for this blog.

    Happy Thursday, pretty girl 🙂

  202. I actually have a camera like the one at the top. My late father-in-law used it when he was in WWII. I display his camera with another one that belonged to him in the 50's and the Canon slr camera my parents gave me for high school graduation. It is a very graphic display and also has so much meaning to our family!

  203. I would love to win the wire basket and pots. I would plant herbs in them. I love your blog and wished I lived close enought to buy that birds eye dresser. I live in Georgia. (sigh) Oh well.
    Jacque Avant

  204. What a great giveaway, I have the perfect place for this pretty little find. I've wanted one for years.

BTW This is a fabulous blog. I just began reading blogs and yours caught my eye right away. Keep up the wonderful ideas.

  205. Oh how delightful those little pots are! Count me in for the giveaway!

Ps…so glad you aren't painting the dresser. It is truly gorgeous as is.

  206. Oh, please, oh please, oh please let me win these!!! I have loved these since I first met them and wondered how on earth I never find things like this in my travels!
If you pick me, I promise I'll paint my MIL's antique dresser just for you and I'll even name it Marion!!!!
    Terry

  207. Wow, your lucky day girl!! That little dresser is just to die for and I'm so happy for you that you found your wire dish rack!! Now about that beautiful ironstone….are you going to sell it? I wish I could get a piece or two….but I suppose it would be too risky to ship……oh well, I will just have to keep looking. I never see any around here though, must be a northern item…..have your parents arrived yet? Be sure and let us know when you get your armoire! Is that how you spell it?? Yes, I would absolutely love to win the beautiful pot carrier. Thank you for being so generous!! Take care, VBg

  208. Gosh! My friend introduced me to your blog. I am loving it! I wish I was in the US so I could go antiqing but seeing what you find helps feed my need for now! 😀 Love how you make things "your own" 😀

  209. Love those little pots in a wire tray – love to win one. Appreciate all your tips and hints – thank you for sharing some inspiration.

  210. What Wonderful finds you got. I would love to win the Lovely pot holder. Could you Please contact me about the Bird's Eye Maple Chest? I am very Interested! Thank-You for for sharing with all of us your Heavenly site. realsungirl@hotmail.com

  211. I would love to win the giveaway its so cute, the only time I`ve seen something like this was in my Grandad`s greenhouse.
BTW I adore that dresser is so beautiful and love the shape.

  212. Love your blog!I entered your giveaway, but was wondering if you have some of those crates with the pots in your store? I would love to purchase one, but I don't live near your store. I live in Ohio. Would you ever ship one? And if so what would be the cost? Thank you.

  213. The maple floor of my last house had a lot of birdseye maple pieces in it…gorgeous! Yeah for you for finding the wire dish rack…I had been looking for a great piece of coral. You know those big ones you see in magazines. I found some at an estate sale this weekend. Score! Love the wire caddy, too. It would look great on my screen porch. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  214. I left a comment a couple of days ago but I do not see it, so want to try again.
Love the caddy and your blog is wonderful!

    Dorothy

  215. Lovin' the wood on that dresser! I'm a total sucker for soup tureens…I've been drooling over that pot caddy since you first posted it! here's to hoping im the lucky winner 😉

  216. I love these pots, I would love to win them! Thanks for all the great ideas, I have been following your blog for a few months now and have been so inspired!

  217. I am so glad this is the giveaway. It caught my eye when it was first posted. Love it.

  218. I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now. I love your before-afters. You inspire me! I struggle with MS and have both bad and good days, but my creative brain is always, always moving forward. I am going to buy a can of the paint you recommend for my next, to be found, treasure. I'd love to win the caddy 🙂 May you have a blessed day!

  219. I am a collector…of…everything vintage. My sister has recently moved into a new home with little storage. She has decided she deserves one of my chest of drawers (since I have so much storage ha-ha) I hesitantly agreed BUT I told her she isn't allowed to paint the piece. It is birds eye maple too. She called me last night and said, "well you were right Miss Mustard Seed won't paint birds eye maple either." 🙂 🙂

  220. I loved that caddy when you got the first one……the pots remind me of Guy Wolf's pots from CT…….. He always has the highly visible circles showing, but these look too old to be done by him. It's fabulous, and can see it for so many uses plants this summer, (peach colored Geraniums, to be exact), and possibly some real green plants in some, and Qtips, Make up brushes, etc. in the bathroom in the winter 🙂
    Kate

  221. Tax deadline–check! Miss Mustard Seed clay pot collection giveaway deadline–check check!!! 🙂 Please count me in!! Fingers crossed!

    xo

  222. Wow, over 600 comment, my chances are slim but I still wanted to say what great finds you got! I love the camera. I always keep my eye out for them for my son who's a photographer. The ironstone is amazing and so is that dresser! Glad you are not painting it. 🙂

  223. I know envy is a sin but I am jeaaaaaalous over that camera! Excellent finds! I suddenly have the urge to go antiquing….

  224. I read your blog faithfully, but have never posted a comment until now. I just had to say how much I love the birdseye dresser. I have a dresser with mirror and a chest of drawers made of birdseye that belonged to my mother. I sold my bedroom furniture so I could have the pieces in my house after my mother died. It makes me feel closer to her.

  225. Hey Girl love your blog. You have great taste.
Love Love Love the wire basket with the clay pots. Would look soooooooooooo good in my home.

    Thanks Lynda
