I took a big step today.

I’ve been talking about making a “commercial” for the MMS Milk Paint line for a long time.  Over a year at least.  When I talked about it in my brainstorming sessions, it seemed easy.  When it actually came time to make one, it seemed hard.  And I kept pushing it down the priority list, waiting for the “perfect time.”

I’ve always let my business grow organically and I’ve liked it that way.  I don’t push too hard for something.  I let things happen naturally.  The problem with that is, I never felt the need to set out a plan or specific goals.  It’s time to be more strategic.

A part of that was moving my idea of making a MMS Milk Paint promotional video to the top of the list.  Finally, today, Kriste and I filmed it.

My concept for the video was to show a makeover from start to finish, using our products from the line.

The concept really came to life when I was picking out my clothes for the video this morning.  I was planning to wear a neutral shirt, jeans and an apron.  I then spotted the yellow and white dress in my closet…

Hmmm…what if I use the dress as inspiration for the piece and make that the “story” of the video…

…the idea that I can’t walk past a piece of furniture without giving it a makeover.

And here’s how that idea translated to video…

I couldn’t wait to get it edited and pick out the music, which was inspired by the Frank Sinatra Pandora channel we were listening to when we worked on the shoot.

And I love how the dresser turned out!  Mustard Seed Yellow pieces always look so happy.

This dresser had a painted crackled finish on it and that showed through the paint, which looked amazing!  I wish I could make this happen at will, but it did this all on it’s own.

I’ll share more on this dresser soon.

Until then, here’s a little silliness from filming today…

Have a great weekend!

  1. It’s great! And, Marian, that outfit plays up your assets beautifully! What a charming mini-movie. Would HGTV run such a long ad? This should be on a major network or two! Looking forward to seeing more of these little gems, when I watch T.V.

  2. Really cute and sassy little vignette on being ‘Miss Mustard Seed’. Your laugh is so infectious!
The dresser is GORGEOUS!! I wished I could incorporate such a nice painted piece into my more house- I keep looking though, for a perfect place 🙂

  3. Love all of this!! You, the dresser, the yellow and white dress and the mustard seed yellow are all perfection. ?

  4. I started playing it, and my husband was in the kitchen, he walked in to see what the wonderful music was coming from! Good job!

  5. You are too cute. This is perfect – I think it really makes an impact that you have tied the dresser to an inspiration piece, and shown a fun sort of step-by-step (love how that little stool moves). And your personality just shines out of this, which is the best part!

  6. You are so cute. I have seen your pictures of painted furniture for a couple of years but only yesterday did I visit your blog. I am so thankful I did. You are an inspiration to all of us just starting out in our “she sheds” weather they be in our husbands work shop, the kitchen, or a drop cloth on the living room floor. I was lost in your home yesterday morning while drinking coffee as the house was still asleep. I love youyour story and faith. Last summer I bought a Masterbuilt smoker to enhance my outside cooking diva, along with it their cookbook. Inside the pages between pictures of mouthwatering pork butts and smakoed Mac and cheese ( yes there is such a thing) Masterbuilt shared their story of naming the business that for then also started in their garage. He was terrified of failure so while building he prayed, gave every worry to God and named his company after his savior, his “master” built. You are wonderful and I am a blog reader for sure now. You keep it real and beautiful all at the same time.

  7. Fabulous commercial!! Cute, but not too cute. And so gets the message across— you can do this, too! Well done–fantastic job!

  8. Great video….I mean it really makes me think I can do it no problem!

One question….do you just paint the outside and if so do you put that finishing coat on the inside to help preserve the wood?

  9. I can’t get this catchy video out of my head after watching it this morning…I want to paint something!

  10. this is so much fun! I loved the concept, the music and you looked fabulous! The dresser turned out beautifully as well!

  11. Marian,
The video is fantastic! And the dress and dresser are both gorgeous! Is the dresser coming to Chapel Market?
    Great job!

  12. Seriously Marian you just picked this dress out and the rest came organically? Next time you should be belting out a song. That degree wasn’t worthless at all. Very catchy and attention keeping. Enjoyed the bloopers too.

    1. Yep, I really did pick out the dress the morning we shot the video and it just sort of developed from there.

  13. i love it. Very cute and yet I really enjoyed seeing the progression of the piece and what your products can do to transform it. I loved the crackle too.

  14. That is adorable! Perfect for your brand.

One note of caution, did you check licensing for the music? Just have my professional hat on for a moment ?

    1. Yep! I use the free music that’s available to publishers on YouTube. That’s where I get all of my music that’s not original.

  15. I just want to say that I love how you let us in on the process. You make it so real. We see your vulnerabilities AND the fun you have.
Your blog makes us all better, no matter what our talents or strengths. Thank you!

  16. I would say you “incubated” the commercial idea exactly the right amount of time because . . . it is just PERFECT! Very innovative, so informative, AND used your theatre degree too! Total home run!

  17. Oh my goodness!!! I feel like I need to touch your little nose and say “you’re as cute as a button”. No doubt, your theater experience came in handy! Showing all of the steps was so neat to see!

  18. Really cute video, dresses and dress! I am getting ready to do some cooking videos (new for me) and I was wondering if you could share what video editing program you use? Thank you in advance!

  19. Oh how simply adorable!!! I love the music! Something about the whole video reminded of the old black and white Charlie Chaplin film bites! I simply adored them as a young girl and still do! Good job!

  20. Oh my goodness!! Best commercial ever, so fun!! Cute dress and dresser too! Thank you for always keeping it real!

  21. …spent a lot of years in advertising and marketing and have seen a lot of ads…very few hit the mark….this one was fantastic. I don’t know what your marketing goals were but the video was charming, warm and clearly demonstrated the ease and beauty of the product. Nice work.

  22. Love the dress. All this time I thought you sold chalk paint. What was I thinking!
I think that is brilliant using chalk to map out your design. M>

  23. perfect! now that’s inspiring — it is everything i want: to see a great piece of funiture with potential, see your inspiration and your process, see it go thru the ugly stage of the 1st coat, see it become better and better with every step until it becomes breathtaking! wish we could have gotten the close up crackle in there because it is one the the magical things that turns me on about this process. that is really picky though… and lastly, the natural ingredients blurb is a clincher! love love love it! thanks you guys! makes me want to go paint something!!! – karen

  24. how PERFECTLY lovely was THAT!!!!! how CUTE!!!!! wow…this is why i started reading about you…..awwww! ??

  25. Well, I’d say you hit that one outta the ball park! LOVED IT! One question, which came first the dresser or the dress????

  26. Can you do a video to demonstrate how to so the free hand painting you did on this dresser..beautiful!

  27. So cute! And I love the way it turned out! My advice would be to shoot one that is 30-45 seconds long that can be aired on networks such as DIY and hgtv! I can’t wait until chapel hill! It will be my first time ever going and I’ll get to see you and your gorgeous stuff! I can’t believe it’s only 2.5 hours away and ov never gone. I want your blue hutch so bad. It you ever decide to sell it, let me know!!

    1. Yep, this is the long version (director’s cut!) I’ll be editing a 30 second version as well.

  28. In a word, “Perfect!”. Love the color you chose, your hairstyle, the DRESS, and the blue shoes and jacket just set the whole thing off wonderfully! TA Dah!!

  29. Good job Marian! Very enjoyable. You even bloopered the bloopers video – Bloppers! 🙂

  30. So awesome! Very well done video – you let the paint/products do all the “talking”.

  31. Perfection! The dress, the music, the story-line, all fit your brand to a T! To be honest, I never wanted to use your paint cause it looked like a lot of work to get to pretty. You’ve made it look simple and sold me on giving it a try. In my book, I’d say that makes your commercial a winner! You are simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!

  32. You are so darn cute! I love everything you do and want to thank you for sharing your life with us. You have pulled me out of some pretty dark places and the inspiration feels like it is never ending. Great job! The commercial is perfectly “Miss Mustard Seed”.

  33. You gotta wear dresses more …………..you look so darn cute and fresh.Such a match to your brand…. Dump the jeans! Wonderful job!

  34. Totally charming!!! I love it!!! Now I want to buy your milk paint and give it a try!!!

  35. Love love love your commercial! It’s so you! How long did it really take to paint the dresser, though, I gotta ask! Did you have to wear your mustard seed dress a few days in a row?

  36. That degree in Performing Arts wasn’t totally wasted! Great little commercial, great little dress!

  37. Congratulations! Simple, original and utterly delightful! You’ll sell a ton of MMS product. Can’t wait to buy some milk paint and hemp oil for a couple of deserving nightstands in the garage!

  38. Adorable! Marian, you are so cute…and Kriste’s cameo in the blooper is hilarious! LOVE it all!

  39. This is adorable. =) Could you somehow incorporate looking at the diamond on your ring and then adding the finial pulls? It’s very cute how it is anyway!

  40. Loved it! And I don’t want to seem rude but I was so glad to see you without your scarf. Sometimes they make you look older. You are lovely and talented. thank you for always sharing, Sue

  41. You are funny Marian but Im not sure you would get into acting unless of course it is comedy. Lovely dresser and funny to watch. I did a similar pic only when i bought a bright yellow battery lawnmower and wore a yellow hat and t shirt to match – you could see me a mile off. 🙂

  42. So clever and cute! I look forward to seeing how you will market this commercial. I think you really hit the mark and shows your brand perfectly. Great job.

  43. Okay here goes i am new to MMS but that was so cute and i love your dresser. Have a great weekend.

  44. Wow! Great job!! It could not have turned out better if you had hired a big-time ad agency. Seriously. Your college major has paid off for you, Marian. Congrats!

  45. I LOVE the commercial! I think it’s wonderfully you! It shows your great personality and the amazing work you do! Great Job!

  46. Ah-Dorable!! Love it all…the cute dress, jacket, shoes, your hairstyle, your sweet smile, the fun music and pretty dresser! Awesome! Can’t wait to see you on tv!

  47. I don’t think I have ever commented on here before– I am a faithful lurker and yours is the only blog I take time to follow closely. But the commercial was too cute not to comment on. What a great job! So tastefully put together 🙂

I love your blog, changes or no changes.

  48. simply adorable! I love it! So fun! I was smiling all the way through. Makes me want to go out and buy furniture and all your colors of paint 🙂 Well done!

  49. I love it!! Congrats on finally filming it and I love the story behind it, it definitely represents your business and your style & product 🙂 I love how welcoming and none business like it is, great work!
