Cherry Blossom Dresser

Here’s the latest dresser…
…and how it started.
For those of you who have “known” me for a while know that my business started out as a decorative painting/mural business.  That eventually evolved into my true passion – antiques and refurbished furniture….well…and my blog and freelance writing and photography and sewing and designing…  Do you know what a nightmare it is to try to classify my business?  Anyway, I wanted to get out of the decorative painting only business, because I felt like everything had to have painted embellishments on it and some things just didn’t need that.  I don’t know why I felt that way, but I did.  I hardly even think about what extra painted detail I can add to a piece now.

For some reason…I just decided to do it on this one.  I added some very simple white cherry blossom branches to just the drawers of this dresser.  The pattern is subtle and casual, so the piece is still fairly neutral, but will definitely make a statement in the right room.

This piece is really old and had awesome original hardware and key hole covers.

I refinished and waxed the top, showing off the pretty oak.

…and here it is in my space at Lucketts.  I’m going to start holding onto pieces for the Antique Market in May, but my space was looking a little sparce, so I brought it in.  Well, it still looks a little sparce, but it will until after the fair.  It’s full…just not stuffed.

Also, I had to share that the June issue of Cottages & Bungalows has come out (my parents got their copy yesterday and sent me scans) and look who’s named as a contributor.  I knew it was going to happen, but it’s thrilling just the same.

You can read my latest article on how to remove rust in the June issue…well, when you want to remove rust!  I know Donna will have fits over this one.

In closing, my prayers go out to all of the families devastated by the storms that raged over the last couple of days.  We had high winds, tons of rain and our basement workshop flooded, but I know we only got a small taste of what other endured.

  1. MMS – I just wanted to say "thank you". I just opened my first booth at our local antiques/concept store….your pictures of your booth at Luckett's were a HUGE inspiration for me (and also, I got a huge boost of confo from your feature of my dresser!)! Check out my booth pics http://www.floferrell.blogspot.com

Thanks for inspiring the moms/housewives/artists everywhere!

  2. Hello,
This looks fantastic! My daughter loves it – it suits her style. We have a dresser just like that one that years ago we turned into a bathroom vanity. When we moved we brought it with us, but it doesn't fit any of the bathrooms in this old house – it sits – sink and all in our family room. I'd love to do something similar to this -if hubby goes along with it.
Congratulations on becoming Contributing Editor – wish you all the best!
We fared the weather well – there was a tornado coming directly our way and at the last few minutes weakened and turned north – all I could say was Thank YOU Lord!

  10. I LOVE Cherry Blossoms so much, I did an huge WOW when I opened your page. Huge congrats on your next win, the C&B; mag. Your parents must be so very, very proud of you. So fun. I have to tell you, before looking at your blog, I always used to paint the entire piece, now I am looking at my pieces differently and hoping to do some pieces soon where I can leave the top natural wood. It is so gorgeous that way!

  11. I'm going to run right out and buy that magazine because I just have to know why anyone would want to remove rust 🙂 Although, I've not been too fond of rust when it was on clothing, that's bad.
The dresser is so beautiful, I love the subtle hues your chose to work with.

  12. I had a dresser identical to this as a child! I love what you've done with it (I think the darkness of my childhood dresser is part of the reason I went through a dresser-hating phase). Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!

  13. i think the fact it's difficult to classify your biz is actually a testament to your creativity and talent, Marian. plus i get it. i'm a professional writer/artist/counselor/tutor/decorator. but what i love is being a FREELANCER. i can write what i want, when i want to, and without the constraints that would come with being a one trick pony. at least this is what i tell myself. and come to think of it, those one trick ponies make decent money. oy. freelancing sux at times. go ahead and delete this immediately. please.

    🙂

  20. Well dang!.. so much to catch up with in the blog world… 4 days in the blog world is like 40 anywere else. Just got power back.. so put in a load of laundry, and sat down to see what the fab Miss M.S. has been painting while I have been sitting the the dark or cutting down fallen trees ( take your pick).. love it all! And thanks for the good thoughts! We at the Anarchy Estate are alive, a bit smelly ( waiting for the water to heat up) and thankful to be alive after so much devistation around us.
