This is a quote from Junot Díaz, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, that I wrote in my notebook years ago. I’ve probably shared it here before, but I thought I would share it again.
“A writer is not a writer because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, or because everything she does is golden. A writer is a writer because, even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of progress, you keep writing anyway.“

As I was reviewing my manuscript, some of my own words hit me afresh. ‘You are the thing when you do the thing.”
Sometimes we hesitate to call ourselves something, especially if we’re new at it, we do it for a hobby, or we feel like we aren’t good enough to claim the title.
But you are a writer if you write. You are a painter if you paint. You are an artist if you make art. You are a musician if you make music. You’re a gardener if you garden. You’re a designer if you design things. You’re a dancer if you dance.
You might be a beginning musician or a dabbling artist, or you garden as a hobby, but that doesn’t make you less of those things. That doesn’t make you unworthy of the title.
The title is not tied to your proficiency, ability, or whether you do these things as your profession. It’s not tied to how much you produce or share. It’s not tied to awards or affirmation from anyone.
If you do the thing, you are the thing.

Excited for your book. Is there a way to preorder without using Amazon?
I am beside myself with excitement and anticipation of your book! I wait, but it won’t be easy!
I love that quote. I have always wanted to publish a book. Started two and never finished them. Thought to myself, what am I doing? I’m not a writer. You inspired me. Maybe I should pick up those two book ideas and start working. I have no timeline…I can work on them as long or short as I want. 🙂
From one Karen to another—do it, Karen! I took a year to write and self-publish my memoir four years ago and the work it took and the fulfilling moment it was when the box of brand-new books arrived was worth it. I love seeing it on our bookshelf and knowing it’s made a difference to others in my life, according to their testimonies.
I have pre-ordered the book.
I am one of many who I’m sure, who
will feel as we read it, that you are talking directly to US. Thank you. For me, the painting journey is just beginning and I am going to just keep doing it.
Thank you Marian, love the encouragement, a writer who doesn’t feel qualified to claim the role. I will keep writing though.
Thank you, Marian, for such encouraging and inspiring words! I am just starting my journey as an artist and look forward to reading your book, which I pre-ordered already. Very excited for September!
To me, it is that our roles consist of so many parts, we almost forget what we do as a constant. We are a mom, wife, daughter, friend, and partner. The part where we earn a living almost feels like an afterthought. Like a hobby next to all. I don’t think Rubens, Monet, or any other famous names had to think about dinner, getting the kids from school or any other task we do. We are so many things, Marian.
I have been following you for years and really appreciate the content you’ve put out there. You’ve inspired my creative journey while raising a young family. I look forward to this new book!!
