baked potato soup recipe

I shared a couple of weeks ago that I made a full-fat, no-skimping-on-the-good-stuff baked potato soup recipe as a treat.  I love creamy soups and casseroles, but I don’t make them very often anymore, because they are just so calorie-laden. But it was a dreary day and both Jeff and I were in the mood for soup.  A  loaded baked potato soup recipe that I used to make came to mind and I couldn’t shake it.  So, I bought the ingredients and made it and it was every bit as sumptuous and velvety as I remember it. The blue & white dishes were from . I got this particular baked potato soup recipe from a friend about 12 years ago.  When I left the corporate world, I was a stay-at-home wife for a couple of years.  I didn’t work, didn’t have kids… it was a glorious two years!  I just relished

four chairs, a pin cushion & poutine

I totally missed announcing that I was listing some new things in my online shop tonight, but they are there!  I listed a few larger pieces as well, including the hand-painted nightstands that were in our master bedroom for a few years. I’m going to head out tomorrow to do some more shopping, so hopefully I’ll have some more awesome finds to list next week.  And, speaking of awesome finds, I picked up a couple of things on my trip to New York last week.  I found these chairs for the bargain price of $45 for all four! I love how they have both a Swedish and farmhouse feel to them. The rushing isn’t in perfect condition, but the seats are still sit-able and the chairs themselves are sturdy.  A seat cushion will solve the cosmetic issues, so I’ll either order or make some soon.  I’m leaning towards making them, just

things have changed…

I’ve been needing to write this post for a while now, but the words were just never there.  I have felt stuck with my blog for a few weeks, though, and I knew I would feel stuck until I made myself sit down and write. I need to tell you, my readers, that things have changed. Don’t worry.  It’s all good stuff.  I’m not dropping any bombs, here.  I just need to put it out there, maybe more for myself than anyone else. After Lucketts, I had a lot of ideas on the “what’s next” list.  I had some plans in the works that would involve tons of hands-on work – furniture painting, shopping, putting rooms together, styling, photography, etc.  Those plans meant loads and loads of blog content, like the weeks leading up to Lucketts.  I was headed towards those plans at a steady pace and then, like I

Joining the ranks of dog owners…

Sometimes timing, place and circumstances all align and something happens that you don’t expect. So, last week, I shared that I did a photo shoot of a porch and Kriste and I had a couple of dogs for company.  As I worked on the shoot, I thought the time is coming soon when our family will get a dog.  We’ve been thinking about it for over a year, but never pulled the trigger on actually getting one. One reason was that it felt like Jeff and I wanted different things.  He wanted a specific breed, an Australian Shepherd, so he was looking at puppies on breeder websites.  I wanted to adopt a rescue dog, one that was a little older, maybe around two, who was already past the puppy stage, was house-trained, and well-behaved. So, we both looked now and then, but never spotted one we were both excited about. This weekend, Jeff went

farmhouse holiday series | red wine risotto

This year, I was invited to be a part of a farmhouse holiday decor series with an amazing line-up of bloggers, so how could I say no to that?!  Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sprinkling in some seasonal farmhouse-style blog posts to (hopefully) inspire our readers.  This week’s theme is “farmhouse kitchen and fall recipe”, so I’m sharing a red wine risotto recipe. I’ve shared this before and I’ll share it again that other than Christmas, I don’t do much in the way of seasonal decorating.  I might set out a few small pumpkins and some seasonal fruit, but that’s about it.   I haven’t gotten to any fall decorating, yet, this year, so these pictures are from last year, just showing how I like to mix in a few fall elements without going overboard. The recipe I’m sharing is very similar to one I first made as

my first foray into canning & $150 Ace Hardware Giveaway

I bought a book on canning years ago.  I liked the idea of gardening, growing, harvesting and preserving.  Well, that book was about the extent of my efforts at canning until last week. If you have read my blog for a while, you may have picked up on the fact that I love cherries.  I rejoice when they first hit the stores in May and feel like there should be a moment of silence when they are no longer available in August.  My family knows that if they see good cherries, buy them for Marian.  I’ll even pay the outrageous $8.99/pound when they make a brief appearance around Christmas. So, while cherries were plentiful, I decided to try canning some.  Well, a lot. In addition to the cherries, I also picked up tomatoes, herbs, lemons, and a few other ingredients.  I mean, if you’re going to can, you might as

haven 2016

Well, Haven 2016 is in the books.  For those who don’t know what Haven is, it’s a home bloggers conference for DIY/Home Bloggers and readers.  It is always a shot in the arm for me, being around other creatives and taking some time to network, teach, and learn. I was wearing a lot of different hats at the event.  I was a co-keynote speaker for the opening ceremony with my best blog friend, Shaunna, taught two milk paint classes with Kriste, and was a Haven Mentor, which meant I facilitated a small group of Haven attendees. The thing that had my stomach in knots was the keynote presentation.  I’m not a world-class speaker and, as talented and awesome as Shaunna is, she isn’t either.  We’re just bloggers, creatives, entreprenuers, and this was a little out of our comfort zone.  As we’re talking over things the day before, we were pretty

I’ve mentioned my distain for the task of doing laundry on more than a few occasions here on the blog and even in my book.  It’s not that it’s a horrible, draining, back-breaking task, but it’s never ending.  You finish and there are already dirty clothes piling up in the hamper.  It’s never done.  And I am a person who likes done-ness! I have found that a lot of these never-done household chores cause me stress.  I wish I could turn off the switch that makes me intolerant of a dirty, messy space, but I just can’t.   So, Jeff and I have been working together to find ways to keep the household running smoothly and my stress levels down. We’ve found some good solutions for cleaning, cooking, dishes, and money-management, but the laundry has still been an area of inefficiency…mostly because we were working with a washer and dryer that
