my favorite things lately

I have found that there is an ebb and flow to the things that catch my eye.  Of course, there are constants, ironstone being the most obvious, but there are pieces that I have found a new or renewed interest in… baskets  Baskets is one that has been the most surprising to me.  I haven’t paid much attention to baskets and was even slightly annoyed with the stacks of baskets that seem to be everywhere in secondhand shopping.  But, over the past few months, I have changed my tune. These utilitarian gems bring so much texture to a space along with stylish storage. What I look for in a basket… The older the better.  That’s the case with a lot of things for me, but I’m looking for pieces with a nice patina and age to them.  I especially love old splint baskets. Market-style or laundry-style baskets.  I also like ones

5 gallon bucket vs. the entire ocean

I went to Myrtle Beach last week with my family.  While we’re not at the same beach I went to as a kid (Long Beach on Oak Island in NC), the beach in general always reminds me of our summer vacations there that started when I was a baby and continued through high school. When I was first introduced to the ocean, it wasn’t my thing.  Some kids will sit in the sand, roll in the surf and enjoy every minute of it.  Looking at those kids now, or even adults for that matter, sitting in the sand…yikes!  It just gives me the heebie-jeebies!  I never liked grit, sand, sticky and salty skin, and being dirty in general. So, I found a solution.  I could be at the beach, in the water, in my own safe, comfy, clean way. I would sit in a five gallon bucket filled with water. I would put my

good gifts

I have always loved getting gifts.  Bring on Christmas and birthdays, special occasions and pretty packages! And an unexpected surprise of this blog has been gifts.  Even my mom, who knows how thrilled I get at a present, commented on it.  “Well, you certainly got into the right business!” These gifts are from readers who have become friends over the years of following my journey and want to send me a token of that friendship. Last week, I received several unexpected packages.  One contained notecards with my name on them and a little blue bike with a basket… Just like the one I learned to ride on and recently sold at Lucketts… Another was a grain sack with blue stripes and an “MM” monogram. This custom sign with an excerpt of “my” verse on it… And a local reader brought me this rusty metal doll bed that she fetched from the trash…

creative endeavors & “ladies who lunch”

If you haven’t figured it out, I am definitely the “creative type”.  I get lost in my art, whatever it happens to be that day…sewing, refinishing, painting, music…and I tend to forget appointments and I run late for things and I burn dinner and I realize I worked on something that stirred my soul instead of something that really needed to be done. It’s been a bit of a challenge to balance that desire to create and the discipline it takes to run a business.  And, when a lot of my creative endeavors are tied up in my business, I can start to feel like the creativity is caged.  It can happen within these parameters and those who are creative know that’s just not good for creativity. You need an open field, room to stretch, time to play and fiddle. So, I’ve been working on creative things that don’t have anything

the business brain & the human heart

Before I get into the thick of it, I have to say that you all overwhelm me so often!  The first installment of the Lucketts Leftover Sale went live today and pieces were selling before I could even get everything live on the site.  So, I’m “listening” to what you’re “saying” and I need to have more things for sale online on a more regular basis.  That’s a part of a grand plan, anyway, but I can have sales like these until all of that is sorted out. That means I need to do some shopping just for you!  Let me know in the comments what you’d like to buy, so I can order it/hunt it out. If you missed out on pieces this sale, I still have a lot more to list and I will work on that tomorrow (Friday).  As I did with this sale, I’ll list items as

tiny topiaries & “just our stuff”

Last year was a big year for me.  I finally decided to give gardening and indoor plants a real effort.  I was actually going to water, tend, prune, weed, and fertilize.  Guess what happened?  I didn’t kill everything! I only killed some things, but I learned a lot along the way. I was not excited about warmer temperatures, because the A/C is broken in my van, but I was looking forward to the greenhouses being full again!  When my mom and I were antique shopping on Friday, we popped into a couple of local nurseries.  I was looking specifically for topiaries, but only found a half-blackened rosemary topiary.  I did find some little plants that could be trimmed up and made into topiaries, so I thought I would give that a try. I trimmed them up and tied them with cotton string to some little sticks I found in the

bObi robotic vacuum review & giveaway

When someone sends you an e-mail asking if you would like to try out their robotic mop and vacuum, you say yes.  You just do.  Because it’s a robotic vacuum AND mop! Before I had the studio and I worked from home, I felt like I was able to keep the house cleaner, except when we were in the “fuzzy-floor-days” of Lucketts prep.  The studio has relieved my house of the duties of being a photo studio, storage facility, and headquarters of Mustard Seed Interiors, but it’s also meant that I’m not here during the day to do some spot cleaning when the house needs it. I’ve had to schedule my cleaning for evenings and weekends, just like I did when I worked in the corporate world.  Just like most of you do, I’m sure!  It’s been an adjustment and Jeff and I have been working together to find ways

four questions & Haven 2016

If you’re clicking over from Mom 4 Real, welcome!  Everyone else, you’re welcome, too! I have a backlog of furniture makeovers and projects to share, but today I am sharing about the upcoming Haven blog conference. I posted a couple of weeks ago that I am a co-opening-keynote-speaker with my dear friend, Shaunna, and I’m also a Haven Maven Mentor along with some amazing bloggers… The whole idea of having mentors is that we can be available to you to help you squeeze the most out of your time at Haven.  I love encouraging others, so I’m stoked about being a mentor. As a mentor, the Haven team asked me four questions and here are my answers… 1. How many years have you been blogging? I first posted to my blog August 2009, so that means almost seven years!  Wow.  I didn’t even realize it has been that long.  Those seven years translates
