haven, lucketts & thinking bigger

This week has been about diving in and getting things done.  Chairs that have been sitting around for over a year?  Done.  An old mirror frame that has gone unsold at sales twice?  Revamped.  Stuff that is just stuff taking up space?  Pitched.  It feels pretty awesome. I have to admit that one of the pieces that was pitched was a piano stool that beat me.  It’s the only piece I can think of that just outright defeated me. I worked on that thing off and on over a three year period and it didn’t do anything I wanted it to and never looked remotely close to good.  The pink stain bled through three coats of sealant.  The paint clumped and peeled in the most atrocious way.  I couldn’t stomach even looking at it, so I heaved it into a dumpster yesterday without remorse.  I pity whoever dives in to get it,

what makes your heart feel alive

Jeff and I have been talking a lot lately about what “makes us tick” or, more eloquently put, what makes our heart feel alive. I think society encourages us from an early age to be sensible and doing the things that make your heart feel alive don’t always sound sensible.  Get on the honor roll.  Your SAT score will dictate how successful you’ll be in life.  Go to college.  Get a job with a retirement plan.  Settle down and fall in line.  I wonder how many people are living a “plan B life” because they were told to be sensible? Now, I’m not talking about throwing caution to the wind, shirking responsibility or just doing whatever you want at all cost, no matter who it hurts.  I’m not talking about selfishly pursuing whatever makes you happy.  I’m also not talking about what moves you emotionally or the depth of love you feel for

favorite Ikea finds

We live about 90 minutes away from an Ikea, so I don’t go there often.  Maybe once every three or four years.  On Friday, my mom and I made the trek and spent the day “doing Ikea.”  It really is like a theme park.  Wear comfortable shoes, get your map, make your lists, so you don’t miss anything.  Make your plans, so you hit lunch at the right time.  It’s an event. I went with a pretty sizable list of things I wanted, mostly for home organization projects I’ve been chipping away at when I have the time. It’s the kind of store where it’s easy to keep throwing things in the cart, though, even with a focused list.  That’s just $5.00 or $1.50 and who knows when I’ll be back at an Ikea again, so I had better get it! (Those woodland cookie cutters were totally an impulse buy,

favorite things | antique flatware

I’m sometimes asked what I look for when I’m out shopping for things for my home or things to sell.  The broad, non-specific answer is that I look for whatever speaks to me.  Certain things just capture my attention.  I like them. Why do you like what you like?  You just do. One of the things that I am a total sucker for is antique flatware, specifically bone-handled, French ivory and Bakelite.  And the older, the better. I first noticed Bakelite in a “country” decorating book years ago.  I don’t remember which one, but I loved it and started hunting for it.  It took a few years before I found a set I was willing to splurge on.  I still have that first set, but have bought and sold (and kept) many pieces since then. My most recent acquisition was these Civil war era bone-handled flatware with pewter inlay.  Would you

country living | behind the scenes

Several of you have already come upon a secret I’ve been keeping since June of last year.  My home was featured in the March 2016 issue of Country Living. AHHHHHH! And, yes, lots of geeking out has taken place.  Lots of high-pitched squeals and pinch-me moments and slowing down to soak it all in. It was the most involved shoot I have ever been a part of.  It was a half day of styling and two full days of shooting and a total takeover of our house! I cleaned like a maniac and tried to finish everything that had been languishing on my home to-do list.  I knew it was overboard, but I didn’t want a fluff ball or unfinished piece of trim in a picture in Country Living!  I wanted to give it my best. About a week before the shoot, the boxes started to arrive.  They came in at a trickle at

money talk

I remember it vividly.  Like it was yesterday.  I was a teenager with my own checking account, which was awesome.  What wasn’t awesome is that my dad had to drive me to the bank, because I had overdrawn the account.  Like, a lot.  He sent me to the desk by myself to tell the manager that I hadn’t reconciled my account, I spent more money than I had, I was irresponsible and it wouldn’t happen again.  Talk about a humiliating, but valuable life lesson. I became very good at reconciling my accounts and paying all of my bills after that ordeal and I carried that mindset (or habit, maybe) into adulthood. While I’ve always been good at keeping track of my money, I’ve never been good at budgeting it.  I would try, but it always seemed tedious, cumbersome and unrealistic.  We would be going along fine and then something would

CEO lessons & january goals

Sunday night, I was conflicted.  We had just flown in from our trip to the Vintage Whites Market.  I had been “working” all weekend and I really wanted (and needed) to just spend Monday at home…cleaning, hitting the grocery store, unpacking, etc.  You know the drill.  I own my own business, so I can do that, right? Yes, I could.  But I wasn’t going to.  I’ve declared 2016 as the year I’m going to lean into growth and work on filling out the role of “president” of Mustard Seed Interiors LLC. I recently saw a preview for a movie, The Intern.  I don’t know if the movie is good or not.  As I said, I just saw the preview, so my mention of it isn’t an endorsement.  But in the preview, a young entrepreneur and CEO of a company she built was threatened with being removed from her position as the

Vintage Whites Market Recap

When much of a business is done online and from home, it’s easy to be a hermit.  I’m a bit of a homebody and, while I’m an outgoing person, I just like staying home.  I like being in my studio, creating. But, there are some opportunities that are worth the “disruption”.  When I was invited to The Vintage Whites Market by the co-founders Jana and Vanessa, I knew immediately that I wanted to go.  I was easily able to persuade Jeff, because it was in Colorado (and he loves Colorado.) So, we headed out last Thursday for Denver. Though the weather was cold and snowy (making it so we didn’t see mountains until we left on Sunday), the event and everything about it did not disappoint. Ruffles and twinkle lights for days… The venue was packed with creative people and pretty things. And I saw some familiar faces… …and a lot
