Master Bedroom

linen fabric swatches & master bedroom progress

Remember my design breakthrough in the master bedroom that I shared a few weeks ago?  Well, I’ve been moving forward…little steps to make the plan happen.  And it feels good.  It’s a room that’s had me stuck for a while and I’m glad to have a clear direction that I’m excited about.  It’s definitely been a lesson in patience and playing. Since I shared that plan, I ordered a few more yards of the Aviary Toile fabric (by French General) in order to make the bed crown.  I also ordered some pleater tape to pleat the checked fabric and give it a nice, finished look.  Now, I need to get some specific measurements to draw out a plan for cutting and sewing the fabric before attaching it to a plywood piece cut into a half-oval shape.  The plywood will then be mounted to the ceiling.  I also need to figure

productive decorative play

I was in a real funk on Saturday.  I think it had a lot to do with the dreary weather.  It was gray and our daily walk was shortened by a cool wind and a spittle of rain.  (Jeff’s second walk with Sebastian was shortened by a downpour laced with hail!)  The weather was just not conducive to a cheery day.  On top of that, I was just feeling down.  I wasn’t focusing on gratitude. I did something I rarely do and just sat on the sofa and watched a movie on my iPad, tuning everyone else out with headphones.  I reconciled my bank accounts because it was something that needed to be done anyway.  And Jeff gave me precious time alone in my studio to listen to music and make color charts. It was just what I needed.  I focused on mixing colors and applying them to a grid

the melodeon

You caught a glimpse of the melodeon I purchased from the old schoolhouse/music hall in yesterday’s post, but it was buried under a bunch of stuff.  Here is where it ended up in our house and how it looks after a good cleaning and polishing with some MMS Milk Paint Hemp Oil. I have been looking for something to go under the master bedroom window since we moved here and I haven’t found anything that hit the nail on the head.  I had a $50 thrift store desk there for a while, but it was more of a place-holder than anything else.  I moved that desk into the sewing room and put the melodeon in its place. (I wrapped some fabric around the seat cushion for now, but I’m going to fix the seat and upholster it.) The style of this piece fits much better with the French wardrobe and

options for the master bedroom

Last week, I shared that our master bedroom was not quite finished and I was mulling over some ideas for how to take this beautiful room and push it over the edge.  I received so many wonderful ideas, thoughts, and suggestions on that post, so thank you for that.  As I read your comments and thought through the possibilities, I settled on a few options that could work and I thought I would share them. As a refresher, here is how the room currently looks… A few of you mentioned the desk and, in my last post, I failed to say that this is on the list of things to remove from the space.  I just haven’t found the perfect thing to replace it, so it’ll hang out there until I do.  At that time, I’ll move it into the sewing room to use as a sewing desk.  It’ll provide

What’s missing from your room?

A few months ago, I was writing some content for a potential book project and I discovered that I was talking more to myself than to anyone else.  I was saying something to the effect of, “If you’re feeling stuck in a room, the likely culprit is the lack of a statement piece.”  As soon as I finished writing that segment, I ran up the steps and stood in the doorway of our master bedroom.  I took in the view of the large, light-filled space. It’s a beautiful room.  I’ve never had a prettier room in my life.  But it’s not quite there.  And it has nothing to do with the room itself.  I was given a perfect blank slate without any quirks to contemplate.  It has everything to do with the fact that there isn’t a statement piece – a compass to which all of the other design elements

non-sponsored follow-up Sleep Number bed review

In December of 2017, I received a Sleep Number bed as a part of a blog sponsorship and I shared an initial review of it (as a part of that sponsorship) in April of 2018.  You can find that post HERE if you’re interested. I am sometimes asked about products I receive through sponsorships and if I still use them or love them.  Would I buy the product as a regular customer?  Would I still give it a thumbs up even if I’m not being paid? We’ve been sleeping in the Sleep Number bed for just over a year, so I thought it would be a good time to write a non-sponsored follow-up for those who might be curious about it. In summary, I can tell you that we’re still loving the bed.  It addressed the major issue we had of being on total opposite ends of the spectrum when

summer bed & fluffy towels

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by .  As always, all opinions expressed are honest and my own. We had a late spring here in Minnesota, but summer is definitely here now.  It was officially signaled by the fact that we finally kicked off our down comforter in the middle of the night.  I am always eager to bring it out each fall and am reluctant to put it away when the weather warms. This year, though, it wasn’t a sad day when I folded up the thick feather decker for the summer, because now we have a  from to replace it. It is the perfect weight to offer the coziness I like, but it’s breathable and light enough that we don’t wake up sweating under it. So I don’t add more bulk, I didn’t put it in a cover, but sandwiched it between the sheets and our quilt. Before I

pine desk refresh

One thing that has been on my shopping list for a while is a desk for the master bedroom.  Since Jeff has an office at the church, he doesn’t need one at the house.  He occassionally does work at home and requested a desk in our room, since it’s a quiet room, pretty well removed from the rest of the house.  I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I knew I would know it when I saw it.  I was thinking it might be along the lines of a simple writing desk, but when I came upon this pine desk in a local antique shop a couple of weeks ago, it caught my eye and I thought it would work in the space… It had some short-cut repairs, was missing a knob, and it was dirty, but it was solid, had a nice shape, and a pretty
