painted granite fireplace surround reveal

If you missed the full tutorial on the painted granite fireplace surround, you can find it HERE.  I almost didn’t take pictures along the way, because I wasn’t sure if it was going to work!  I’m so glad I took the time to document it, though, because it turned out great. Here is how the fireplace surround looked before… …and here is how it looks now!  I’m sure you noticed that we also put in hardwood floors and we’re in the middle of building a faux coffered ceiling. I am absolutely over the moon with how it turned out!  It was a relatively quick and easy process and I was able to complete the project entirely with products I already had on hand for other projects, so it was free to me.  If you had to purchase the materials, it would cost around $120 with lots of leftover paint and

how to paint a granite fireplace surround

One of the downsides to buying a house that is new-ish and in nice condition is that it’s hard to rip out and replace things that are perfectly nice.  In the other homes we’ve owned, I’ve been able to take the approach of “we can’t make it any worse, so let’s just go for it!”  In this house, we can make things worse and also make them look cheap and shoddy in comparison to the quality of the home.  So, I was hesitant to do any sort of DIY treatment to the granite fireplace surround in the living room.  There was nothing wrong with it, but it just wasn’t my taste.  I can’t tell you how much research I’ve done over the past three years on how to paint a granite fireplace surround before I finally took the plunge! I wasn’t even sure I wanted to paint it, so I

the first scratch in the hardwood floors

I think one of the reasons that I like old things is that they are already worn.  They wear scratches, dents, dings, chips, cracks, and crazing, and any new damage that is done to them will likely go unnoticed.  They are already imperfect and there is no pressure to keep them pristine.  Well, newly installed and freshly refinished hardwood floors do come with some amount of pressure to keep them scratch-free for as long as humanly possible. For me, that turned out to be less than 24 hours. I knew that these hardwood floors would scratch, because we have them on our stairs, in the dining room, my office, and 15-year-old floors in the kitchen and eating area.  All of them are scratched to some degree from the pets, from furniture scooting, from dropping things, from kids, from life.  I knew these floors, which are in the two most trafficked

the process of living in a house while refinishing floors

Well, we’ve made it to the other side of having new wood floors installed in the living room while also refinishing the kitchen & eating area floors.  And, we were living in the house through the entire process.  In fact, every time we’ve either worked on floors ourselves or had them done, we’ve stayed in the house through the upheaval.  Several people asked if I would share the process as well as some tips for how we made it work, so that’s what this post is all about! DIY or pay the pros? The first big decision when it comes to installing or refinishing wood floors is figuring out if you want to tackle it yourself or hire it out.  We’ve done both and the decision was largely dictated by budget as well as the scale of the project and availability.  There is a small portion of it that boiled

hardwood floors in the living room

A couple of weeks ago, a stack of hardwood flooring was delivered to our house to acclimate before it’s installed in our living room! I have been wanting to replace this carpet with hardwood floors from the time we moved in, but I was in the minority.  Jeff and the boys like that it’s comfy underfoot and good for wrestling.  I have always disliked carpet simply because it’s difficult to keep clean.  And a cream carpet in a major traffic path is even harder to keep clean.  It doesn’t look bad in the pictures, but I’m not focusing on the carpet… We do take our shoes off and we clean it with a carpet cleaner a few times a year, but there are still stains and a discolored path from over 15 years of use.  The staining is much more evident when I focus the camera on it… Oh, I

hanging the antique birdcage

Even if decorating comes naturally and you have a great space to work with, there is still the possibility of getting stuck.  It’s just normal and a natural part of the creative process.  Some things come easily and others take more thought, time, and discovery.  Such has been the case with this corner in my living room.  I think this wall is a little tricky because it’s a fairly small stretch of wall between a doorway and built-ins.  Whatever piece of furniture that is placed there needs to allow for the doors to open, work well with the built-ins, and also visually balance out the piece on the other side of the doorway.  In my case, that is an antique hutch… Shortly after we moved in, I hung a collection of ironstone plates over a wood dresser just to fill the space.  I always pictured hanging a mirror there that

styling the living room shelves

As I was fiddling around with the accessories in the living room, I finally decided to rework the built-ins on the right side of the fireplace.  I painted them white shortly after I moved in and filled them up with one thing I have plenty of – .  (You can read about painting the built-ins HERE.)  It was just easy, pretty, and something I could call “done” when I had so many other things I wanted to work on in the house.  But, I wanted to revisit styling these living room shelves… I have wanted to add some warmth and interest there for a while, but even though it’s a fairly small project, it was too much to do when I was having issues with my shoulder.  Earlier last week, I started just moving things in the space…a few books, a couple of pieces of blue and white transferware, just

Other Living Room Plans

Sometimes I have trouble sitting back and enjoying what I’ve accomplished in the light of the size of my to-do list!  I’m sure many of you can relate!  I realized as I was putting this post together that there is a to-do list a mile long made up of all the little and big projects I want to do in the house.  Some of them are as simple as repairing a tear in a cushion or slipcover (I have a few of those) or as involved as installing wainscoting and crown molding. But, I just need to remember that #1 – it’s not a race and #2 – that list will shrink one project at a time.  Little steps to get big things done. So, one thing that I want to do is change out the fabric on the backs of the French chairs.  The fabric worked great in my
