built-in shelf styling

As Jeff and I have been working through the house, knocking out little projects and giving rooms a refresh, I decided to play around with the accessories a bit.  First of all, the shelves needed a good dusting and that’s best done properly when everything is removed.  Second, I was craving a simpler, cleaner look.  I’ve been this way since I was a teenager.  I will fill up a space, adding layers and little things that I find, and then I’ll swing in the other direction and be ready for a less cluttered look.  This behavior definitely displays the tension between the collector in me and the neatnik.  So, I thought this little refresh was a good chance to talk about shelf styling and to take a look at how this corner of our living room has evolved over the years. When we first moved in, I painted the living

the new living room jute rug & winter mantel

Just a few days before Christmas, I received a for the living room.  I had the white jute rug for about a year and a half and it was showing wear much faster than other jute rugs I’ve owned.  I wrote an initial review about it HERE where I mentioned that the weave was a little loose.  Furniture legs ended up getting caught in the loose weave of that particular rug and the white color started to get a little dingy.  With teenage boys, a dog, and two cats, that wasn’t too surprising. l | So, I decided to go with a natural jute rug and one that had a tighter weave.  Jeff doesn’t generally make comments about decor, but when we rolled this new jute rug out, the , he immediately commented how much better he liked it.  (This is not a sponsored post, but the rug was given to

the antique clock that finally came home

This story starts all the way back in November of 2018 when we visited Jeff’s family in North Carolina for Thanksgiving.  I went to a beautiful local shop (The Mercantile in Knightdale, NC) to do a milk paint demo while I was there.  This shop has amazing vendors and I wanted to buy so many things!  I ended up buying just a few small things, but I took photographs of the displays and pieces I loved the most, including this antique clock.  It was priced well, but we were in my mother-in-law’s Camry, so we wouldn’t be able to get it home.  So, I appreciated it and then left it for someone else to buy. I posted about the clock here on my blog and when I got back home to Minnesota, I received a text from my dad letting me know he had bought it for me!  Now, my

Living Room Shelf Styling Tweak

I have to confess that I’ve been feeling a little itchy to rearrange!  I used to move furniture like it was a sport, but I’ve settled down in recent years.  It has a lot to do with the fact that I’m not buying and selling antiques currently, so I don’t have a steady stream of cool stuff, tempting me to continuously shuffle things around in my home to try out the latest find that I want to keep.  I think it can also be attributed to the fact that my interests and creative pursuits have expanded.  I am choosing to spend time at the easel or take an art class or learn to knit over repeatedly rearranging furniture and accessories.  I am a little more content to keep things as they are instead of always trying something different.  So, instead of causing complete upheaval in the living room, I made

woven jute living room rug

I’ve been asked a lot about my woven jute living room rug on Instagram, so I thought I would write a post about it share the source as well as why I chose it along with a review. When we had hardwoods installed this summer, I knew I would need to find an area rug for the space.  If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that rugs are a challenge for me!  I have learned that I tend to like quieter rugs and most of the rugs in our house are woven or braided jute.  They are relatively inexpensive, forgiving, and hardwearing.  They are also not too precious that I freak out over spills and pet accidents (which always happen on rugs or carpets!) So, when I was looking for a living room rug, I wanted to stay in that world.  Some day, I might want to

Blue & White Christmas Living Room 2020

The living room is definitely my favorite room to decorating for Christmas.  I love having a mantel for the stockings and a perfect place to put the tree, so we can all enjoy it.  And I love how everything feels festive and seasonal while still working with my color scheme.  Here’s a little tour of how my blue & white Christmas living room looks this year… You can see more details about the tree in THIS POST. We moved the dresser that is usually in that corner out to the garage and I swapped out the antique birdcage that hangs on the wall with a mirror.  I’ve wanted to try a mirror there for a long time, but haven’t found one that’s the right shape, size, and finish.  I finally found and it works perfectly!  I don’t know if I’ll move it after we take the tree down or keep

fluffing up faux boxwood topiaries

I have been looking for a pair of faux topiaries to put in the living room ever since I styled a couple of photos with these live ones.  I wish I could keep these perpetually alive and beautiful in this room, but there just isn’t enough natural light to keep them happy.  Finding faux boxwood topiaries were going to be the best option. While my mom and I were at Hobby Lobby, I found a pair of faux boxwood topiaries that were pretty perfect.  I like the pots, the size and scale was just what I wanted and I even liked the spiral shape.  I wouldn’t say that they look real, but they look nice.  The problem is that one of them had some issues.  It was about two inches shorter than the other one and had clumps missing.  The price for that one was reduced, so I decided to
