Laundry Room Makeover | Part 4 | Sources & Organization

In case you missed any of the other posts in the Laundry Room Makeover Series, you can catch up here… Part One – Inspiration & Bead Board Installation Part Two – The Reveal Part Three – Tools & Tips In this post, I’ll share sources for everything (well, as much as I can source) and will also talk through the functionality of this space. I must say that organizing the shelves was my favorite part of the makeover.  I love it when things that are useful and hard-working can also look pretty and be out in the open.  It really doesn’t have to be form OR function.  It can be both. So, let’s talk about the shelf over the sink first, since that’s where I put the things I use most.  Because the washer and dryer are so tall, it’s a little hard to reach the cabinets over them without

Laundry Room Makeover | Part 3 | Tools & Tips

In part one, you saw the inspiration and progress for the laundry room makeover.  In part two, you saw the reveal.  Now, it’s time to get into the nitty gritty details of the tools and products I used. First of all, the kind of bead board I used was a thin, tongue and groove plank bead board from Home Depot.  It’s double-beaded, solid wood bead board by Pine Ridge.  I wasn’t able to find it on the Home Depot website, but I found it in the wood paneling section.  It comes in 8′ lengths and a shorter length for chair-rail height installation. As you can see, it has grooves on the back, which makes it easier to do “rip cuts” (cuts lengthwise), when needed.  Because it’s thin, I found it easy to work with (cut, fit around light switches, etc.) and I was able to sit it right on top

Laundry Room Makeover | Part 2 | The Reveal

Okay, well, it’s almost the laundry room reveal.  This is how it looks after all of the big stuff is done.  I am waiting for the new schoolhouse-style light fixture and I still need to paint the trim on all of the doors, but those are just small finishing details and I don’t want to wait another week to show you the finished space! Someone on Instagram asked why I was spending so much time and energy on a room no one sees.  Well, I see it!  That’s why I like my bedroom closet organized and the drawers in my studio tidy.  I’m the only one who sees those spaces, but it matters to me that they are organized and look nice.  Aside from that, more people do see this laundry room, since it’s right off our kitchen and it’s the entrance from the garage.  People are coming and going through

paint, corbels, & bead board

I have to admit that when I started this laundry room project, I had an idea of how it would look, but it wasn’t completely clear.  I second-guessed myself along the way, mostly about the laminate cabinets. I originally thought I would leave the doors on and just paint them.  Then I decided to remove the doors above and below the sink.  Then I decided to remove all of the doors and back them with bead board. Now what?  I felt like I was heading in the right direction, but where do I go from here.  I was planning to paint them in my custom-mixed Boxwood green, because I had it on hand and so those cabinets would tie into the kitchen island and butler’s pantry.  I also felt like the green would make a feature of them. But, would the contrast be too high with the white walls?  Would

laundry room makeover | part one

If you follow me on my Instagram Stories, you know that I’ve been working hard on my laundry room/mudroom over the past several days.  It’s still not finished, but it’s well on the way and I thought I would share the details of what I’m doing and show you the progress.  As point of reference, here is how the room looked before… …and I use the word “room” very loosely.  This is a small space that’s basically a hallway, closet, utility sink, and a place for the washer and dryer.  My mom pointed out that it’s bigger than her laundry room, which is just a hallway with a washer and dryer in it, but it’s smaller than a lot of the mudroom/laundry rooms that you’re seeing in suburban family homes these days. Despite it being a little tight when folding clothes, I love this space.  I am throughly enjoying having

dining table makeover

Independent of one another, two of my friends from church asked me if I could give them advice on refinishing a table.  It occurred to me that I have a table I want to refinish, too, so why not make a day of it and refinished all of the tables together?  Projects are always more fun when fellowship is involved and, as an added bonus, we have boys who are the same age and they could play together while we worked.  Projects are also more fun with the kiddos are occupied and happy! Since I was working with friends on their tables as well as my own, I didn’t take the time to do a tutorial for this one, but I’ll share links to tutorials I’ve written in the past when I used the same techniques. Here is the table before… It wasn’t in bad shape, but it had a

kitchen table end chairs

I have a soft spot for antique chairs and I have bought many over the years.  The majority of the chairs in our home are old.  I have learned, though, that when it comes to the chairs our family sits in every day for meals, it’s nice to go with chairs that aren’t petite in scale and potentially rickety. The use of “decorative chairs” in our house over the years has become a joke in our family.  Recently, I told Jeff I passed up a $6.00 French-style upholstered chair at a thrift store and his reply was, “Why?  Was it actually comfortable and you could sit in it?” Okay, okay.  I earned that, but I’ve gotten much better at making sure you can sit in all of the chairs in our house. Anyway, in addition to having sturdy chairs, I also wanted ones that were relatively comfortable, with padded seats

milk paint mural tutorial

One of the reasons I decided to DIY my own dining room mural was so I could share how to do it with others.  Well, I realized about 10 minutes into it that I was totally flying by the seat of my pants and I didn’t know if it would even look good in the end!  It’s hard to teach something when I’m just making it up as I go. This project had been on my mind for a few months, but I kept dragging my feet on actually starting it.  As I would begin to formulate a plan and gather colors, memories of a failed attempt at a chinoiserie mural haunted me and intimidated me.  Years ago, pre-blog, I decided to paint a white-on-blue chinoiserie-style (sort of an asian toile) mural in our master bedroom.  I knew just how I wanted it to look in my head.  Jeff was
