Room Makeovers

guest room design plan

Now that the foyer project is nearing completion, I’m focusing on a few other rooms I’d like to work on this year.  I’ve already mentioned some building projects and rearranging that will be happening in the studio in order to provide more storage and make the space more functional.  I’ll also be working on my home office to address my lack of filing, need for more desk space, and better storage.  Both of those rooms have to be hardworking and I’m looking forward to addressing some of the functional issues I’ve noticed over the past year and a half of use. The “fun room” I’ll be working on is our guest room.   Right now, it has a couple of really lovely anchor pieces of furniture – the French-style bed and the antique German wardrobe wearing original mustard yellow paint. Otherwise, it’s bascially a cream/beige box.  I’m taking those two pieces as

half-finished stairs

I always have to fight the urge to wait to post something until it’s completely finished.  As I shared in yesterday’s post, I went to a concert over the weekend where Jason Gray performed a half-written song.  This also brings to mind that some of my favorite pieces in the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvré were those that were simple studies and unfinished works.  Much of what we experience in our life is unfinished or half-done. So, it is in that spirit that I am sharing my half-finished stairs today!  This was an unplanned project, but one I’m so happy we’re doing for reasons of practicality and aesthetics. Wall-t0-wall carpet is generally not my thing.  I’m okay with it in certain rooms but I draw the line at kitchens, bathrooms, and stairs.  Well, most stairs.  Our stairs going down to the basement are carpeted and that’s fine.  But 13-year-old beige carpet

foyer & half bath updates

I think foyer makeovers are underrated.  It’s a space that’s often neglected or at the bottom of the to-do list because it’s just a passthrough.  You simply walk through it to get to a room where you actually spend your time.  The thing about a foyer, though, is it’s the first thing you see when you walk in your front door.  It’s the first thing guests see.  In our house, since it connects the dining room, home office, half bath, living room, upstairs, and basement, we walk through it multiple times each day. Before this makeover started, there wasn’t anything offensive or bad or dated or ugly about the space, but it didn’t flow with all of the other changes we have made in the adjoining rooms.  In that way, it felt disjointed and overlooked. The soft blue/gray on the wall, bright white trim, painted doors, and that beautiful slate

hall/foyer update

Believe it or not, fireplace season has started in Rochester, Minnesota!  My boys love switching the fire on, turning the chairs to face the firebox, and basking in the warmth.  And I love watching them do it. We also had our first snow.  I thought it was just going to be a few flurries, but it snowed almost all day and we ended up with about two inches by the end of the day!  People keep telling me this isn’t usual, but we got snow in October last year as well, so I think they are just in denial. I happen to love winter and snow, so I was enjoying it immensely.  I will admit that there is a small part of me that feels like we only experienced fall for about 2 1/2 weeks.  I hope it will reemerge for just a little longer.  Our leaves haven’t even finished

antique german wardrobe

Before I share the wardrobe, I have to confess that I have been completely distracted by my obsession with my upcoming trip to France and Italy.  I very rarely use the word obsessed about anything, but it’s true.  I have been engrossed, consumed, and beset with all things having to do with this trip.  It’s where my daydreams drift and what I’m reading about and the topic of my phone calls and what I’m thinking about when I’m shopping or cooking or painting.  The future beyond the trip is just a small blip on my radar right now.  Everything else is about creative workshops in Barga and leather shopping in Florence and museums in Paris. So, you have to just give me some latitude… I do have something non-trip related to share today, though.  Remember the antique German wardrobe I found at Gold Rush a couple of weeks ago?  Well,

foyer & staircase plans

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been focusing my home improvement efforts on the main floor of our home over our first year here.  I’ve done a little bit of painting in the basement and worked on the master bedroom (mostly because of our collaboration with Sleep Number), but aside from that, our money, time, and elbow grease have been focused on where we live the most… the kitchen, kitchen eating area, living room, dining room, my office and studio, and soon we’ll be turning our attention to the space that connects it all – the foyer (which also includes the stairs and half bath.) I assure you, my house is not decorated for Christmas!  This is from last December and it’s just the best picture I had of the foyer through the front door! Yes.  It’s too soon. Anyway, here is what it looks like without the garland (that was

Wellsworks Furniture Farm Table

Within a couple of weeks of moving into our new house, my mom and I picked up a table and chair set off of craigslist.  The size was perfect and I loved the little scalloped, dotted detail around the apron.  I thought it was the perfect candidate for painting and refinishing and would see our family through the high school years and beyond. But, as it happens with some purchases, this one wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.  The top, that I thought was solid wood, was actually veneer and it was chipping off in a few places.  I thought it was sturdy, but it turned out the table was sagging at the seam where the table opened to allow for leaves.  I painted and refinished it and the top accepted the white wash unevenly, leaving an unsightly stripe down the middle.  I had already spent hours on it and

Laundry Room Makeover | Sources

In case you missed any of the other posts in the Laundry Room Makeover Series, you can catch up here… Part One – Inspiration & Bead Board Installation Part Two – The Reveal Part Three – Tools & Tips In this post, I’ll share sources for everything (well, as much as I can source) and will also talk through the functionality of this space. I must say that organizing the shelves was my favorite part of the makeover.  I love it when things that are useful and hard-working can also look pretty and be out in the open.  It really doesn’t have to be form OR function.  It can be both. So, let’s talk about the shelf over the sink first, since that’s where I put the things I use most.  Because the washer and dryer are so tall, it’s a little hard to reach the cabinets over them without
