indigo pysanky egg tutorial

I confessed on my Instagram Stories earlier this week that I still had my white lights and greenery hanging up outside.  As in Christmas lights and greenery.  I think mid-March is past the line of Christmas decor looking wintry and acceptable!  But, it’s been cold and snowy and, when it’s been warmer, I haven’t wanted to spend my time taking down Christmas decor.  Anyway, it finally happened today!  The funny thing is that I had it built up in my head as this big, annoying thing I had to do and it took less than 10 minutes. So, with the Christmas season now officially over (or way beyond over), I decided to dust off an old Easter project I did years ago.  I was introduced to Pysanky, or traditional Ukrainian eggs, by my dear friend Shari.  She was the perfect friend for the stage of my life when I needed

spring cleaning

It’s that time of year!  Well…almost.  Our February has been so warm and mild that it has felt like spring.  We’ve even thrown the windows wide open a few days and I’ve gotten the itch to start some cleaning, home maintenance, and organization…all of which, I suppose, can be classified as spring cleaning. I have started on a few things, like cleaning out the hanging space in my closet, washing all of the quilts in the house, and reworking the open shelves in the bathroom… But cleaning and organizing can be like dominos and I’m realizing that some nooks and crannies need a good scrubbing. It was about this time that I received an e-mail, asking if I would be interested in partnering with eBay on spring cleaning.  My first thought was, perfect timing!  Then I realized that I had never thought of checking out eBay for tools and supplies for spring cleaning

gardening season two begins…

Just an FYI that the first Lucketts Leftover online sale will start tomorrow (Thursday, June 2, at 9:00 pm EST.)  You can click over to my online shop HERE. Our house has a ways to go before it looks really charming from the curb.  It has a 1940’s sweetness about it and the landscaping is getting there, but we’ve put much more time and attention to the inside of the house and it’s only been in the past couple of years that we have started really working on some projects outside. But, it’s all coming along. Now that Lucketts is over, I hit a local nursery to get some flowers for the window boxes and spent some time sprucing things up. See the dead weeds in the window boxes?  Yeah, nice.  The topiaries, Eugenia, flanking the front door are leftovers from Lucketts.  I shopped my own sale! The holly bushes

antique haul for the Lucketts Spring Market

One thing that I love about what I do and being “the boss” is that I can (most of the time) chose to do the kind of work that suits my mood on any particular day.  Last Friday, I was in a get-out-of-the-studio mood, so I decided to do some more shopping for the upcoming Lucketts Spring Market (May 20-22, 2016.) My mom and I set out for a newly opened store about 25 minutes away and hit another local shop on the way.  We ended up with a pretty nice haul! I have been wanting to do more videos lately, but keep putting it off.  It’s hard for me to take pictures of everything after these big shopping trips, so a video is an easy way to share it with you and I can also talk through my thought process for why I buy what I buy… My hair is in pretty

aging terra cotta pots

There are some people who like things shiny and new.  They want to be the first person to own something.  They like the smell of a car with 32 miles on it.  They want their furniture to be delivered, tags still attached. I am just not one of those people. Unless we’re talking about electronics, mattresses or toilets, I want things in my home that have the patina that only comes with time. Or a bit of trickery. I have a few antique terra cotta pots and, while I’d love to fill my whole potting bench with them, that would get too expensive.  So, I have some new ones mixed in. Can you tell which one is the new one? Yeah.  It’s pretty clear and the new ones were bugging me a bit. While I had the Ironstone (white) MMS Milk Paint out to paint the sides of the potting bench, I decided

the antique, hodgepodge potting bench

Don’t you love it when projects come together perfectly? Such is the case with this hodgepodge of a potting bench. We just finished it today and it looks even better than I imagined.  It’s especially exciting, because we already had the workbench in the basement (it was free with the house) and I bought the chicken nesting box without a solid plan on turning it into the top-part of the hutch. This morning, Jeff bought about $40 of pressure treated wood for this project, a couple of 2 x 12’s and 2 x 4’s.   While he was out, I took care of the red overspray marks on the front of the work bench.  It wasn’t a big deal, but they just bugged me. So, I brought out my big-boy sander, the belt sander, and I went to town. I really love how the paint looks distressed, with some of the

how to make a chair cushion | deck chair makeover

I’ve been working on my deck off and on throughout the spring and summer and it’s finally starting to come together.  I know I’m not going to break any makeover speed records with this project, but that’s life, right?  Spaces take time to come together.  So, there is still more to do, but last week I jumped a big hurtle – I made new chair cushions for the vintage iron armchairs my mom passed along to me and I thought I would share a tutorial on how to make a chair cushion. They really, really needed new chair cushions.  The old ones were deteriorated, mildewed, faded and ripped.  They were beyond cleaning or recovering.  I needed to start from scratch. The chairs are comfortable and in great shape, though, so it was worth the time to make new cushions. I actually tried to find pre-made cushions that were the right size,

a vintage watering can & the little things

A while ago, I realized I needed a watering can, so I picked up a blue (of course blue) plastic watering can.  Of course, it worked just fine.  It waters plants just as it should.  But I realized that I find joys in the little details of my home.  I didn’t just want to use a watering can that would hold water, but one that makes me smile each time I use it. So, I looked around on Etsy and found an antique metal watering can… …with a screw-on “shower spout”… …and typography on the handle… It’s just a little thing that makes me happy. And, while we’re talking about gardening and finding joy in the little things… …there’s a praying mantis living in one of my plants.  He’s been there for at least a week and, I don’t know why, but it makes me happy that it’s a suitable
