finds for the chapel & save the date

Soooo, my next big event is less than a month away and I really need to get myself in gear to get ready for it! The event that is coming up is the Market on Chapel Hill, formerly known as the Chapel Market.  It’s held in the same place, Pike Road, Alabama, in the sweet little chapel on the hill at The Waters.  It’s on Saturday, October 3, 2015 starting at 9:00 am.  This is the third year of the market and it’s always such a wonderful time and well worth the drive for us.  Many of the old vendors will be there along with some more new ones this year.  I hope those who are in the area can make it! Now that I’m feeling a sense of urgency, I did go shopping yesterday to try to find some things for the sale.  I didn’t find a ton of

the antique, hodgepodge potting bench

Don’t you love it when projects come together perfectly? Such is the case with this hodgepodge of a potting bench. We just finished it today and it looks even better than I imagined.  It’s especially exciting, because we already had the workbench in the basement (it was free with the house) and I bought the chicken nesting box without a solid plan on turning it into the top-part of the hutch. This morning, Jeff bought about $40 of pressure treated wood for this project, a couple of 2 x 12’s and 2 x 4’s.   While he was out, I took care of the red overspray marks on the front of the work bench.  It wasn’t a big deal, but they just bugged me. So, I brought out my big-boy sander, the belt sander, and I went to town. I really love how the paint looks distressed, with some of the

the transferware jackpot

I know this is going to be an incredible shock to some of you, but I love ironstone and blue transferware.  I would say it’s out of hand, but I do sell far more than I keep, so it’s not totally out of hand.  You can tell the minute you step in my house, though, that it’s a soft spot. So, when Kriste told me she spotted a bunch of blue & white transferware pitchers she thought I would like at a local antique shop, my ears perked up.  She pulled up a picture she snapped of them on her phone.  I knew immediately from the shape and faded blue pattern that they were old and the kind I specifically hunt for.   “How much were they?” “Oh, I don’t know.  About $10-15/each, I think.” I just about fell off my chair. “You bought them all, didn’t you?!?“ Kriste looked

tips on finding the “rare finds”

We’re been spending a few days at Myrtle Beach and it’s been such a fun time.  My boys are really taking to the water, sand and surf.  They want to spend every minute at the beach or the pool.  It’s been a delight watching the discovery and excitement. I really enjoy the beach, but only aspects of it.  I’ve never liked salt water and sand.  From the time I was little, I preferred sitting in a 5 gallon bucket filled with hose water over swimming in the ocean.  Seriously.  The entire ocean was yards away and I would sit in a bucket (with my night-night blanket, sucking my thumb.) I do love the sound of the waves, walking in the surf and combing the beach for treasures, though. The pickings are pretty slim at Myrtle Beach, at least where we are.  It’s a popular beach and it has a pretty rough surf,

antique blue & white pedal car

I’m not into cars at all.  I drive an old van with over 230,000 miles on it and I’m content.  I know exactly how many pieces of furniture I can wedge into it.   But, if money weren’t an object, and I wanted to spend it on a car that was purely for fun, I would totally get an antique car, probably from the 1940s.  I love the rounded fenders and classic lines and I would enjoy cruising around in one immensely.  I doubt I’m ever going to have an antique car, but I got the next closest thing – an antique blue and white pedal car. Was this little guy made for me or what?!  A blue and white antique toy pedal car.  Come on, people.  It even has an “M” on the hubcaps! I’ve always liked antique pedal cars, but they are usually pretty pricey, even in this

knack-tastic

I’ve made some really special friends through my blog and one of them is Barb Blair of Knack Studios.  A few years ago, I received a call on my business line.  “Hello?” On the other end was a sweet southern voice that said something like (I’m paraphrasing, here), “My name is Barb Blair and I feel like we should be friends.”  It probably should’ve been a strange call for both of us, but it wasn’t at all.  We hopped right in, like we’ve always been friends. Since then, we’ve talked furniture, blogging, business, brushes, paint, balance, family, photography, book deals…everything.  She’s a kindred spirit and someone I respect like mad. We’ve met a few times in person, but I’ve never been able to visit her on her turf, so Kriste and I stopped by her shop/studio on the way home from Atlanta this week. Her space is a total departure from

a vintage watering can & the little things

A while ago, I realized I needed a watering can, so I picked up a blue (of course blue) plastic watering can.  Of course, it worked just fine.  It waters plants just as it should.  But I realized that I find joys in the little details of my home.  I didn’t just want to use a watering can that would hold water, but one that makes me smile each time I use it. So, I looked around on Etsy and found an antique metal watering can… …with a screw-on “shower spout”… …and typography on the handle… It’s just a little thing that makes me happy. And, while we’re talking about gardening and finding joy in the little things… …there’s a praying mantis living in one of my plants.  He’s been there for at least a week and, I don’t know why, but it makes me happy that it’s a suitable

vintage-style barstools

I can’t believe that I’ve had new barstools for months and haven’t shared the details until today!  I used to document every tiny change that happened in my house, but now that I work at the studio most of the time, my house is just my house, so I don’t take pictures as regularly as I used to.  So, finally…these are the new barstools… A few months after we moved into our house, my mom and I were out shopping and came across these barstools from Target… I painted them in MMS Milk Paint French Enamel finished with Antiquing Wax, but they were originally a mid-tone wood with a glossy finish.  They were on clearance and I liked the style, so we tracked down three of them at two different stores.  I’ve been very happy with them, but one broke a few months ago and, since I bought them on
