Bathroom Shutters

I’ll warn you upfront…  This is not a post filled with pretty pictures of a finished space.  This is a post about making a small change that improved the looks and function of the window coverings in our bathroom. Here is how it looked when we first moved in… We have this awesome soaking tub, which I use almost every day.  I love baths and this one is big and deep and has jets, so it’s a winner in my book.  The only source of natural light is from the large window over the tub.  Aesthetically, it looks nice, but it’s a bit of a challenge when it comes to practicality and function. Obviously, privacy is the number one issue and this window faces the street.  Second, because the tub is so wide, you have to actually climb in it to be able to pull the cord on the blinds

picture frame molding in the 1/2 bath

While my mom was here and the mitre saw was out, we decided to install the chair rail and picture frame molding in the half bathroom.  This is a small room with 9′ ceilings and I thought this trim work would be a nice way to break up those tall walls a bit.  (You can find a tutorial on how to install picture frame molding HERE.) Here is a look at the same view before we started the foyer/half bath makeover… This room still isn’t finished, but it’s really coming along and the trim made a big difference in adding some architectural interest to the room.   The walls are still feeling a little…meh.  I think this room needs some pattern on the wall, so I’m thinking about hand painting a design or using one of the wallpapers I am planning to make for Spoonflower. We will also add some crown

foyer & half bath updates

I think foyer makeovers are underrated.  It’s a space that’s often neglected or at the bottom of the to-do list because it’s just a passthrough.  You simply walk through it to get to a room where you actually spend your time.  The thing about a foyer, though, is it’s the first thing you see when you walk in your front door.  It’s the first thing guests see.  In our house, since it connects the dining room, home office, half bath, living room, upstairs, and basement, we walk through it multiple times each day. Before this makeover started, there wasn’t anything offensive or bad or dated or ugly about the space, but it didn’t flow with all of the other changes we have made in the adjoining rooms.  In that way, it felt disjointed and overlooked. The soft blue/gray on the wall, bright white trim, painted doors, and that beautiful slate

adding storage to a tiny bathroom

Remember the upstairs bathroom that I worked on last year?  It is just the sweetest bathroom and I smile every time I walk past it…even with toothpaste globbed in the sink and splattered on the mirror. The only downside is that it is really tiny and doesn’t have any storage.  None at all.  Not a cabinet or shelf or hooks or anything.  And, with a pedestal sink, there aren’t many places to set your stuff. So, I added a glass shelf to the right of the sink.  We set a few extra rolls of toilet paper up there and it gives a place for guests to set their toiletries.  (The boys don’t have anything beyond a toothbrush, so I have an antique alarm clock and little boxwood topiary up there for now.) I would’ve preferred no shelf at all, I think, but a glass one allows the paper to still

evolution of my home | part 7 | the three bathrooms

And now it’s time for part seven of the history-of-my-home tour when we look at all three bathrooms in my house. Let’s start with the upstairs bathroom… This is the bathroom that’s next to the boys’ room and guest room and it’s in the original 1940’s part of our home.  It is teeny-tiny by todays standards.  I think there’s no more than about 6″ between the toilet and the tub and you can easily reach the paper on the opposite wall from the potty.  The wide angle lens I’m using makes it look a little bigger than it is. When we moved in, we painted the walls in a pale aqua, Jeff built the shelf for storage and I made a shower curtain out of remnant fabric and then another one for an HGTV.com project.  Other than that, we left it alone.  There just wasn’t much I could do to change this

latest HGTV.com tutorials…

I’ve been cramming a lot of work into just a few weeks and I’ve only shared a part of it here on the blog.  It’s just the way deadlines, events, trips and things in my schedule stacked up, but I have one more big thing to get through and then my schedule opens up a bit.  Of course, I’m already planning to schedule more workshops and there are a few new projects I’d like to get off the ground, but I feel like I can go at my own pace.  How busy I am will be self-imposed! So, today I thought I would share a preview of some of the other things I’ve been working on as I was getting ready for Lucketts.  It was Christmas in the studio as Kriste and I worked on projects for HGTV.com‘s Christmas in July series… And Jeff and I wrote a tutorial on how to make

a quilt, a step stool & a trip

We had a beautiful sunny weekend that was warm with a cool breeze and it put me in the mood to freshen up a few things around the house.  (I would’ve loved to go on a hike or have a picnic at a playground, but the Parsons’ boys were all sick, so my “playtime” had to be around the house.)  Anyway, I don’t really decorate for the seasons, but I do like changing around accessories and decor to suit the seasons. I was cleaning up the guest room and putting fresh sheets on the bed and decided to add an antique wedding ring quilt.  (The quilt belonged to my husband’s grandmother.)  The pretty pastel colors in the compliment what’s going on the room and add a “springy” feel. The layered quilts were looking a little flat, so I folded a feather decker (duvet) under the gold quilt to give it

upstairs bath progress

I finished the wall paper mural in the upstairs bath last week and I’ve been bursting to take a picture of it to share!  I’ve just been really busy and didn’t have the chance until yesterday afternoon.  The bathroom still isn’t done, but it’s far enough along that you can get the idea. This bathroom is teeny tiny, so I decided to take some risks.  HGTV asked if I would write a tutorial on hanging wall paper in a bathroom, so that’s where the design started – the hunt for wall paper.  I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I wanted it to have a vintage feel and make a statement in the small space.  I started looking at mostly peel-n-stick wallpaper, so it would be easy to apply and easy to remove and I found a few options I liked in sort of a Swedish folk-art vein.  The
