epic craig's list find

I have found a lot of great pieces on Craig’s List over the years…chandeliers, dressers, hutches, cupboards, chairs, sofas…you name it.  I’ve bought a lot off of Craig’s List.  When I’m getting ready for a market, I troll the local antiques & furniture sections daily in our local areas to see if I come up with anything good (and I often do.)  And I have another ace up my sleeve when it comes to shopping CL…my dad.  He has a truck, likes to drive and likes to meet new people, so he’s in charge of coordinating the details of the pick up and then he delivers it to me.  It saves me a lot of time and he enjoys helping out. So, I was browsing through Craig’s List a few days ago and came across a listing for a French armoire.  I have been looking for one for my bedroom

an adventure in new york

I received one of those e-mails last week.  The kind that seems sort of crazy and surreal.  It was from Pinterest and they were asking if I would be interested in traveling to NYC to be interviewed for a Fox News extra on upcycling.  It seemed a little far-fetched and I wasn’t sure if it would actually work out, but just a few days later, I was driving up to New Jersey to take a train into Manhattan. Kriste and David escorted me there, which was fortunate, since I proved to be a bit of a mess when it came to public transportation.  I was always putting my ticket in upside down or backwards or swiping it twice, so that I had to pay again to get back.  I somehow even messed up exiting the parking lot at the train station, even though I did everything right.  They had to

Chapel Market 2014

Last year was the very first Chapel Market in Pike Road, Alabama.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it last year, because of the distance I would need to travel from PA and I had never even thought about hauling my furniture and antiques that far.  After mulling it over with Jeff, we decided it just sounded like a fun thing to be a part of and we went for it.  It was a huge success in every way, so it was a no-brainer that we would come back this year.  And we did.  Last Wednesday, we packed up our van and little open trailer with everything from the “green zone” in the studio and left at 4:00 am the next day for Alabama. Last year, our booth was swarmed, so this year we brought help.  Kriste and her husband David followed us in their car and we

Fall

autumn table & more glittered pumpkins

A couple of weeks ago, I showed a more traditional, spooky black & orange fall table with black glass glitter on pumpkins, crows, pinecones and a paper bat bunting.  In this setting, I wanted to show glittered pumpkins in a totally different way, so Kriste & I set up a rustic autumn table with a little glam element in the form of gold (14 Karat) and silver (Tiara) glass glittered pumpkins. Kriste took the lead on glittering these pumpkins and opted to glitter the stems and a “starburst” sort of pattern on the top of each pumpkin.  I think they turned out beautifully.  (The glitter is adhered with Elmer’s school glue.) We used live pumpkins, but this would be perfect for artificial pumpkins as well…probably even better since they can be used year after year.  We also decided to try one with a mix of 14 Karat & Tiara glitter, which looked lovely.

black glittered pumpkins & more

Today in the studio, Kriste and I worked creating two very different Halloween/fall tables.  In the one I’m showing today, we went with a black/orange/spooky classic Halloween theme.  Neither of us are big on decorating for Halloween, but this was so much fun to put together and we both love how it turned out. We featured Flapper Black MMS GGG (Miss Mustard Seed’s German Glass Glitter) on several simple projects on this table.  We glittered live and wooden pumpkins (found at Target), some clearance plastic crows, pine cones and paper bats that we made into bunting.  We made them with the same glue & glitter technique most people learn in elementary school. Pick something to glitter… …have some glitter at the ready and work over some paper or a container, so the glitter can be reused. Brush on a white all-purpose school glue… …and immediately sprinkle the glitter on. Allow

walls, apron hooks & a new lens

Jeff and my dad have been working for the past week or so on the rolling walls for the studio and they are turning out so well!  I wanted rolling walls for two reasons…  First of all, the studio is a big, open space and I wanted to be able to divide the space and have a “back room” for shipping, storage, office space, etc.  Second, I wanted to have walls I could use for photo backdrops, so I can experiment with different treatments, trim and colors.  The guys built three walls for me.  My dad hung drywall on one side of each of them and then Jeff did a couple different wood & trim treatments on the other side of two walls.  I’m still thinking about what I want on the other side of the third wall, but I have plenty to work with now! Here’s one of the

white bunting, the "green zone" & the prop shelf

Kriste and I have finally gotten through enough of the not-fun part of settling into a space and we’re now at the really fun stage of starting to put on the finishing touches and we can think through the details of the space.  Something we’ve been wanting to do since day one is hang the white bunting I had in my tents at the Lucketts Spring Market.  I felt like that would hide the ceiling even more (or distract from it at least) while still keeping the space light and bright.  They would also add a touch of fun.  I want this to be a fun, inspiring, creative space. Now that the internet has been installed and the wiring has been run for the chandeliers, I felt like we could hang the bunting and the guys working in the space wouldn’t be rolling their eyes at the flags hanging in their faces!  We

process of styling

I’ve been asked to share my thought process for styling a photo shoot, specifically with a piece of furniture, and this post is in response to those requests.  I think styling is something that is hard to teach, because it is an art in itself and is based so much on personal taste.  As I walk you through my thought process on styling this piece, you might like one of my “rejects” better than the one I liked and that’s okay.  I’m hoping that through sharing my thought process, it can help you think through your own process, so when you’re styling shots you can be more intentional with your choices. The first thing I learned is that I am much happier with my shots when I take my time.  This means putting the camera on the tripod and connecting it to my computer.  This is known as shooting “tethered”.
