whitewashing a tabletop

I was going to think about THIS TABLE a bit more before I painted it, but I really could only imagine it one way, so I decided to go with that.  Also, I had a new friend and local blog reader, Kellie, coming over to hang out and help me paint while our boys played together.  It seemed like the perfect time for whitewashing this tabletop. And, even better, she had never tried MMS Milk Paint before, so I was able to teach her all about it as we worked on my kitchen table. When I stripped and sanded the top, I learned that the top wasn’t solid wood, as I thought.  It’s a very thin veneer that is chipped, patched, and worn away in some places.  I don’t mind imperfections, but I felt like whitewashing this tabletop would camouflage these as well as any future scratches and dings that

Furniture Feature Friday | no. 1

Welcome to our first Furniture Feature Friday 2.0, number 1!  Yay!  I can’t tell you how glad I am that I brought this back in a new format. I found so much inspiration and new furniture-loving-friends to follow.  I know a few of you were bummed that Furniture Feature Friday is taking place on Instagram, but it’s really much easier than requiring someone to have a blog to enter.  Getting an Instagram account is free and very simple! If you don’t have an Instagram account, you can still browse through this week’s entries from your computer, tablet, or mobile device by following THIS LINK. Now, for favorites… I couldn’t even begin to pick and showcase all of my favorites, because there were so many.  Seriously.  There were awesome antiques, makeovers, upholstered pieces, recent finds, and on and on and so many were soooooo good. So, I just picked a few

the “factory table” update

Since I’ve had a few people ask, I thought I would give an update on the “factory table” I purchased off of craigslist and stripped down several weeks ago.   Well, I had plans to paint and finish it right away, but with cold weather looming, I felt it was more urgent to paint the kitchen cabinets.  I needed to be able to spray the doors outside, whereas the table can be painted inside in any sort of weather. I was also able to just throw a tablecloth over it and out of sight out of mind.  Right? It is still unfinished under there, though, so it’s on my to-do list. A small part of my procrastination, other than working on other things, is that I’m not 100% sure how I want to bring the furniture, fabrics, and everything together in this room.  It really needs some fabric and so much

Painting the Daybed & Furniture Feature Friday!

Before I share the progress on the daybed, remember Furniture Feature Friday?  Someone mentioned it to me in a comment a couple of days ago and it sparked an idea.  Why not bring it back, but host it on Instagram by using the hashtag #FurnitureFeatureFriday ?  It’s much simpler than the old school link parties and it’ll be a fun way to see and showcase the work and finds of others. Here’s how it will work… This will take place on Instagram, so you do have to have a public Instagram account to play along.  Just share a piece of furniture and use the hashtag, so myself and others can find it.  It doesn’t have to be painted furniture, but can be a favorite find, a new arrangement, a makeover, whatever.  As long as furniture is included. And I’ll pick and feature my favorites on my Instagram account and here

adding shelves to an antique wardrobe

Remember this antique pine wardrobe I bought off of craigslist a couple of weeks ago? One of the last projects my brother was able to complete before flying home to Oregon was installing shelves inside.  And one of the last things my mom and I got done before my parents drove back to PA was to unpack my fabric and fill those shelves.   There is something about stacks of beautiful fabric, specifically antique linen, that make me giddy.  I mean, seriously.  I open these wardrobe doors and a rush of excitement bubbles up and I can’t help but release it in a giggle. This wardrobe only had a rod and a small shelf up high.  That would’ve been okay if I wanted to hang clothes inside, but I wanted shelving for fabric and notions.  Since the wardrobe is a beautiful antique, I also wanted to add shelves in a

Before and Afters

painting the living room built-ins

I knew it was going to happen.  Jeff knew it was going to happen.  YOU knew it was going to happen… And, it happened. Yep, buckets and buckets of paint happened in this room. So, let’s back up and chat about how I got from point A to point B. First, I painted the walls in Benajmin Moore’s Wickham Gray.  Yes, poor Mr. Wickham, that rake, has a delicious color named after him.  In my Jane-Austen-loving-world, anyway.  I used Benjamin Moore’s Aura paint in Matte, which is pretty much the only thing I will use for walls.  The coverage is great, it’s durable, and the finish is beautiful. For the cabinetry, I wanted a bright white and went for a custom-mixed, slightly off-white.  It still reads as bright white, but it’s not quite as stark as bright white out of the can, if that makes sense.  I used Benjamin Moore’s

oak studio hutch

I have so much to share…  all of the work that was accomplished when my brother and parents were here, the goodies I found while shopping the Gold Rush Days in Oronoco and Rochester, a tour of the rest of the rooms in our house, tutorials & details, more of my plans, etc.  Lots to share.  But, today, I’m just going to share one piece. We’ll pace ourselves. (And, if you just can’t wait, check out my Instagram Stories.  I did learn that there is an extension for Google Chrome, so you can view them on your computer.  You can get it HERE.) Sooo…when I set out for the antique market this weekend (I’ll share more on Gold Rush in a later post), the piece that was at the top of my list to find was a storage piece for my studio.  I sold most of my counters and hutches

card room green front door

Well, it’s been a whirlwind few days!  My brother came into town to work on my new house along with my parents.  I love that my family is all about hard work and we can accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.  We’ve been working at such a rapid pace that I haven’t even had a chance to post about all of the projects, but once things quiet down, I will take pictures and share.  It’s exciting stuff, though, and the house is already looking more like our home. When I last shared the front door, it looked like this… It just needed some color.  After holding many paint chips up to the pinkish-beige siding, I settled on Card Room Green by Farrow & Ball…   …and I had it mixed by Benjamin Moore in Rust Scat Semi-gloss Enamel. My dad and I took the door off the
