a little “spring cleaning” for my indoor plants

Just a quick bit of business first…  We were having some technical glitches with the Personal Retreat Guide for Creatives yesterday, but it’s working now.  If you were having that trouble, you can click HERE, enter your e-mail, click subscribe, and then you’ll get an e-mail to download the guide.  Sorry about that! I noticed last week that some of my house plants were looking a little sad.  It wasn’t that they were unhealthy, but they needed to be cleaned up a little…trimmed, have the dead leaves shaken out, etc.  So, I took a little bit of time to give them a little “spring cleaning”. Both of my indoor gardenia plants were holding onto a bunch of dried out and dead leaves inside their living foliage, so I took each one of them out on the deck and pick them all out.  I was nervous they would look naked after

why there is a Christmas wreath on my door in April

I learned last spring that one can get away with having Christmas greenery and lights up on a porch until April in Minnesota. Since there is still snow on the ground, it just works and seems acceptable. (On Instagram, a reader and I dubbed the snow pattern on this door “snowmbre”.  Get it?  Snow…ombre?  Moving on.) But, the live greenery was starting to look sad just before Junk Bonanza, so I took a bit of time to take it down. Just before I did that, though, Jeff pointed out that there was a bird’s nest in the wreath.  I hadn’t noticed it, because it’s built in the top, left, inside corner of the wreath.  It’s really nestled in there and you can’t see it when you’re looking head-on at the door.  He told me we needed to remove the nest, so we don’t have birds pooping all over the door

mid-summer garden update

It’s been a few weeks since our front garden overhaul, so I thought I would give an update!  First of all, everything has been a success so far.  Everything is growing well and I’m enjoying checking on all of my flowers and bushes in the evenings to water, deadhead the petunias, pull weeds (although there aren’t many popping up), etc. Here is how the garden looked back in early April… And how it looks now… I can even see how much our grass has improved.  It took a beating this winter from Sebastian’s pee and sidewalk salt to melt the ice.  Jeff’s really been working on it this spring and summer (thatching, aerating, spreading weed & seed and lawn fertilizer, etc).  It’s nice to see his hard work paying off. I found the Annabelle Hydrangeas late in the season, so they were on sale and I was able to buy

cherry picking

I hope you had a lovely fourth of July!  We invited some friends over from our church and then watched fireworks from a vantage point near our house.  It was low key, but everything July 4th should be…burgers, corn on the cob, macaroni salad, sparklers, and friends. Other than that, I’ve been doing some projects around the house, like finishing the front garden, helping Jeff with organizing the garage (he’s building shelves and then I organize), trying to fix/install a new doorbell (which has been more challenging than one would have thought), making multiple trips to Home Depot for materials and supplies, and working on an unexpected, totally not-fun project that popped up on July 3. If you follow me on Instagram Stories, you know I had a funky smell in my van and came to learn it was emanating from a dead mouse.  I know!  I absolutely could not

front garden reveal

Other than letting everything grow, the front garden is all finished!  Well, for now.  I am still a novice gardener, but one thing I have learned is that gardens are dynamic and they are never done.  All of the plants are in the ground, though, and I love how much curb appeal it’s added to the house. The yard and landscaping were some of the last things we worked on at our last house, so we didn’t really have a chance to finish it or enjoy seeing many of the plants mature.  With this house, I wanted to start planting, so I could have hedges of boxwood and hydrangeas, a flower garden, herbs and vegetables, and all of that fun stuff.  It is going to take a few years to get it all done, but we’ll work on it bit by bit each spring and fall until it’s done. We

concrete urn, cast iron cow & cherry trees

It has been a lot of hard work, but all of the planting in the front garden is done! The garden was stripped down to bare dirt early last week and I then worked on improving the soil to help all of the plants grow stronger and healthier.  Jeff and I broke up the soil with a couple of spades and then I raked and hoed in some manure, humus, and garden soil.  It was tough work and I’m pretty sure I got manure on my face in the process.  Let’s just say that I made many visits to the utility sink while working and took a thorough bath that night! I worked on the planting over two days.  Digging for the bushes took a lot more time than I imagined, since I had to dig the holes much larger than the root ball.  The annuals along the sidewalk a

plan for the front garden

If you missed my garden post last week, you might want to take a minute to check it out.  The comment section is full of great advice, tips, and suggestions that are especially applicable and helpful if you live in zone 4.  Also, this post is a continuation of that one, so it might be helpful for context. To get this post started, I thought I would share the gardens that inspired me.  I love the look of the gardens designed and shared by Loi Thai of Tone on Tone.    His gardens are simple and beautiful, structured, traditional, and approached almost as interior rooms with focal points, layers, textures, and a clearly established color palette. Here are a couple examples… Now, I do realize my limitations.  I’m in a suburban home and some of these looks just might not work or make sense, but the overall approach can certainly apply.  If

clean slate in the garden

I was really getting the gardening itch in late May, but with all of the traveling we had coming up, it just didn’t make sense to buy a bunch of plants and start a project we couldn’t finish before we left.  So, I had to practice patience! Now that we’re home, we’re diving into some projects, including the front garden.  Monday of this week, we had some guys from our church’s youth group come out to help us dig up plants and bushes and move the rock out of the beds.  They were offering themselves for hire as a way to raise money for their upcoming service trip, so it was a win-win. The work was hard and, because of the rain the night before, it was muddy! Jeff and I worked along side them, so we could get as much done as possible. The boys even chipped in and
