peonies

Well, we’re finally home for the summer.  We got all of our trips done back to back and I won’t have to pack a suitcase again until I go to France and Italy in the fall.  It’s so good to be home, although I loved visiting family and then unplugging (quite literally) with our church’s pastors and their families at a private island on Rainy Lake in Canada.  I’ll share more about that trip in another post, but I thought I would first share a nice surprise I found when I got home… The hedge of peonies planted by the previous homeowners (five bushes in all), had blossomed.  The bushes were dotted with fluffy pink flowers. Knowing that peonies are short-lived, I helped myself to a few of them for a bouquet. I even painted them for my oil still life series, but peonies have me beat for right now.

faux boxwood topiaries

I have been a fan of topiaries for years and am always drawn to buy them, even when history tells me I won’t be able to keep them alive for more than a few months.  In our new house, my studio is a sunroom, so it is a sanctuary for plants during the winter and I’m having more success with plants than I ever had before.  The light in the studio couldn’t save these topiaries I bought last summer when we first moved in, though.  I didn’t bring them in before the first frost and they were toast.  Even if I had brought them in before the frost, I couldn’t handle the smell!  They stunk up the studio and I was almost glad the frost got them, so I had a good excuse to pitch them. Over the winter, I put a pair potted of evergreens next to the door

better than black friday

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by and contains affiliate links. Happy Way Day! I bet you didn’t know today was a holiday!  Well, it’s the newly proclaimed “Way Day” by Wayfair.  What that means for you is savings better than Black Friday and free shipping on everything from an online resource that has everything under the sun for the home.  Decor, furniture, rugs, wall art, appliances, indoor, outdoor, you name it.  Chairs to chicken coops.  Planters to playgrounds. And EVERYTHING ships for free.  Even the chicken coops. I like to buy a lot of my home furnishings second-hand, since I love antiques, but (and their brands like Birch Lane and Joss & Main), have been my favorite resource for natural jute rugs, lamps, and things that need to be sturdy and functional, like dining chairs. Since spring had finally arrived in Minnesota, I’ve got gardening on the brain, so I’m

training rosemary topiaries & other garden things

We almost broke into the 60’s in Minnesota last weekend, so I had gardening on the brain.  We’re still waiting for all of the snow to melt and the ground to thaw, but the warmth and sunshine gave me the itch to get my hands dirty.  It’s going to be a while before I can start on the yard, so I decided to repot some of my houseplants that needed more elbow (root) room and give everything a haircut. First up were the rosemary plants that have been flanking my kitchen sink for a few months.  I’ve never had much luck keeping rosemary alive for very long, but plants love all of the rooms on the back side of our house, which faces south.  We get beautiful light all day long, so they can grow and stay healthy. They were both looking like they needed more soil and I have

farmhouse holiday series | fall porch

It’s time for our last fall post in the Farmhouse Holiday Series – the fall porch, but we’ll be back again as the Christmas season gets underway!  I have to say that I really worked at gardening and our outdoor spaces last year.  I found it rewarding and we enjoyed sitting on our deck for the first time in the almost 10 years we’ve lived here. This year?  Totally different story.  It was hot and dry and I was really busy and our outdoor space was neglected.  I would get about a D+ if I was being graded.  And the + is only because I had some beautiful crabgrass that thrived on just the right combination of drought and neglect. Anyway, cooler temperatures sweeping into our county have coaxed me back outdoors to spruce up the space, so we could enjoy some al fresco meals and observe soccer practice in the

a harvest of lavender

A few years ago, I planted some lavender on either side of the steps leading to the front door of our house.  It was sort of a whim, but I love how it’s grown over the years and the scent and color it adds to the entrance.  I’m a homebody, anyway, so I love walking up those steps to the front door, but the lavender is an extra perk. It was getting a bit unruly this year, though, and I was encouraged to cut it back by people who know a lot more about gardening than I do.  I sort of hated to cut it, but I was told it’s best for the plant and prevents them from becoming woody. So, I went out in the cooler temperatures of the evening, armed with an antique apple basket and new pair of shears, to trim back the lavender. I didn’t realize how much

gardening season two begins…

Just an FYI that the first Lucketts Leftover online sale will start tomorrow (Thursday, June 2, at 9:00 pm EST.)  You can click over to my online shop HERE. Our house has a ways to go before it looks really charming from the curb.  It has a 1940’s sweetness about it and the landscaping is getting there, but we’ve put much more time and attention to the inside of the house and it’s only been in the past couple of years that we have started really working on some projects outside. But, it’s all coming along. Now that Lucketts is over, I hit a local nursery to get some flowers for the window boxes and spent some time sprucing things up. See the dead weeds in the window boxes?  Yeah, nice.  The topiaries, Eugenia, flanking the front door are leftovers from Lucketts.  I shopped my own sale! The holly bushes

tiny topiaries & “just our stuff”

Last year was a big year for me.  I finally decided to give gardening and indoor plants a real effort.  I was actually going to water, tend, prune, weed, and fertilize.  Guess what happened?  I didn’t kill everything! I only killed some things, but I learned a lot along the way. I was not excited about warmer temperatures, because the A/C is broken in my van, but I was looking forward to the greenhouses being full again!  When my mom and I were antique shopping on Friday, we popped into a couple of local nurseries.  I was looking specifically for topiaries, but only found a half-blackened rosemary topiary.  I did find some little plants that could be trimmed up and made into topiaries, so I thought I would give that a try. I trimmed them up and tied them with cotton string to some little sticks I found in the
