some things just don’t need a makeover…

As I shared a few days ago, I have been on a roll with finding French chairs.  Just last week, I found a pair of French wing backs, a pair of Bergeres, a pair of balloon backs and two single French-style chairs, including this pretty one… When I first saw it on Craig’s list, in a poorly lit, slightly blurry picture, I assumed it would need to be reupholstered.  When it saw it in person, I changed my mind.  It needs to be cleaned up a little, but the fabric is charming.  I wish I could find this fabric pattern, in fact.  So, the chair is staying as is.  Interestingly enough, I found this exact chair last year, but it was upholstered in tapestry.  I reupholstered it with an old grain sack… I pondered the new chair for a while and decided I would try it out in my guest room before

a sled, ski poles & French wing chairs

The snow is melting and spring is in sight.  That is spurring me on to make lists, attack my “to-do” stash at the studio and get things done.  Between freelance articles, things to do for the Milk Paint line, getting ready for Lucketts and an upcoming magazine shoot, I have plenty to work on! After an intense day of planning and making lists, I needed to get out, so yesterday, Kriste and I set out to do some shopping for supplies.  We also hoped to find some things to add to the Lucketts pile.  It was one of those days where it felt like people who like the same things I do picked over the space before I got there.  I found some things, but not the haul I was hoping for.  We’re going to scout out some new places in the hopes of finding some great things.  Lucketts is two

boy’s room | monogram pillows & accessories

I shared a few days ago that one of my goals is to start taking on design clients.  That’s a pretty scary step for me, though, and I still have to think through how I’m going to work in that capacity.  I’m not scared of designing a space, that’s the appealing part.  I’m also not scared about working with people, different tastes, personalities and budgets.  It makes me nervous, because I’m used to just letting a room develop over time.  I’m used to trial and error, rotating things in and out until I hit that sweet spot.  That’s what I’ve been doing in my whole house and, most recently, in boys’ room. A few months ago, I painted the walls in Hale Navy.  I’ve been painting so many walls white and soft blue and pale gray that I was ready for some bold color and the boys’ room is a

ironstone cake pedestal

If you’re an ironstone collector, then you know that cake pedestals are like the Holy Grail of ironstone.  Well, maybe not the Holy Grail, but they are rare and expensive when they do surface.  I snagged one with my pooled birthday money last year and I’m so glad I did.  It really is one of my favorite things. So, my jaw dropped and I got all giddy when I spotted another one in an antique mall a couple of weeks ago.  It’s obviously not as high and it’s has a blue & white transferware pattern, but it is heavy and old and still an ironstone cake pedestal. And it was a steal…$25, which is crazy, given that these sell for $300 or so on eBay. This piece has a pretty sizable chip on it, but that doesn’t bother me at all. The hallmark is one of the loveliest I’ve ever seen…

decorating with shutters & doors

I’ve shared my love of doors and shutters here before, but it’s been a while.  I think it’s an idea that used to be a little odd, but it has been catching on and snowballing over the past few years.  The unfortunate thing about that is that demand and price for them has increased, but the good thing is that more doors and shutters are being saved from tear-downs.  I happen to live in an area where I can still find them at a good price.  I have often found salvaged pieces at yard sales for practically nothing.  We once brought home a truck-load of doors for $5.00! Even when they do get a bit more expensive, I still think they are a good bargain.  Here’s why…  they cover a large area of blank wall and make a big impact. They also add architectural interest to a room that may

wheels, racquets & more…

I had sort of a quiet day, so I thought I would share a few more of my finds from last week as well as some things happening in my house. I’ve had a thing for bread boards for a while now and this one was just too pretty to pass up.  The patina on the wood, the shape and the way the planks are connected made this piece a keeper.  You’ll definitely see it in some photo shoots before I sell it. I also bought some industrial-style antique wheels for an upcoming project. They need a good cleaning with a wire brush and some Hemp Oil to rehydrate the metal and they’ll be good to go. I was also looking for some things to use as accessories for the boy’s room.  I have a vintage sports thing going on in the room, so this wire bucket of old baseballs was

a horn, a glass case, french twins & a sofa

As I mentioned on Friday, I was feeling a little directionless on Thursday.  I have plenty of things on my to-do list, but I couldn’t pin myself down.  I needed some time away from the computer, the studio and the house.  I lounged around a bit in the morning before I acknowledged I would benefit from an outing. I didn’t have a ton of time, so I stuck with a couple of shops that are close to home.  Here are some things I bought… I have a little bit of a thing for phonographs and practically ran for this horn when I saw it. I have no idea what I’m going to do with it, but certain things speak to me and I just know I should get them.  This one spoke loud and clear. I also couldn’t pass up this antique glass display case.  Again, no clue what I’m going to

more furniture to paint…

I have had a tough time getting back in my groove since the Christmas holiday.  It’s mostly because of this… No, not an amazing old mill.  The snow!  The boys keep having two hour delays and full days off from school for snow and ice.  I love my days off with them, but it’s tough trying to balance work with two boys home all day, especially on the heels of a long school break!  We’re managing, though.  There’s lots of Lego-building, movies, games, “guy battles”, snacks and lunches and I’m sneaking work in when I can.  I did get a few days in at the studio last week and I enjoyed them so much after my time away…    One of the top things on my to-do list is to finish introducing the European color line for MMSMP before they are released (Jan 24, 2015), so I’ve been stocking up on
