"I knew you were here"

It finally occurred to me on Monday that Christmas was right around the corner.  You’d think with all of the decorating and Christmas music that it would’ve occurred to me sooner, but it still managed to sneak up on me.  I had only purchased a few presents and it was time to get with the program.  I spent Wednesday out and about and was able to check almost everyone off my list.  With a little extra time on my hands, I decided to pop into one of my local antique malls.  I wasn’t there for a big shopping trip…just to poke around a bit and buy a few things that piqued my interest. I started making a pile of some things…a small basket, a couple of ironstone plates, a blue and white cup, a chippy white architectural piece and a nubby linen sheet.  I was just about finished when I heard

good reads

I really enjoy reading.  I don’t read novels very often, because I get so engrossed in them that I neglect everything else and stay up until 3:00 in the morning to get to a “good stopping point.”  So, I usually refrain unless I can’t resist or I’m stuck in bed for some reason.  But I enjoy flipping through a good decorating book or reading something that’s inspirational and maybe helps me learning something new about myself. I’m sure some of you would enjoy the books I’ve been reading, so I thought I would share some of them… Creatively Christmas This book is special, because it was written by my friend, Jen Rizzo.   That is how it ended up in my hands, but what I love about it is that it is such a real, approachable book.  It shares lots of simple ideas and very doable (and budget-friendly, kid-friendly) projects.  The grain

recent finds & photo shoots

When we were in Charlottesville last week, Jeff extended the invitation to me to do a little antique shopping.  He knows this means I will most likely fill our van with a bunch of things he doesn’t really “get.”  It means I’ll buy things that I expect him to fix and it even may mean he gets longing looks from me over a beastly piece of furniture that I want to rearrange everything in our van for.  He knows all of this and still encouraged me to stop at a couple of antique malls.  It hasn’t always been this way.  I swear he used to distract me by pointing out a field of cows and would accelerate as we drove by a sign for an antique mall.  He has finally learned that milling around 25,000 square feet of musty, old stuff is my idea of a very fun afternoon and he

epic craig's list find

I have found a lot of great pieces on Craig’s List over the years…chandeliers, dressers, hutches, cupboards, chairs, sofas…you name it.  I’ve bought a lot off of Craig’s List.  When I’m getting ready for a market, I troll the local antiques & furniture sections daily in our local areas to see if I come up with anything good (and I often do.)  And I have another ace up my sleeve when it comes to shopping CL…my dad.  He has a truck, likes to drive and likes to meet new people, so he’s in charge of coordinating the details of the pick up and then he delivers it to me.  It saves me a lot of time and he enjoys helping out. So, I was browsing through Craig’s List a few days ago and came across a listing for a French armoire.  I have been looking for one for my bedroom

workbench & walls

When I attend antique markets as a vendor, I try to keep blinders on for the most part, so I don’t end up bringing home a van load of stuff!  I think Jeff would be less than pleased if I did that!  When I find I’m getting sidetracked, I try to remind myself that I’m there to sell, not to shop, but sometimes there is a special piece that just cannot be ignored!  Last year, I bought a chippy white dental cabinet that was perfect for an awkward spot in my living room.  This year, I wasn’t looking for anything specific, but I let Jeff know I might buy something if it really speaks to me, but I wasn’t going to search for it. I was one of the first vendors set up at The Chapel Market last weekend and one of my old blog friends (also a vendor), Linda from Coastal Charm, came

get your beautyrest

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, there’s been a lot of shuffling going on in the guest room.  I hand painted a bed in a Bavarian style and started decorating the entire room around it.  Then, after I had it for only a few months, I sold it. Now, I like change and I’m fickle when it comes to decorating, but I’m not quite that fickle.  I really loved this bed and it was hard to sell it, but there was a good reason… I had the opportunity to partner with Beautyrest and get a luxurious, queen-sized mattress for our guest room – a Beautyrest Black mattress.  I selected the Kate model. Our guests have been sleeping on a low-end full sized mattress for about 12 years.  We’ve padded it with memory foam and did everything we could do to disguise the cheap quality, but there wasn’t anything we could do to

transferware, a ring mold & more

We are back safe & sound from The Chapel Market, which is quite an accomplishment given our high-mileage van.  It’s very reliable, but it might’ve decided at 202,000 miles as it’s hauling a very heavy trailer, that we’ve asked too much of it.  It didn’t, though, and brought us there and back home again with a sigh of relief.  We’ve already decided that the time is near when we need to get a truck and an enclosed trailer to make these trips.  We currently do two shows a year (Lucketts Spring Market and The Chapel Market), but we would like to add in one more, I think. I’ll share pictures from this weekend as well as a recap of the day…what sold, what didn’t and what I bought.  In a nutshell, it was a great event and we’re already looking forward to next year. I spent most of the day hunkered

bunny pull-toy

I know…again with the kid’s stuff, but this bunny pull-toy was just too cute to pass up!  I got it at a good price, because it didn’t have its original paint and, unfortunately, someone who wasn’t very artistically inclined tried to paint a face and spots on him.  The eyes were big and black with Raggedy Anne styled lashes.  It was just a little overdone and took away from the beautiful shape and legs of the piece.  I can’t fault someone for trying, though! I decided to give the bunny a softer, less Tammy Faye Bakker look.  I painted the body in MMSMP Ironstone.  It took two coats to get nice coverage.  Then, I used Shutter Gray to paint the spots, ears and very simple oval eyes.  I left the cream paint on the wheels, because they had a pretty patina and I thought complimented the lighter shade of white
