gingerbread house recipe & templates

A few years ago, I got it in my head that I had admired gingerbread houses long enough and I was going to make them myself.  Not just the graham cracker/milk carton/kit variety, but ones that I made from scratch and decorated with traditional white royal icing.  I played hooky from working in the studio and we spent the day baking and decorating cookies and houses.  This is the gingerbread recipe I use along with the templates I found and the ones I created. It’s now a tradition and a staple of my holiday decorating. When I share pictures, I’m often asked to share my recipe as well as templates, so here they are! Not wanting to reinvent the wheel, I just found and followed this gingerbread and icing recipe from The Food Network.  It’s been the recipe I’ve made three years in a row and it always turns out well.

October Favorites

October has been a great month.  I feel like we’re finally getting into a rhythm with our schedule and a lot of great memories have been made.  The boys had their first sleep over, I had lunch/coffee with several new friends, our church small group started meeting at our house, and we had our first snowfall and turned on the fireplaces. Calvin also had his first appointment at the Mayo Clinic (he’s a Type 1 Diabetic) and I am still getting used to the idea that we live less than 4 miles from one of the best hospitals in the world, including a top-notch Pediatric Endocrinology department. We’ve been enjoying watching the leaves change, the cooler temperatures, soup on the stove, and watching football.  The month was closed out with having friends over for take-and-bake pizza followed by walking around the neighborhood, tagging along behind the kids as they trick-or-treated.

Linenbees Giveaway

A few months ago, I was browsing around on Etsy and found a simple linen dress that looked comfy, but stylish.  I ordered two.  They are now a wardrobe staple for me and I’ve added more linen dresses to the mix. I also started working with that Etsy shop, as a blog sponsor. The shop is run by a mother-daughter team in Latvia and each garment is tailor-made for the buyer.  I love pulling something out of the package, knowing it will fit me perfectly. One of my favorites right now is this simple black .  I paired it with some leggings and an 1800’s petticoat (isn’t that lace to-die-for?)  The boots are from and the necklace is Lucy’s Inspired. A bit Little House on the Prairie?  Maybe.  But I feel good in it, so I’m okay if some people think it’s eccentric.  I am “artsy” after all and you can

September Favorites

I started doing “favorites” posts each month at the beginning of this year and that lasted for…oh, about two months!  Life just happened and I didn’t come back to it, but I decided to pick it up again.  Here are a smattering of things I enjoyed in September… Hamilton : An American Musical As a total drama nerd with a degree in musical theatre, I just love it when I find a new-to-me musical to overplay when I’m alone.  Well, I finally listened to Hamilton after it came up in a few separate conversations and I absolutely love it.  It’s not a conventional musical, but has a lot of rap and R&B mixed with melodies that have a familiar musical feel. The story is powerful, the music is great.  I love it and I’m wearing it out on my iPod while I work. 100 meadows project  Who knew that plowing

Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

A fall dessert using a fall favorite comes to life in this cookie. I don’t often think about cooking with pumpkin, but there is a lot of goodness pumpkins can bring to the culinary table!  I was in the mood for something chocolatey and cookies are always a winner at my house, so I made a variation of a Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe I found on Taste of Home.  I made a few tweaks to the recipe, like adding salt, using old fashioned oats instead of quick-cooking, and used dark chocolate chips. I like the old fashioned oats vs. the quick-cooking, because they retain more of their texture once the cookie is baked. One tip when making cookies is to use a cookie scoop or a tablespoon to dole out the cookies on the baking sheet, so they are uniform.  If the cookies are all different sizes, you’ll

Old World Kitchen Dreamware Giveaway

If you’ve followed me for a while, you may have picked up that I have a thing for kitchenware.  I was a Food Network junkie when I left the corporate world, so I could support Jeff in full-time youth ministry and be a homemaker.  I thoroughly relished the time and spent much of it cooking and baking from scratch and, as a part of that, building my collection of kitchen gear.  I built up a pretty well-equipped kitchen with great knives, utensils, pots & pans, cutting boards, etc., but I still keep an eye out for special pieces I can add or tools I can upgrade. Some of my favorite pieces of kitchen gear over the past couple of years have been wooden spoons and spatulas.  I love the warm patina they develop over time.  The more they are used, the better the look, in my opinion. Through Instagram, I

the coexistence of projects & dinner

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Blue Apron.  As always, all words and opinions shared here are honest and my own. Would you believe that I made a dinner like this… …when this kind of thing was going on in my house? Well, I did! I had an ambitious to-do wish list while my parents and brother were here to help get us settled in our new house and, as a grazer, I would’ve been content to plow through and pick at cherries and cheese and crackers, but I needed to make sure I had at least one proper meal each day for everyone!  I am not new to meal kit services, like Blue Apron, and one of the things I love most about the concept is that I don’t have to think about what to make for dinner.  It’s already decided and I have the exact ingredients gathered together

settling in

The past couple of days have been a whirlwind.  We’ve been bringing stuff in from the trucks, cleaning, unpacking boxes, making daily runs to Home Depot, and getting to know the neighbors.  We’ve fallen into bed exhausted each night and creaked out of bed each morning, but multiple times a day, we press the pause button on the crazy and marvel about where we are.  Not just where we are physically, although that’s still a little surreal, but where we are in the journey of this life.  It’s a sweet place and I’m trying to soak it in. On the first day of unloading the truck, we found the box with the painting of Eulalie in it.  I was anxious about how she traveled, so we unpacked the box on the spot.  The painting was in perfect condition.  I carried it right away and leaned it on the mantle in
