My House

All Things Home

keeping history

I have had a bin of family pictures, a box of matts and glass, a stash of frames and a mat cutter hanging out in my to-do pile for years.  YEARS!  And that is not an exaggeration.  It really is ridiculous.  Since I’m working on the finishing touches on my house, it is time to do some framing. I have had dreams of creating a gallery wall in our stairway since the day we moved in.  Now that things are freshly painted, I’m ready to create the gallery wall.  (I think just on the wall to the right, so it’s not too overwhelming for the narrow space.) That project starts with the pictures. I get emotional going through old pictures.  I’m not sentimental about very many things, but pictures and handwritten letters, get me choked up.  I think it’s because I know what happens to old, nameless pictures.  They end up in

checkered rug

I’ve shared before that rugs are my nemesis, but I feel like I’m finally getting a handle on what I like and what works with everything else happening in my space.  I had a plain jute rug under the table in the family room (off the kitchen), but we rolled it up and put it in the basement when we set up the Christmas tree.  It was fraying and the color just looked a little bland, so I didn’t put it back.  As we’ve been living without a rug for a while, I came to the conclusion that it would be much better with one. But which rug?  hmmm… So, I’ve just been waiting until the right option comes around.  I often troll Joss & Main to see if anything jumps out at me and a few days ago, something did. It’s a jute rug, so it works with the

hanging plates & swapping chairs

Today, I was supposed to be taking out the toilet in the upstairs bathroom with my dad in order to get things ready for the floor to be tiled.  Well, if you’re in the northeast, you know that it’s been brutally cold and there was some snow to boot, so the tiling had to be delayed until the temperature at least flirting with going above freezing. So, the toilet stayed put and I needed to shift gears.  I decided to do some picking up and cleaning, which always gets the creative juices flowing.  It usually ends up with me shuffling furniture around, deep cleaning nooks and crannies and getting things done that have been neglected. …and that’s just what happened today. I’ve been wanting to hang something over Jeff’s dresser in our room for months, but I’ve been so undecided about it.  I’ve had things propped up there only to take them down.

Bathrooms

the upstairs bathroom…

Before we step into the tiny upstairs 1940’s bathroom, I thought I would answer a question that several readers asked –  Why haven’t you painted the doors in your house?   When we first moved in, all of the trim and doors in the house were glossy, orange pine.  It was too dark and too much for me, so I mustered up the courage and painted it all white. It made a huge difference and I’m so glad I went through applying a coat of primer and ultimately three coats of paint to all of that trim! I have painted all of the walls, ceiling, trim, radiators and even cabinets, but I stopped short at the doors.  I have learned that un-painting something is much harder than painting it and I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to paint the doors, so I didn’t.  I still love that I left them alone

Before and Afters

paint brush on a stick

I was all set to meet Kriste at the studio this morning, but as I was getting up and about for the day, I realized I really wanted to paint my walls and trim and get the tedious painting project that’s been hanging over my head for years, finished.  When the mood strikes to do something like that, you do it.  So I did. I shared last week about some of the painting on my to-do list… Yesterday, I painted the walls (Gray Owl) and the trim (bright white out of the can) in the hallway through the arch.  It just looks fresher and brighter than it did with the off-white trim and creamy-beige walls. Here the hallway is from the bathroom view before it was painted… …and after. The stairway was the same color and really dingy and scuffed.  You can see I have touched it up over the

upcoming home projects

I sparked quite a conversation about the exterior of my house yesterday!  I’ll circle back about that later and share more of my plans for it.  Today, we’re back to the inside. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know we’ve done a lot to our home.  Every room has been painted at least once.  We’ve overhauled the kitchen, the half bath, the master bath.  We’ve made improvements to the basement and all of the bedrooms.  There really isn’t a lot left to do on the inside and, as much as I enjoy all of the DIYing, I’m really happy to be at the stage when I can focus on some of the small, neglected areas and the unfinished details.  I tend to look at the big picture of the space and have a hard time buttoning down and finishing the little, mundane projects. The first on the
