installing a stair runner

I shared several weeks ago that I wanted to add a carpet runner to our steps.  We have 1940’s stairs that are shallow, by today’s standards, and entirely wood.  That combination has led to more than one topple down the steps by pretty much everyone in our family.  Adding a runner wouldn’t help with how shallow the steps are, but it will at least cushion any future falls.  It also makes the pokey stairwell look more like an intentionally decorated space. I started with three Stockholm Dash & Albert 2.5 x 8 woven cotton runners.  They have so many beautiful patterns to choose from, but the colors in this design worked best in my space. I received the runners a while ago, but wanted to wait until the upstairs bathroom tile was completed before I installed them.  The weather was not being very wet-tile-saw-friendly, so the tile had to wait.

upstairs bath progress

I finished the wall paper mural in the upstairs bath last week and I’ve been bursting to take a picture of it to share!  I’ve just been really busy and didn’t have the chance until yesterday afternoon.  The bathroom still isn’t done, but it’s far enough along that you can get the idea. This bathroom is teeny tiny, so I decided to take some risks.  HGTV asked if I would write a tutorial on hanging wall paper in a bathroom, so that’s where the design started – the hunt for wall paper.  I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I wanted it to have a vintage feel and make a statement in the small space.  I started looking at mostly peel-n-stick wallpaper, so it would be easy to apply and easy to remove and I found a few options I liked in sort of a Swedish folk-art vein.  The

some things just don’t need a makeover…

As I shared a few days ago, I have been on a roll with finding French chairs.  Just last week, I found a pair of French wing backs, a pair of Bergeres, a pair of balloon backs and two single French-style chairs, including this pretty one… When I first saw it on Craig’s list, in a poorly lit, slightly blurry picture, I assumed it would need to be reupholstered.  When it saw it in person, I changed my mind.  It needs to be cleaned up a little, but the fabric is charming.  I wish I could find this fabric pattern, in fact.  So, the chair is staying as is.  Interestingly enough, I found this exact chair last year, but it was upholstered in tapestry.  I reupholstered it with an old grain sack… I pondered the new chair for a while and decided I would try it out in my guest room before

design ramblings | selecting creamy white paint

In this week’s Design Ramblings, Kriste and I answered another e-mail from one of our fans, Laura.  She asked how to select the perfect paint color, specifically a creamy white.   Here’s what we had to say on that subject… A few of you suggested showing our bloopers at the end of each video, so we did that in this one.  It is fun to share those candid moments and I feel like you can get a better sense of our personalities. So, I looked up the price of Super Paint after the video and realized I was way off!  It’s about $50/gallon now when it’s not on sale.  I was quoted the price from about 10 years ago, I think.  Sorry about that!  Anyway, I still think quality paint is really worth it.  I usually buy the $80/gallon stuff, because I’ve become a bit of a snob about paint in

boy’s room | monogram pillows & accessories

I shared a few days ago that one of my goals is to start taking on design clients.  That’s a pretty scary step for me, though, and I still have to think through how I’m going to work in that capacity.  I’m not scared of designing a space, that’s the appealing part.  I’m also not scared about working with people, different tastes, personalities and budgets.  It makes me nervous, because I’m used to just letting a room develop over time.  I’m used to trial and error, rotating things in and out until I hit that sweet spot.  That’s what I’ve been doing in my whole house and, most recently, in boys’ room. A few months ago, I painted the walls in Hale Navy.  I’ve been painting so many walls white and soft blue and pale gray that I was ready for some bold color and the boys’ room is a

how to custom mat a photo | video tutorial

I’ve shared before that I grew up an Army brat.  Some kids really hate the instability of moving around, but I thrived on change and, despite crying when they were ripping up flower beds to work on WWII era pipes, I loved living on a military base.  We could walk everywhere and had so much freedom as kids.  There were also tons of programs to get involved in.  I did theatre, baton twirling, tap dancing, basketball, soccer, baseball, ballet, tin-punching, rafting, hiking, ice skating and was a part of a ski club…it was a really cool way to grow up.  My mom also got involved in the classes they offered for military wives.  One of those classes was learning how to frame and custom mat a photo. I remember my mom taking family pictures to the frame shop to work on and, eventually, we had a beautiful gallery wall.  So,

gallery wall in a stairwell

A couple of weeks ago, I started turning a stash of family photos, mat board and old frames into something I could actually hang on a wall. The wall in the stairwell, to be exact. And, last week, my mom came over and we “put the puzzle together.” We were dealing with a really odd space and a lot of mismatched frames, so we didn’t try to approach it with a goal of perfection and symmetry.  We wanted to create something that was pleasing to the eye, but looked collected over time.  We didn’t check the spacing with a ruler, but just put things where they looked good. We started with the long, narrow frames, then added in the larger ones, then filled the arrangement in with the smaller frames. And I love how it turned out.  I smile every time I walk up and down the steps.  I’ve even made

wood lovers, eat your hearts out

Thanks for all of the great comments on the family gallery I am working on and wrote about yesterday.  My mom and I worked on hanging the pictures tonight, so I’ll share photos of that soon. I also will write/film a tutorial on how I cut mats. Today, I have a treat for wood lovers.  I know some of you out there take issue with certain pieces I paint, but the thing is, I’m a wood lover, too!  I don’t buy a piece of furniture unless it’s solid wood.  I intentionally look for pieces that need some help…whether they have a damaged, hazy finish or chipped veneer.  I don’t always paint, though. I purchased this pretty side table off of Craig’s List for $35 a couple of years ago and have been meaning to fix it up.  The finish was flaking a bit and there were plenty of water rings.  I finally
