dog beds are decor

Before I get into the post today, I wanted to let my readers in the north east know that I’ll be in Palmyra, New York this Saturday (September 24, 2016) for The Purple Painted Lady 6th Annual Festival.  (Click the link for details.)  I’ll be teaching milk paint demos and answering Q&A’s at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.  I hope to see some of you there! I remember reading a post years ago, written by The Nester.  In it, she pointed out that all of the things in our home, in some way, are decor.  The stack of library books by the door, the mail on the kitchen counter…all of the stuff of life that we often look over, all contribute to or detract from the overall look of a room. That post made me think about all of the “stuff” in our house in a new way. The answer isn’t

farmhouse holiday series | fall dining room

It’s time for another installment of the Farmhouse Holiday Series with some of my blog buddies.  And this week, we partnered with All Modern to show you our dining rooms decorated for fall. I remember when I felt like “holiday” colors were locked in.  Christmas had to be green and red and fall had to be yellows, oranges, and browns.  That is it. And then I vividly remember seeing an article in a magazine, featuring a home decked out for Christmas in pale pink.  That article gave me the push I needed to drop traditional colors and decorate for seasons in colors that I love. So, my fall table is my favorite blue and white palette with some greens and a little bit of yellow mixed in.  It may not look like fall to some people, but it looks like fall to me!I started with a piece of checked fabric as

fall living room

You’re all amazing.  I just need to say that.  All of your comments in reply to my “things have changed” post were like a huge hug to me.  I know that sounds cheesy, but they really were.  What’s interesting is that after I posted that, it was such a relief to me and it pushed me through that “stuck” feeling I’ve been struggling through the past few weeks.  I took the pressure off of myself and creativity bloomed. Lesson learned. Well, for today, anyway!  I’m sure I’ll have to learn it again and again. So, with the creative spurt, I decided to do a little fall sprucing in the living room.  Fall decorating for me is just putting a few natural elements out, mixed in with things that are out every day.  I used to be someone who had four or five bins of decorations, but I realized it just wasn’t

farmhouse holiday series | fall family room

In this second installment of the farmhouse holiday series, we’re all sharing our fall family rooms… I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I don’t do much in the way of fall decorating. I’ll put out a couple of pumpkins, a bowl of apples, etc. and just leave it at that. In the case of my family room, I just put a mum in a bucket and added a couple of faux pumpkins in a wicker basket tray on the coffee table. It’s just enough to bring an essence of fall to the room without having to bring up bins of decor from the basement. I also put out a bowl of mixed nuts and a nutcracker I picked up on Etsy a couple of years ago.  My Oma always had mixed nuts on her coffee table and I like bringing them out for fall and winter

progress in Calvin’s room…

We made some real progress in Calvin’s room the past couple of weeks.  As a reminder, we’re transitioning our guest room into a room for our youngest son, Calvin.  He’s ready to have everything done right now, but I’ve been trying to teach him that good rooms aren’t rushed together.  It’s about collecting just the right items and that can take time. With the addition of a desk, bean bag chair, more masculine bed frame, some navy bedding, and a rug, it’s looking a lot more like a boy’s room, and a pretty cool one at that. One of my favorite pieces, though, is his new nightstand.  This room is really small and we needed a small nightstand to fit in the tight space.  I was using a stool when it was a guest room, but Calvin needed something a little more substantial. I happened to have a piece in

Before and Afters

master bedroom nightstands

I don’t show a ton of the goings-on in my house these days largely because there’s not a lot happening as far as home improvements or decorating changes are concerned.  We are transitioning the guest room to Calvin’s room, but other than that, things have pretty much stayed the same. We are changing a few things up, though, and I must say that it’s been refreshing for me.  I love making tweaks and changes to a space, even if it’s just for the sake of things looking a little different.  Spaces can start to feel stale when they are too stagnant, I think. For a while, I’ve been wanting to change out the nightstands in the master bedroom.  I’ve been on the hunt for two antique washstands or chests that were about the same size and shape.   It’s been tricky to find, but two pieces finally found their way to

The trials of decorating for an 8-year-old boy

Decorating for kids is hard.  I’m learning that as I’m working with my eight-year-old on transforming the guest room into his room.  We have conversations about it that go something like this… “So, let’s talk about your room, bud, and how you would like it to look.” “Okay.” “What colors would you like?” “Ummm… Red, green, black, gray, orange, blue.  And some yellow.” “Hmm.  Okay.  How about a theme?” “Oh!  Broncos and Star Wars and Ninja Turtles.” “Um.  Okay.  Which is your favorite?” “I want to paint the walls and have you paint a big Mikey over there and a light saber over there…” And it just deteriorated from there. Now, I’m all for letting him have a say in his room.  I want him to love it.  But, I also know that most eight year old boys lack a design sense or the concept that when they are twelve,

artwork for Calvin’s room

I remember a conversation I had with Jeanne Oliver a few years ago.  We were talking about art and the classes she offers through her website.  At the time, she was offering a painting class that was based on copying the work of masters.  I remember not knowing quite how to feel about that…a class that is encouraging a student of art to copy the work of someone else.  Isn’t that a no-no? Well, that conversation was such an encouragement to me.  Jeanne shared how copying can be a wonderful way to learn new techniques and explore your own style within the framework of someone else’s work.  Copying is a bad thing when you just rip someone off and don’t give them credit or when you’re delving into the world of copyright infringement, but when you’re using it as a learning tool, there is a lot of value in it.
