parsons chair slipcover tutorial | part 2

If you missed part one of this slipcover tutorial, you can find it HERE.  In part one, I show how to make the “body” of the slipcover.  This chair slipcover tutorial works for almost any armless chair, but is specifically for a parsons chair with small wings.  You can also find the link to the linen I used for this project in that post. So, in this post, I’m going to show how to make ties.  This tutorial can be used for pretty much any homemade ties.  They can be used on clothes, like aprons, accessories, slipcovers, etc.  I like ties for slipcovers because they add a “dressmaker detail.”  Since slipcovers are essentially dresses for furniture, it looks fitting to me.  If you want a more modern look and cleaner lines, you can always use buttons or even velcro. You can just cut the strips of fabric with scissors, but

Parsons Chair Slipcover Tutorial | Part 1

The chairs that end at the end of our kitchen table are “the favorite chairs” for everyone.  They are comfy and therefore, often occupied.  Instead of sitting in rockers in the basement or snuggled on the sofa, I’ll often find my boys sitting at either end of the table, watching a movie, or playing a game.  This is where they are sitting for school work these days and, of course, for snacks, meals, and games.  These chairs have gotten a workout! And they look great in photos if you don’t zoom in or look too carefully… The seats are a total disaster.  Most of the mess is due to adhesive from my T1D son’s pod/pump changes.  We used an adhesive remover wipe to remove one pod before putting on another and that has left a sticky residue on the seats.  And that sticky residue then attracts any dirt or fuzz

hanging a butcher’s rack over the stove

When I received another box of goodies from Maria of Dreamy Whites, one box contained a long metal rack with pointed hooks.  I wasn’t sure what it was, so I asked Maria and she told me it was a French butcher’s rack used when making sausages.  No matter what it was once used for, I could pretty quickly envision many different uses for it in our home. The most obvious one was hanging it above our stove.  It looked like it might be the perfect size and I have always wanted to hang something there.  It seemed like it needed something.  I’ve tried signs, ironstone platters, breadboards, a tole tray, and a large silver platter and none of them seemed to work right.  I had always wondered about the idea of hanging a small rack to hold a few small copper pots, but I wasn’t sure how I would mount

green, blue, & white Christmas table

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Walmart.  All words and opinions are, as always, my own. Do you remember my green & white tablescape for summer?  Well, I think it’s important for pieces I buy to be versatile, so I wanted to show how many of these same pieces bought from Walmart Home can transition and work just as well for a Christmas tablescape!  So, don’t just shop the Christmas section online or in the store.  Look all through home, crafts, kitchenware, etc.  Roam around and see what inspires you and make those low prices stretch even further. First of all, I added some that remind me of a Christmas sweater.  I ordered these pillows from the holiday section of Walmart.com and was so pleased with the size and quality for the $12 price (and it comes in a variety of colors!)  With a zipper closure and feather-filled insert, these

parsons chair slipcovers

The time has come to make some slipcovers for the parsons’ chairs at either end of our kitchen table.  Well, technically, they are sort of hybrid mini-wing/parsons’ chairs.  I lucked out when I bought them in that they were listed as a pair even though the price was just for one.  So, I got two for the price of one!  ( is the chair, but it’s out of stock and the price on the listing is double what I paid for two, but it might help you find something similar.) Anyway, I knew when I bought them that the light, linen-ish upholstery would be toast.  There was just no way with two pre-teen boys that they were going to stay pristine.  They are their favorite chairs, so they have taken a beating with drips and spills.  To make matters worse, my youngest son likes to have his insulin pods changed

cow/calf pair

A couple of weeks ago, I painted a cow-calf pair.  If you follow me on Instagram, you would’ve seen some of the process as well as the final painting shared on the grid.  For those who don’t follow me there, here is the underpainting… …and then the finished work… I didn’t have plans to keep it when I first started this one.  I’m pretty good at selling my works.  It’s partly a hobby, but painting was absorbed as a part of my business pretty early on, so I try not to get too attached.  I paint with the intention of selling.  But I was in love with this one as soon as I rolled my chair back and viewed the painting in its entirety.  I was so excited that I had an antique gilded frame that fit it, so I tried it on before the painting was even dry.  It

quartz counters one year later

Last May, we had Hanstone Quartz countertops (in the pattern Monterey) installed in our kitchen and I thought I would give an update now that we’ve been using them for over a year.  Of course, a review after 1o years or 20 years would hold more weight, but well…I don’t have a time machine, so you’re getting a one-year review! The original posts about these counters were a part of a sponsored collaboration with Hanstone, but this follow-up post is not. I will go ahead and destroy any suspense that may have existed and let you know that I love these counters and they were a great decision.  If you remember when I was in the process of selecting new counters, quartz felt like a bit of a compromise. I had my heart set on marble.  Or so I thought.  What I actually had my heart set on was the

annoying projects

While the boys are home and dedicated, quiet creative work time is limited (or non-existent), I am trying to knock out some projects that are quick and mindless and have been hanging around undone for months.  The projects that fit in that category are on my “annoying project list”.   Every once in a while I dedicate an entire day to annoying projects.  (You can read about my annoying project day in July HERE.)  That’s the only way I seem to be able to gear myself up to finish unglamourous and unexciting projects, so they aren’t hanging over my head any longer. Instead of merging them all into one day, I’m trying to knock out a few annoying projects over the course of spring break week. The one I worked on yesterday was touching up the paint on the butler’s pantry.  I installed a beadboard back last summer and once the
