Who (what) am I decorating for?

A few months ago, when I was picking something out for my bathroom, a thought occurred to me…. Why am I picking this?  Because I love it?  Because it’s best for my family?  Because it will photography well?  It’s more in line with what a magazine might want to feature?  Who or what am I decorating for?   Dangerous thoughts. The decorating choices I make have changed a lot since I started blogging and writing freelance articles and getting magazine features.  My style hasn’t changed…just evolved a bit.  I did have to face the truth, though, that I do look at everything now in terms of how it will photograph.  I find myself buying things just because they will look good in pictures.  Arranging furniture in ways that will look good for pictures.  Choosing materials and paint colors that will look good in pictures.  It’s happened so slowly that I’ve

Inspiration – Bavarian Gasthaus Bedroom

For those who don’t know, I grew up in Germany.  My dad was in the Army and was stationed over there during the glory years of my childhood.  The first two years were spent in Garmisch, in the Bavarian Alps. After that, we moved to Stuttgart, which wasn’t quite as picturesque, but we took plenty of trips around Germany, Austria and Switzerland, staying in quaint, family-run “Gasthaus”es.  It’s the equivalent to a bed & breakfast in the US.  Many of them were half-timber homes with shutters at the windows, large balconies with overflowing window boxes and small cafes set up outside for dining. I remember the pine beds, “feather deckers”, sheer, lacy curtains at the windows and Bavarian accents like Cuckoo Clocks and stag antlers. To me, this look feels like “home.”   I carried some of these elements into my own guestroom… These strong memories of my childhood were the

Chapel Market Recap

What an overwhelming trip to Alabama I just had!  (In a good way.) To set the stage a bit, I got a text a few months ago from Layla of The Lettered Cottage, asking if I’d be interested in coming to Alabama for a “little” antique market. Tempting…but it’s a long way.  860 miles to be exact.  I sort of tucked the idea on the shelf of things that I would like to do, but probably won’t out of practicality.  I knew the answer would be no, but I thought I would ask my husband, anyway.  So, I did.  And, after some discussion and weighing everything out, he said yes!  Really?!  I texted Layla right away to let her know we were in. Fast forward to last Thursday…our van and trailer were packed with furniture, lavender, boxwood wreaths, scales, typewriters, ironstone and all kinds of goodness.  We left at 4:00

Guide to Shopping The Chapel Market

Well, this is a guide to shopping my space specifically at the Chapel Market tomorrow.  First of all, here are some pictures of my space and the things that are for sale (and everything is for sale!)… I did not bring t-shirts, because I am almost sold out and need to reorder, but I did bring a bunch of books… …and I’d be happy to sign them for you.  Also feel free to bring a book you already have for me to sign. I brought samples of all of my milk paint colors, including the newest ones… …but the paint and companion products will be sold across the aisle at Perfectly Imperfect. So, here are some tips for shopping my space… Since the space is small, we don’t have any display pieces or a checkout, so you have to find me or my husband Jeff in order to pay.  We’ll

Furniture Wax vs. Hemp Oil

I have received a bunch of questions lately about Furniture Wax and Hemp Oil, the difference between the two and how I choose which one to use, so I thought it was time to write a post about it.  Let’s dive right in. Furniture Wax Why I started using it… I read an article about finishing painted furniture with wax a few years ago, so I went to the hardware store and bought a can of Johnson’s Paste Wax.  That was really the only wax I was familiar with, so I started using it on some of my painted and stained pieces.  I had a few problems with it.  It was very stinky and the consistency made it difficult to move well on a piece of furniture.  I also couldn’t get it into fine nooks and crannies of pieces.  So, I started looking for other types of wax and found

Sanding, staining, mixing & flooding

I had great plans for today.  I was going to get two furniture pieces finished and fit in e-mail and some photo shoots as paint dried.  The day was going as planned until about noon.  It’s been raining here for two full days.  Hard.  We’ve had a little bit of water seeping into our basement, just because the water table is so high.  This is normal, though, and the water is mostly corralled into channels with the help of some strategically placed towels.  I was busy oiling one of the shoe racks I bought and noticed some water seeping beyond the towels.  I figured they were sopped, so I exchanged them for dry towels and put them on the spin cycle in the washer.  The new towels were soaked in minutes and I realized there was a big problem.  I could hear water splashing.  It was pouring in under the

promises & the wedding

Soooo… I was at a wedding yesterday and then we drove home into the wee hours of the night.  I woke up this morning to check on my blog and I see that quite a conversation had been going on about bloggers (me specifically) and sponsored posts.  I have been sitting here for a while, trying to figure out if and how I was going to address it.  I think in this case, I just need to be a big girl and recognize that putting myself out there means that sometimes I’m going to receive some constructive criticism and that’s okay. So, instead of making a case for sponsored content, which many of you did already, I thought I would make promises to my readers about how I will approach sponsored posts. I know I have gained your trust as a blogger and I take that seriously.  I don’t ever
