makeover in a month | home office makeover reveal

The makeover in a month is finished and it’s time for me to share the full home office makeover reveal! A few weeks ago, when I was planning out the projects to work on with my parents, my office wasn’t officially on the list.  I had written “home office – stripes?”  I was considering something like painting tone-on-tone stripes on the walls.  I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew it needed just a little something more.  I rearranged and fluffed the office a bit a couple of months ago (all with things I had on hand) and liked the result, but I wanted to make the walls more interesting and customize the desk chair.  Wallpaper and inexpensive 2/3-height paneling did the trick! If you missed the first few posts about this home office makeover, you can find them here… Installing the paneling Slipcovering the desk chair

the painted bathroom shelf

Several weeks ago, I went antique shopping with my friend, Cheri, and I stopped at a local consignment shop on the way home.  I had found a few small things, but not any of the larger furniture pieces I was looking for in the antique shops we visited, so I was hoping I’d find one of those pieces at my favorite local consignment shop.  I didn’t have much luck finding a dresser or daybed (I later found both), but I did find a homemade secretary desk that I thought would make a perfect bathroom shelf.   It was a nice size, I loved the curved details, and it was inexpensive (around $30.) It also reminded me of something my Opa would’ve built.  He made a few small cabinets and shelves and this looks a lot like those.  There is a signature and date on the back, but I forgot to take

antique jenny lind daybed

I think I’ve mentioned it a time or two that I was looking for a bench, settee, sofa, or daybed to put under the window in our master bedroom.  The hunt has been a bit harder than I expected.  Once I compared the measurements of my space (as well as the door leading into the bedroom) to pieces I was finding on craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, I realized that I was looking for something very specific.   It would either take just the right amount of thrifting serendipity or a willingness to splurge on a new piece or an antique one that would have to be shipped.  I found some online that I loved, but they were way outside of the budget I set for this piece. I found a new one that was the right size and within the budget, but I was afraid I might regret not waiting for

preview of the half bathroom makeover

I worked on so many projects with my parents and have been so busy since they left that I haven’t had a chance to photograph all of it to share with you!  That’s just the season of life that we’re in right now, though.  I did take a few pictures of how the half bathroom makeover is shaping up, so I thought I would share them with you. This is how it looked early in 2019 when we painted the walls, had slate floors installed in the bathroom and foyer, and installed picture frame molding… | Montauk blue slate floors | It felt fresh and much more finished, but it wasn’t quite there, yet.  It needed something to add a little oomph and make it special. The wallpaper that my mom and I hung (you can read about that in THIS POST) was the perfect thing for this tiny room.

five things | the best decorating bargains in my house

I received a comment last week where a reader shared that she felt like she would never own things that were as beautiful as those that are in my house because her decorating budget was limited.  First of all, I wanted to reach through the computer and give her a hug.  I was thankful for her honesty and openness.  I was also thankful for the fact that I knew exactly how she felt.  I’ve shared many times over the years on this blog that I know how frustrating and discouraging it can be to have a non-existent budget to put towards your creative outlet and customizing your home.  I remember looking wistfully at decorating books and magazines, feeling more discouraged than inspired.  But even though I have a bigger budget now, I still love decorating bargains. Working as an antique’s dealer for almost 10 years and home blogger for over

antique-style mirrors for the master bedroom

It only took a couple of years, but I finally found a pair of antique-style mirrors that I love for the master bedroom!  I envisioned mirrors there since we got our king-sized bed, but I was really hoping to find a matching (or somewhat matching) pair of antique mirrors.  I’ve hunted all over the place…at antique stores, markets, online, and even when we were in Europe.  I found a lot of beautiful mirrors, but not ones that were the right size, shape, and finish.  It was also very difficult to find a pair and ones that weren’t really expensive. So, I watched and waited and I hung some things up temporarily and occasionally leaned mirrors up to get a visual. I actually found a pair of wood-framed mirrors (very similar in style to the one leaning on the dresser at ), but that was right when the stay-at-home order passed

antique finds with mom

I hope you had a great weekend!  Mine ended up being unusually busy as we’re getting the house put back together after all of the projects, working on finishing other projects, getting ready for back-to-school, and trying to get back into some sort of a routine.  As soon as the stay-at-home orders hit back in March, I was completely knocked off my usual routines and it has been a struggle to get them back.  I’m working on it, though…getting there.  I was really hoping to paint because I’ve been missing the easel and my palette, but I just ran out of time.  Let’s talk about some antique finds today… The Friday before my parents went back home to PA, my mom and I decided to hit a local antique store to see if we could find any of the items on my list.  We were lucky to trip across an

makeover in a month | blue and white wallpaper in the home office

Welcome to part three of the Makeover in a Month series with Leslie of My 100-Year-Old Home,   Melissa of The Inspired Room,  and KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms.  Just as it sounds, we’re each giving one room a makeover in a month!  I’ve been working on adding more layers and detail to my home office.  It hasn’t been a total overhaul, but building on what was already there to make it a bit more interesting.  I started by adding 2/3-height paneling and slipcovering my desk chair and now I’m hanging this charming blue and white wallpaper above the paneling. If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I had a bit of a decorating meltdown over this decision.  I wasn’t crying over a pint of ice cream or anything, but I became paralyzed when I second-guessed myself.  Should I paint the paneling a color?  Is white too boring and predictable?  Would the wallpaper be
