dining room mirror

Sometimes having a clear vision for how you want a space to look can be a hindrance when trying to finish a room.  It’s usually a good thing, because there is an actionable to-do list.  It can become an obstacle, though, when you know exactly what you want down to the shape, color, size, but you’re having trouble finding it! Such was the case with the mirror for the dining room.  I’ve been looking for one for a few months and have come up empty.  I have looked at local consignment shops, thrift stores, estate sales, and antique stores/malls.  I wasn’t hopeful, but I checked HomeGoods a few times on the off chance they would have one.  I’ve looked on craigslist here and in PA and NC (so I could pick it up when we visited family on the east coast).  I looked when mom and I hit some antique

butler’s pantry makeover | reveal

Thursday of last week was the last day the boys were in sports camp, so I had the house to myself to work uninterrupted.  The butler’s pantry was done and I allowed it to dry for a couple of days before loading it up.  “Playing” with all of the accessories was the best part.  Not only did I arrange and style, but I also cleaned out and organized the drawers and cabinets as well as the closed storage in the dining room and some in the kitchen.  Things were still pretty jumbled from when we moved it and it felt so good to get it all properly organized.  Even though I didn’t purge anything (I did that pretty extensively before our move), I ended up with lots of empty space just because it was all sorted and organized and random things were moved to a permanent “home” with other like

butler’s pantry makeover | part 1

This week, I finally tackled the butler’s pantry!  I don’t know what took me so long and it’s hard to believe it lasted as long as it did without being painted, but I do think my patience has improved with age and experience.  I also painted a lot of cabinetry when I first moved in and I needed time to think about this space and how exactly I wanted to finish it.  I finally could see it in my mind’s eye, so I bought the paint and materials and went for it. The main thing I wanted for the butler’s pantry (which sounds fancy, but it’s really just some cabinets between the kitchen eating area and the dining room) was to make it look like a piece of furniture, instead of just cabinets. I also wanted it to fit in better with my design aesthetic.  Painting it all white would’ve been

boxwood green kitchen island

When I initially painted the walls and island of my kitchen, I knew that I might change them once we had white countertops installed.  I didn’t know how long that would take, though, so I wanted to use colors that were neutral and worked with the dark granite.  If I had known we’d have our new Hanstone Quartz counters within a year, I might not have worried about my choices working with the granite, but I’m glad I worked with what was there at the time.  It gave me a kitchen that looked nice during the wait. When we got the new counters and backsplash installed, though, the warmth of the wall color became more obvious and the pale gray island was just reading as white.  It was all a little too one-note and, though it might not have looked like it to the casual observer, it didn’t look like

Butler’s Pantry Preview & Free Mrs. Meyers

As I shared yesterday, I’ve been working on the butler’s pantry this week and it’s coming right along.  I worked on priming and painting it today, but yesterday I took of the doors, removed the glass shelves, and installed bead board and corbels to customize it and make it look a bit more like a piece of furniture.  (The top was just dry-fitted when I took this picture, so that’s why it’s leaning in at the top.) Just adding the bead board and the corbels made such a difference.  I can’t wait to get it finished and put back it all back together again.  If you’re excited to see my progress, you can follow the makeover on my Instagram stories. I also wanted to share that Grove Collaborative is offering FREE Mrs. Meyers products to new customers who join their site. I have been a member for a couple of

the enameled kitchen sink

The boys are in a sports day camp this week and that means I actually have concentrated, uninterrupted time to work!  I know so many can relate to the challenges that come with trying to run a business from home while the kids are home all day.  I regularly feel torn between doing mom-stuff and doing work-stuff, so it’s nice to be able to focus on work when they are off having fun and then I can focus on them when they get home.  I am taking advantage of this time and already started working on the butler’s pantry, so that should be done later this week. Until then, I thought I would share more details on my new cast-iron sink.  We selected the by Kohler.  (As an FYI, this was a sink I purchased, not a part of a blog sponsorship or review.) As I shared in THIS POST,

repainting the primitive blue cabinet

The primitive blue hutch has been one of my favorite pieces of furniture for several years, but it is a little too primitive for my current home.  The shape is simple enough, so I think it has more to do with the color and distressed, worn paint.  I have been debating painting it for months and I finally did it! Here is how it looked originally… And how it looks now… I know the blue paint on the cabinet looks like it’s old, but it had been repainted before I acquired it (I could see the roller marks) and I repainted it when I brought it home (to tone down the blue a little bit.)  All of that to say I wouldn’t have painted it if the paint was original. The new coat of paint is Shutter Gray mixed with some Lucketts Green and Linen MMS Milk Paint.  It made

cherry picking

I hope you had a lovely fourth of July!  We invited some friends over from our church and then watched fireworks from a vantage point near our house.  It was low key, but everything July 4th should be…burgers, corn on the cob, macaroni salad, sparklers, and friends. Other than that, I’ve been doing some projects around the house, like finishing the front garden, helping Jeff with organizing the garage (he’s building shelves and then I organize), trying to fix/install a new doorbell (which has been more challenging than one would have thought), making multiple trips to Home Depot for materials and supplies, and working on an unexpected, totally not-fun project that popped up on July 3. If you follow me on Instagram Stories, you know I had a funky smell in my van and came to learn it was emanating from a dead mouse.  I know!  I absolutely could not
