studio guest chair & art sale

Thanks so much for all of the love on the guest room bed!  You collectively surprised me.  While I was working on some organizing this week, I decided to try scooting around some more furniture.  This checked chair, which I reupholstered a few years ago, was up in the sewing room and I decided to move it down to my studio to use a “guest chair”.  It’s always been one of my favorite pieces and it’s nice to have it where I’ll get to see it and appreciate it more. It’s small enough that it can just be tucked in along the wall, but it’s a fairly comfortable chair.  I also like the addition of a little pattern and the pop of blue. The boys and I had a good time over spring break, but not having my usual work hours was a bit of a struggle for me.  I’m behind on pretty much everything…e-mail, errands, projects.  And I really hate being behind.  But, I tried to relax and embrace the time with them, knowing that the years will fly and work can (usually) wait.  I do feel the crunch that is coming, though, to get in as much work as I can before school is out for the summer. studio closet progress

Remember the closet we were building in the studio?  (You can read about it HERE if you missed it.)  Well, we finally had some time to do a bit more work on it.  This is how it looked when you last saw it… The construction of it was very basic, but I didn’t care too much about making it fancy.  The interior would all be hidden away behind closed doors. Over the weekend, we took advantage of the warmer-ish weather and built the two doors for the larger opening.  I wanted to build them out of tongue and groove v-boards, so they would compliment the planked walls and ceiling. We put them together using 1 x 3 boards on the back side of each door.  In hindsight, we should’ve used a “Z” pattern to help reduce the risk of warping or bowing.  One of the doors is pretty warped, but

picture frame molding in the 1/2 bath

While my mom was here and the mitre saw was out, we decided to install the chair rail and picture frame molding in the half bathroom.  This is a small room with 9′ ceilings and I thought this trim work would be a nice way to break up those tall walls a bit.  (You can find a tutorial on how to install picture frame molding HERE.) Here is a look at the same view before we started the foyer/half bath makeover… This room still isn’t finished, but it’s really coming along and the trim made a big difference in adding some architectural interest to the room.   The walls are still feeling a little…meh.  I think this room needs some pattern on the wall, so I’m thinking about hand painting a design or using one of the wallpapers I am planning to make for Spoonflower. how to frame a baby dress

I’m still chipping away at the finishing details in the guest room.  One of the details that had me a little stuck was what to hang to balance out the mirror hung by the left side of the bed, but I finally have it figured out.  I’ll share my solution and also how to frame a baby dress… You can find the wallpaper  I used in this room HERE. wallpaper paste comparison

I know you’re just dying to know which type of wallpaper paste won out in my head-to-head challenge.  Was it Roman 880?  Was it Dynamite 780?  Oh, the suspense.  Oh, the drama.  This is the post you’ve been waiting for all your life. Okay, not really.  Wallpaper paste isn’t exciting, but I will tell you that you will appreciate this post if ever you’re installing unpasted wallpaper! guest room dresser & mirror

Last week, my mom and I needed a break from hanging wallpaper and installing box molding, so we went to an antique mall (Countryside Antique Mall) and to a local consignment shop (Kismet) to see if we could find a few things on my “wish list” for the room.  One thing that was at the top of the list was a dresser.  The bed was flanked with antique washstands from my last house, but they looked a little dinky in the room.  I wanted to replace one with a dresser and the other with a desk. I didn’t find the desk, but we found the dresser!
