a slice of life

Tuscany, Paris, & Junk Bonanza

I have a couple of very exciting trips and events coming up this year that I wanted to share, in case you’re able to join me.  The first one is a biggie. A few months ago, I received an e-mail from one of my MMS Milk Paint retailers, Dana, of Le Beau Chateau.  She is a seasoned world traveler and has taken and led many trips to Europe.  She pitched the idea of a creative retreat in one of her favorite places – Tuscany. I’ve had a few invitations like these over the years.  I would always get a quick rush as I allowed the idea to become a reality in my mind.  But the real world…small kids, a husband in school, etc. would pull me out of the daydream.  It just wasn’t the right time.  Maybe one day, it’ll be the right time. When this opportunity came, it was

craigslist confession

Sooooo….about that “no spend February”… I’ve actually been doing well with it and have said “no” or “later” to many things I wanted to buy in the moment. But, I made the mistake of browsing on craigslist.  Even as I was doing it, I knew it wasn’t smart.  But, we’re working on my office and I needed a storage piece.  I just couldn’t help myself!  Well, I could, but I didn’t. And, of course, I found something that was perfect.  So, the “no spend February” became a “low spend February.” What I found was an antique bookcase with original glass doors.  The size was right and it’s just the sort of thing I’ve been looking for.  I forwarded the link to Jeff and asked if we could go pick it up.  To his credit, he did not point out my no-spend pledge.  He said it was a great piece and

Found antique smalls

My mom and I hit one of my favorite local antique shops last week in hopes of finding a few furniture pieces for the rooms we were working on while she was visiting.  As I shared earlier this week, we found a new art cabinet for my studio, which was on the list… …but we also found a few smalls.  (“Smalls” are just little things, accessories, that you find at an antique/retail store.) One thing I miss about having my studio, selling online, getting ready for an antique fair, etc. is shopping for smalls.  I really don’t need much for my current house, since I already have years of collected smalls.  I could probably stand to sell some, even!  So, I try to stay focused and not buy things just because I like them.  I try to think of how I’ll use them to make sure it’s not another thing

the green art cabinet

Remember the art cabinet I bought and fixed up last year?  I really loved that cabinet, but I decided to part with it when it came time for us to move.  I was going to consolidate all of the pieces in my home as well as in my studio and we didn’t know what house we would be moving into, so it made sense to let go of as many of the large pieces as we were willing to sell. Now that I’m settled in my new (much, much smaller) studio, I am learning how I use the space and where I need to make some changes.  One of the main things I needed to change was where my easel was located in relation to my palette.  My palette has been on my left, which is a little inconvenient, given that I’m a righty. I was also finding I needed

blue & white finds

I will admit that I am basically a collector of blue and white things.  If I spot it in a store, I am drawn to it like a magnet. My mom and I went to Home Goods a couple of days ago and, front and center, there was a display featuring blue and white.  On the display was a pair of Ralph Lauren pillows in a blue and white check.  I impulsively went to grab them.  I hesitated.  First of all, I have enough pillows and most of them end up strewn all over the floor.  Second, I have enough blue and white check and this particular pattern didn’t match any of them.  So, I left them there for someone else to buy. I didn’t resist blue and white finds altogether, though! Before Thanksgiving, I spotted some pretty blue & white Johnson Bros plates, also at Home Goods.  I thought

antique pine chest

With the new bed and the new wall color, things in the master bedroom were falling into place nicely. I’ve been looking for a small dresser/chest of drawers to use as a night stand for Jeff’s side of the bed for a few months, though, and have come up empty.  The ones we used in our last house looked dinky and out of proportion in this new room. For my side, I used this marble-topped chest, which used to be next to our front door in PA.  The size, scale, and color are perfect, so I was looking for something similar to complete the pair. Well, when I was out shopping before Christmas, I found a lovely antique pine chest at a local antique store.  I had seen it on their Facebook page, but it was from a picture taken in the spring, so I doubted it would still be

my first MN antique haul

I have felt a little bit like I’ve been in a bubble since we moved here this summer.  I have the places I know and can get to without a GPS and then there is the rest of Minnesota.  When I lived in PA, I made a point to get out and about every couple of weeks.  It was important for creativity to step away from my computer, studio, and home for a while.  I’ve made little trips here and there, but there has been so much to keep me busy at home, that I haven’t done as much exploring as I would like.  So, that bubble is pretty small right now. I decided I really needed to get away from the house this week, so I checked out a local antique store and I am so glad I did.  Not only did I find some great stuff, but I

the inspired bell

I remember the very day I typed “home decor blog” in the search bar for the first time.  I didn’t know such a thing existed until a friend told me about them. That’s a thing?  I thought bloggers were all guys in their basements ranting about politics and sports!   Well, obviously, I figured out that wasn’t the case.  That first search was like inserting a key and opening a door to a world where my people were all hanging out together. Sarah was ripping the carpet off of her steps, Layla was renovating her small cottage in Alabama, The Nester was sharing about the desire to clean and organize that accompanies fall, and Melissa was sharing all of her decorating wisdom.  I was so inspired and immediately wanted to be a part of it.  So, I started a blog. Fast forward to now and, while many things have changed, I
