October Favorites

October has been a great month.  I feel like we’re finally getting into a rhythm with our schedule and a lot of great memories have been made.  The boys had their first sleep over, I had lunch/coffee with several new friends, our church small group started meeting at our house, and we had our first snowfall and turned on the fireplaces. Calvin also had his first appointment at the Mayo Clinic (he’s a Type 1 Diabetic) and I am still getting used to the idea that we live less than 4 miles from one of the best hospitals in the world, including a top-notch Pediatric Endocrinology department. We’ve been enjoying watching the leaves change, the cooler temperatures, soup on the stove, and watching football.  The month was closed out with having friends over for take-and-bake pizza followed by walking around the neighborhood, tagging along behind the kids as they trick-or-treated.

the oak buffet

When my in-laws were visiting, my mother-in-law and I checked out a local consignment shop and I found a piece of furniture that’s been on my wish list for a few weeks – a buffet.  I have been wanting one for my office, but have come up empty on craigslist and at Gold Rush Days.  The second I spotted this piece, I knew it was perfect… I like the style of it, the graining…and those legs!  I am totally a “leg girl” when it comes to furniture. I liked it so much, in fact, that I had to debate where to put it, because it would look great in at least three rooms.  It found a home in a office, for now. The room still needs to be painted, but I’ve been using that as an excuse to not hang pictures or get rooms organized.  The fact is that it’s

I always wanted a goat cart…

It started years ago when I was a newlywed, just getting into yard sales and antiques.  I was doing my usual Saturday morning thing – touring neighborhoods, looking for fluorescent poster board signs, open garages, and driveways lines with discounted treasures.  I followed signs into a cul de sac and my heart sped up.  In the driveway, I could see an antique wooden cart.  I barely put the car in park before my feet hit the pavement and I was running towards the cart. I frantically searched for a tag.   No price!  Does that mean it’s sold?  Or it was never for sale to begin with and someone was playing a cruel joke and taunting me with their antique European goat cart?   I took a breath and calmly inquired about the price of the cart.  It was for sale, but it was $250.  My heart sank.  I was

Old World Kitchen Dreamware Giveaway

If you’ve followed me for a while, you may have picked up that I have a thing for kitchenware.  I was a Food Network junkie when I left the corporate world, so I could support Jeff in full-time youth ministry and be a homemaker.  I thoroughly relished the time and spent much of it cooking and baking from scratch and, as a part of that, building my collection of kitchen gear.  I built up a pretty well-equipped kitchen with great knives, utensils, pots & pans, cutting boards, etc., but I still keep an eye out for special pieces I can add or tools I can upgrade. Some of my favorite pieces of kitchen gear over the past couple of years have been wooden spoons and spatulas.  I love the warm patina they develop over time.  The more they are used, the better the look, in my opinion. Through Instagram, I

adding shelves to an antique wardrobe

Remember this antique pine wardrobe I bought off of craigslist a couple of weeks ago? One of the last projects my brother was able to complete before flying home to Oregon was installing shelves inside.  And one of the last things my mom and I got done before my parents drove back to PA was to unpack my fabric and fill those shelves.   There is something about stacks of beautiful fabric, specifically antique linen, that make me giddy.  I mean, seriously.  I open these wardrobe doors and a rush of excitement bubbles up and I can’t help but release it in a giggle. This wardrobe only had a rod and a small shelf up high.  That would’ve been okay if I wanted to hang clothes inside, but I wanted shelving for fabric and notions.  Since the wardrobe is a beautiful antique, I also wanted to add shelves in a

studio transformation | part 2

I shared about priming and painting the studio walls and ceiling in PART ONE of the studio transformation and I shared about the oak hutch in yesterday’s post… Today, I am sharing my “working corner” of the studio… I purchased the drafting table off of craigslist in PA for $100 and it’s been a great work surface for art.  I clamped an old wooden lathe trip to it as a “shelf” to hold a palette, brushes, paper, etc.  The clamps are antique wooden canning clamps!  I picked them up any time I spotted them for sale, because they can be used for so many things! The drafting table does need to be refinished at some point.  I don’t ming it being splattered with paint and imperfect, but I don’t want a big water ring on it and it’s bringing a bit too much orange to the party for my taste.

oak studio hutch

I have so much to share…  all of the work that was accomplished when my brother and parents were here, the goodies I found while shopping the Gold Rush Days in Oronoco and Rochester, a tour of the rest of the rooms in our house, tutorials & details, more of my plans, etc.  Lots to share.  But, today, I’m just going to share one piece. We’ll pace ourselves. (And, if you just can’t wait, check out my Instagram Stories.  I did learn that there is an extension for Google Chrome, so you can view them on your computer.  You can get it HERE.) Sooo…when I set out for the antique market this weekend (I’ll share more on Gold Rush in a later post), the piece that was at the top of my list to find was a storage piece for my studio.  I sold most of my counters and hutches

craigslist wardrobe score

My parents are here!  They are visiting for two weeks to help with house projects and spend time with us.  We have walls to paint, chandeliers to hang, things to fix, and two birthdays to celebrate.  It’s going to be an exciting couple of weeks. Today, we had a big to-do list, but something came up that we just needed to squeeze into the day.  I had been trying to coordinate the pick-up of an antique pine wardrobe listed on craigslist for several days and it just hadn’t happened.  I finally heard back this morning and it was still available! I knew that an hour trip to pick up the wardrobe might just be asking too much.  Jeff agreed it was a great piece, though, and worth taking the time to get.  He took the van and my dad to pick it up while my mom and I knocked out
