Ironstone

ironstone heaven

During my 15+ year love affair with ironstone, I have come home with some pretty sweet ironstone hauls. Child’s play. Yesterday, I walked into ironstone heaven at a local thrift store.  One of my “picker” friends tipped me off on the treasure trove and I couldn’t resist making the drive to check it out. My friends, what you are looking at is stacks and stacks of Buffalo China from the 1960’s at a thrift store and the picture above only shows a fraction of it. So, a little lesson on Buffalo China.  It’s called that, because it was made in Buffalo, New York.  It’s marked on the bottom, usually with a green buffalo, and conveniently has the year it was made included in the hallmark, which is how I know these pieces are from the 1960’s.  Buffalo China is also called “restaurant ware”, because it was used primarily in diners, restaurants, etc.

5 tips for building a killer collection

Yesterday, I talked about paring down and today I’m talking about collecting!  Believe it or not, but the two can very much go hand in hand.  I believe editing is an important part of building a killer collection. As I was working on the process of purging, deciding what to keep and what to box up to sell, I realized that there has been some method behind building the ironstone collection I have today and I thought I would share it. Collection building tip no. 1 | Collect what you love This might be obvious, but if you’re someone who likes a lot of things, it’ll be hard to pin yourself down to focus on one main collection.  (Not that you have to, but having too many collections can get a little overwhelming!)  So, what gets you most excited?  What do you always gravitate towards?  What have you loved consistently enough over

what would fit in my carry on…

I already shared that I found several pieces in New Hampshire that I would’ve bought in a heartbeat if I had my van.  But, I didn’t. And, since my suitcase was already over 50 lbs, I could only buy things that would fit into my carry on bag. Of course, that included ironstone!  I feel like I can find ironstone anywhere I go.  This sweet old sugar jar was just $16.50.  I saw it and immediately plucked it off the shelf to pay for it.  I have loved ironstone for years, but I go through phases of what I look for and get excited about.  Right now, it’s really old pieces with fruit/nut handles on the lids.  This one has an apple… I also love the pattern on the base of the sugar jar.  I actually have the matching plates and handleless cups and they are some of my favorite. I

antique haul | 6.27.16

Last week, I acquired a few fun things.  One of my “pickers” brought me a load of ironstone (plus I brought in some pieces from my house) and I found some goodies at a local antique shop. Here’s a video showing everything… This is the small blue & white pitcher I mentioned in the video… Isn’t it so sweet? After studying it a bit, I thought it looked familiar.  I matched the hallmark on the bottom with some plates and bowls I have… …and they are a match! So, I’m keeping that piece!  I even found the matching sugar jar on Etsy and snapped it up. I also picked up a pretty stoneware bowl… …a boatload of bakelite flatware.. …a small, antique chandelier with all of the crystals… …a couple of shaving mirrors… …and a teeny, tiny dress form.  I named her Liz Marie, because, well, Liz Marie is teeny, tiny. It’s

ironstone, a tool tote, bottles & tags

After all of the craziness of Lucketts, I decided to take the week off.  I knew I probably would, so I cleared the calendar.  Sometimes I think I’ll want a break and then I don’t. I feel the momentum and I am raring to go.  This time I thought I would want a break and I was right.  I really needed it.  So, I had a “jammie day” and splurged on a massage and I even did a little antique shopping just for me. I thought I would share those finds as well a few things I picked up at Lucketts (when I was “walking around to warm my feet.”) One of those Lucketts purchases was this large ironstone footed bowl.  My mom and Kriste shook their heads when I pulled it out of the bag to show it to them.  Mom asked, “Don’t you already have one like that?”

the whole house makeover & painted ironstone

When I was out shopping a couple of weeks ago, I came across this sweet little birdhouse… I almost passed it up, because the colors were a little drab, but I decided to give it a chance.  I decided to paint it in MMS Milk Paint Grain Sack with Boxwood on the “grass”.  Kriste loves little projects like this, so I asked her to paint it while I was working on something else. For some contrast on the roof, I picked Trophy and decided to add little stick windows on the dormers to match the stick details around the door and lower windows.  We just collected some from outside and hot-glued them on. As a finishing touch, we beefed up the moss “bushes” with some reindeer moss hot-glued into place. It’s now such a sweet storybook cottage birdhouse. The little stick porch is my favorite part.   See?  A whole

ironstone brush boxes & grandma Shoemaker’s pitcher

It’s no secret that I love ironstone.  It’s my favorite thing to collect and I am totally honed in on it when I’m out shopping for antiques. I get excited at just about any piece of ironstone, but uncommon pieces especially get my heart pumping just a little faster.  Such is the case with brush boxes.  I own a couple and have sold a few, but they aren’t very easy to find and usually they are a bit pricey ($50-150). They are long, narrow boxes with lids that would have originally come in a “wash set” that contained a wash basin, pitcher, chamberpot, slop bucket, etc.  The brush box would hold toothbrushes and perhaps razors. I found the most amazing brush box when Kriste and I were out shopping earlier this week and the price was definitely right!  I think it was $18 or something crazy like that.  I spotted it and impulsively reached

more farmhouse finds

I know May is months away, but I have learned that I can be pickier if I shop well in advance of an event.  The Lucketts Spring Market in this case.  Pickier means better goodies and better prices for my customers. So, I set out on Thursday of last week to do some shopping and I found some really great things that fit with my “Farmhouse White” theme. This cupboard was an awesome find at a great price.  I am going to paint the interior and give the exterior a fresh coat of Grain Sack or Farmhouse White.  Perhaps a mix of the two.  I’m not sure about the interior yet, but it’s going to be painted.  Maybe a pop of color like French Enamel or something soft like Linen. I also found quite a few ironstone casseroles, tureens, pitchers and a stack of plates.  A couple of weeks ago, I bought
