gold rush purchases

Saturday was Jeff’s birthday and he went out for a special father-son breakfast for some time with our youngest before we spent time together as a family.  On their way home, he saw that there was an antique market happening at the Rochester Fair Grounds.  And, believe it or not, he called and told me about it (no. 1) and then (no. 2) he actually suggested we go there together as a family.  Now, Jeff has always been supportive of my antique habit (unless it involves moving something huge), but he’s not usually one to suggest going to an event, especially with the kids and especially on his birthday. After I checked to make sure he wasn’t joking or ill, I gave an enthusiastic yes. So, we all went to the antique market, which is a small offshoot of the Gold Rush Days that happens in Oronoco and Rochester in

Christmas Butler’s Pantry

I gave the butler’s pantry a makeover this summer, so this is the first time I get to decorate it for Christmas!  It’s a small thing, but I was excited about it none-the-less.  With that rich, green color, it’s just begging to be decorated for Christmas. And, I kept the Christmas decor very simple.  I just added some cinnamon sticks, nuts, pinecones, candles, and some faux greenery. The swag is hung from a 3m hook, so it can be removed after the holidays without leaving a mark. Now that the beadboard is contracting a bit from the change in humidity and temperature, I need to get in there and do a little touch up with the paint.  I’ll do that once the Christmas decorations come down. Well, tomorrow I am waking up at the crack of dawn to fly to Montana to tour the 2019 HGTV Dream Home!  I don’t

antique finds from cannon falls

I decided it was finally time to start exploring my local area a bit more in search of new-to-me antique honey holes.  I’ve been so busy with the house and the kids and just trying to establish a routine in our new city, that I haven’t been outside of the bubble of Rochester very many times.  I haven’t even done a lot of exploring within that bubble, but have stuck to a few places I know. I found myself missing my antique spots in PA and the days away from my workspace.  It’s nice to step away and get some inspirations, new ideas, and maybe a few new finds for my house. A couple of weeks ago, I went to Stewartville and found a couple of antique shops to mill around in.  I have a list of things I’m looking for, like a large gilded mirror for the dining room,

Junk Bonanza Buys

Oh man, oh man!  If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve spent the last day and a half at Junk Bonanza in Shakopee, MN and I am pooped!  It was so much fun, though, and such a great event.  I took lots of pictures and I’ll tell you all about it next week. Today, though, I’ll just share the things that I bought.  I couldn’t be around all of those amazing antiques and not buy anything! I know this will come as a huge shock to everyone who knows me even a little bit, but I bought some ironstone.  I found three pitchers, including this large one with a pretty handle and fluting… …and two milk pitchers.  Milk pitchers are one of my favorite things, so I pick them up if ever I find them at a good price.  The pitcher above was $65 and the milk pitchers

146 ironstone plates

So, I have a question that I’m going to ask on behalf of a dear friend of mine. She is about ready to move and…um…as I…I mean, she is packing, she realizes she has a large number of plates (and other dish ware.)  She decided to count said ironstone plates and learned she has 146. And that’s not even including the ones hanging on the walls.  And that’s only the dinner plates. Soooo, is that too many plates? Yeah, I agree.  It’s a completely reasonable amount and that’s what I told her. Okay, okay, IT’S ME! It didn’t seem like a lot of plates when they were just sitting in my cabinet, but when I faced packing them, it seemed a little crazy.  I mean, who needs that many plates in a normal household?  And who collects plates that don’t really serve a purpose except that the owner likes stacks of plates? I

english advertising containers…

Sometimes the best things happen through e-mail.  I have “found” some of my best sources just because someone reached out to me.  I took a chance on ordering antique linens from a source in Hungary who e-mailed me and he’s been an awesome source for over four years.  Some of my local pickers first sent me an e-mail, sharing pictures of their regular finds, asking if I could like to buy from them. Well, most recently, I received an e-mail from a reader who specializes in antique English advertising containers and jars. Um.  Yes, please.  I had actually splurged on an anchovy container when I was at the Fancy Little Flea in Memphis and I immediately started searching for more, but they were too costly to buy and resell. Her prices were great, so I placed an order and they just arrived a few days ago. Oh my goodness…  It

more Lucketts goodies…

I thought I would share a few more goodies I acquired for Lucketts this week. Wooden spoons, more Bakelite, and lots of ironstone!  Platters, pitchers… …sweet little creamers and gravy boats… …and this very unique brush box… At least, it’s the shape of a brush box, but I’ve never seen ones with holes in the lid.  Usually, those are there to let out steam, so I’m not sure what purpose they would serve in a brush box.  It’s also a little wider.  Maybe it was for a steamed veggie, like asparagus?  Any ideas? And, one of my pickers has hit a streak of these canning sets and she found another one… We also got in another shipment of Savon de Marseille soaps. That bowl was heavy!!  Kriste took a few pictures while I held it and, when we were done, she said, “Good for you for that!”  And I even

white ironstone heaven

During my 15+ year love affair with white ironstone, I have come home with some pretty sweet ironstone hauls. Child’s play. Yesterday, I walked into white ironstone heaven at a local thrift store.  One of my “picker” friends tipped me off on the treasure trove and I couldn’t resist making the drive to check it out. My friends, what you are looking at is stacks and stacks of Buffalo China from the 1960’s at a thrift store and the picture above only shows a fraction of it.  (You can find .) So, a little lesson on Buffalo China.  It’s called that, because it was made in Buffalo, New York.  It’s marked on the bottom, usually with a green buffalo, and conveniently has the year it was made included in the hallmark, which is how I know these pieces are from the 1960’s.  Buffalo China is also called “restaurant ware”, because it
