antique pine hutch

I went out antiquing last week and I wasn’t planning on purchasing any furniture.  But, I just can’t help myself.  Furniture seems to find me the way a lost dog often seems to end up in the path of a dog-lover. I mean, literally…within five minute of shopping, I spotted and purchased this beautiful step-back hutch… It has the original wavy glass…    …and a beautiful patina… …and a working key…   It’s just one of those special pieces and, even though I wasn’t shopping for furniture and I had no idea what I was going to do with it, it was just too good to pass up. I do already have a buyer for it, but I’m contemplating keeping it, but you know my rule!  I have to have the perfect spot for it, which means I would need to displace another piece of furniture.  It’s not looking good for

a goat bell for a horse

When I was out shopping last week, I found a little goat bell.  It was inexpensive, I think $4.00, so I picked it up.  I initially envisioned using it as a Christmas decoration, with some evergreens, etc., making it into a small wreath. The leather was really dry, but a little Hemp Oil hydrated it and made it pliable again. As soon as I finished photographing the bell, a thought hit me…  I bet this would fit on my rocking horse!  How cute would that be? And sure enough, it’s a perfect fit. I will add some live greens to make it a bit more festive for Christmas, but I love it as it is, too. Some things are just meant to be… For details on the horse and how I painted it, check out THIS POST.

fun finds

I haven’t been on any big shopping trips lately, but I’ve picked up some fun things here and there that I haven’t shared here on the blog, yet.  I thought today seemed like a good day to do that. A few weeks ago, I bought this white toy truck from one of my “pickers”. I decided to keep it for now!  I happened to have just bought some old bottle-brush trees and one fit perfectly in the bed. I’ll probably paint the hubcaps at some point. Also while I was out antiquing, I picked up this German barley canister… I have a similar, larger jar in this “blue onion” pattern by my stove.  I’m going to try to find the perfect spot for this, so I can keep it. The month of December is usually a slower one when it comes to deadlines, obligations, etc., so I’m hoping to take

recent finds – quilts, ironstone & more…

When I was out shopping on Saturday, the main purpose was getting out of the house and away from the studio, but I was also hoping to find things to list in the online shop. I usually find a quilt every now and then.  Maybe a few each year.  This shopping trip, though, I found three quilts!  It was just my day when it came to finding pretty quilts at decent prices. I have always loved “penny” quilts and I found a lovely red-work one along with this sweet, colorful patchwork quilt. Both are in nice, useable condition.  The third one is in the washing machine as I type this.  It was a little dirty, so I wanted to wash it before selling it.  It’s a very pale, almost imperceptible, blue on cream pattern and it’s a gorgeous piece. Of course, I picked up some ironstone as well.  This pitcher

antique “art cabinet”

I have been pushing towards a few deadlines over the last several weeks and, while it’s all been fun work, I was really ready for a change of pace!  Jeff gave me a chance to get away on Saturday, so I went on a trek to HomeGoods and to a local antique shop.  I am almost always shopping for things to sell and I did some of that on this trip, but I also took some time to shop for myself. And I found this awesome piece… It’s an antique cabinet, obviously handmade, probably a piece some guy built for tool storage or something. It’s been well used and worn over the years, but I find all of the rough edges very endearing. And, what pushed it over the top for me is that it’s perfectly sized to store art supplies. The cubbies are long enough for brushes, pads of paper, palettes, and finished works.

$100 craigslist drafting table

I have realized that as my work changes, my workspace needs to change, too.  When I work on furniture and photoshoots, I rarely sit at a desk or work table.  I’m usually crawling around on the floor or scooting around on one of our wheely stools.  I’m in a season right now, though, where a lot of my work involves sitting, painting, sketching, and writing.  I’ve been spread out over one of our workshop tables, but it is a pretty impractical workspace.  I also get this beautiful natural light in the studio and I was set up away from the windows.  I’ve needed to set up a proper workspace for a while and I finally got the push I needed when this antique drafting table crossed my path… I found it on Craigslist for $125 and my dad negotiated the seller down to $100 and, as always, he picked it

what would fit in my carry on…

I already shared that I found several pieces in New Hampshire that I would’ve bought in a heartbeat if I had my van.  But, I didn’t. And, since my suitcase was already over 50 lbs, I could only buy things that would fit into my carry on bag. Of course, that included ironstone!  I feel like I can find ironstone anywhere I go.  This sweet old sugar jar was just $16.50.  I saw it and immediately plucked it off the shelf to pay for it.  I have loved ironstone for years, but I go through phases of what I look for and get excited about.  Right now, it’s really old pieces with fruit/nut handles on the lids.  This one has an apple… I also love the pattern on the base of the sugar jar.  I actually have the matching plates and handleless cups and they are some of my favorite. I
