Love it. Buy it?

Those of us who have the collecting/thrifting/junking gene know that it’s hard not to buy something we love, especially when it has a great price tag.  Then, we all end up at the same place…too much stuff, not enough space, but we still want to buy more.  Right?  So, what is one with this dilemma to do?  Here are some good principles to follow… First of all, clear things out of your home that you don’t love.  Have a yard sale, have a swap, take it to auction, put it on Craig’s List, give it to someone who does love and need it.  Just clear out the stuff you don’t love.  This will be a gradual process for most, so don’t clear things out to the point where you’re sitting on the floor and eating off trays!  Also, let you’re family know what you’re doing, so they can expect some

Resetting a Room

Have you been working on a room and you’re feeling stuck or it’s not looking the way you envisioned?  If so, it’s time to press the reset button and here’s how I do it.  I’ve been working on my living room for a few months, now.  When I was looking at it the other day, I realized it’s not turning out the way I wanted it to.  It is mostly, but once I added two of the curtain panels, it totally messed me up.  I had been decorating for a pretty neutral room and the pop of color and pattern from the curtain fabric began to compete with all of the pictures and accessories.  Step 1: Remove all of the pictures, accessories, and anything else from the room that you’re not sure about.  Only keep what you really love or need.  This is a great time to move some furniture around

Dresser Makeover & New Signs

Oh, I have so much to share, I’m about to burst!!  We had the glitter letter workshop today, I have an exciting event with The Graphics Fairy coming up, I have been using every spare minute to make Christmas ornaments and decor to sell, and I scored some awesome furniture on Thursday.  I’ll share it all soon, but tonight, I’m tired, so I’m just going to show my dresser makeover and the two new signs I made for the shop. Do you remember this dresser?  I bought it at a yard sale a few weeks ago.  It was in great structural condition and someone had even sanded it down for me!  That might be a minus for some people, but it was a huge plus for me.  I painted it with a brush (the old fashioned way), sanded it heavily, and followed it with a rub of dark walnut stain.

Slipcovered Chair & Latest Finds

The dentist office called… …they want their fabric back.  Oh, why on God’s green earth would someone want to cover a chair in fabric that looks like it belongs as wallpaper in a doctor’s office?  Why would any doctor or dentist want that on their walls, anyway?  I don’t know, but they all do.  Anyway, someone did this horrible thing to these chairs.  It’s like a pretty girl wearing an ugly dress to the prom.  So, I made these girls new dresses.  They need a bit more ironing, but cut me a break…they look a lot better! My dear friend, Leslie, gave me this set of four chairs.  The shape is great, but you already know how I feel about the fabric.  I made custom slipcovers for two of them out of drop cloths.  Much better.  These are coming to the barn sale set-up with me on Monday…after being ironed.

DIY Club Tutorial & a Tea Tin Makeover

I am honored to be a guest blogger today over at the DIY Club!  I was challenged with using some of their sponsored products to come up with a DIY project and this is the result.  Would you like to know how to turn a dated burlap shade and a “scratch and dent” Goodwill lamp into something unique and chic?  Check out my full tutorial over at the DIY Club.  On another note, I mentioned that Leslie brought me a bunch of goodies to makeover when she visited me at the grand opening of Wild Rose and Co. Marketplace.  One thing I spotted in the box was a vintage tea tin.  I didn’t take a before picture of it, but you know what I’m talking about.  I decided to give it a new life by painting over the label with chalkboard paint.  I love how versatile and updated it is, now.  This would

The Making of a Sign

I am finally coming good on my promise to reveal some of my sign-making secrets.  Before you get intimidated and think, “I can’t paint.  I can’t draw.  My lettering always ends up looking all funky and like a second grader made it.”  Let me assure you that anyone can make these signs.  Start off by finding something to paint.  I prefer old doors and boards that I find at antique stores, yard sales and flea markets.  I like that they have an age to them already, so I don’t have to create that. Try to look at things in new ways.  I’ve used sides of an old crate, table leaves, and a dismantled shelf to make signs.  If you can’t find old doors or wood, though, don’t despair.  Some crackle medium, distressing and glaze can make any piece of wood look old.  The second thing you need to do is create your design.

Something For Me

As most of you know, I have been a busy girl making things for Lucketts, for my new booth, for clients and writing tutorials for HGTV.com, so my poor house has been neglected.  I’m ashamed to say that there were a few weeks where I hardly cleaned the place.  (I did clean my bathrooms, but the dust, the carpets and the floors were a disgrace!)  I finally got caught up with my cleaning and I mopped the floors, shampooed the carpets and cleaned every room head to toe.  Now, I’m feeling the itch for some “me” time.  Some girls want to go shoe shopping, read a novel or get a message.  I want to work on my house.  I still have a huge business to-do list, but I snuck about an hour of time for myself and finally made a cover for the pillow form that’s been sitting on my

Book Bundles & Birds

I decided to share another very cheap and easy home decor project today.  I love the look of old books and I’ve been fortunate enough to find some cool ones on my thrifting excursions, but what if you can’t find any old books?  No problem.  Run (or drive) to your local thrift store and pick up a stack of hard back books.  I bought mine at Goodwill for $.97/each.  Try to find books that have yellowed pages and a bit of age to them.  Most of the books I found were from the 1980’s. Using an exacto knife, cut the bound pages from the spine and remove the cover.  Bundle the books together using twine and use for display.  (Just a tip – Don’t do this to your husband’s civil war book collection on a day you’re mad at him.) These neutral book bundles are a great way to decorate a book
