primitive hutch makeover

Last week was a busy one and we got a ton of things accomplished. I’m a bit whipped from it and I need to pace myself better, but it feels good to be really productive. Here’s one of the pieces I picked up and painted this week… I spotted it on Craig’s List and immediately texted my dad to see if he could get it for me. I have been looking for a great hutch or cabinet that could be a focal point of my booth at Lucketts and I knew this one was perfect for that. It reminds me a lot of the hutch I use in the studio… I love how that one turned out, so I painted it the same way…MMSMP Mora on the inside and Shutter Gray on the outside. Here is a video showing how I prepped the piece and applied the first coat of paint…

I’ve been waiting with anticipation for months to see if the Lucketts Spring Market is happening again this year and…IT IS! Those who weren’t there last year are probably thinking, “Well, of course! It happens every year. Why wouldn’t it happen this year?” If you have an amazing memory (or you lived through it), you’ll remember that we had massive amounts of rain the days leading up to the market. In fact, one of my tents collapsed under the weight of the water before the event even started. I wasn’t the only one with woes. The amazing ladies who coordinate Lucketts were dealing with vendor spaces that were flooded out or had become mud pits, stuck vehicles and an entire 10 acre field that is usually used for parking had to be closed. They tried to warn shoppers, but the hype that usually works to everyone’s favor had snowballed and it

tips on styling a retail space

While it’s fairly fresh in my mind, I thought I would answer an e-mail question I received about styling a retail space. A couple of weeks ago, I received this e-mail from Allison of the Golden Sycamore. “I was wondering if you could give me a little advice. I feel like I’m pretty good at styling photos. I know I still have a ways to go, but I feel pretty confident about it. My booth, however, is a different story. It just looks so bland and boring. And nothing really seems to go together. I think I’ve kind of figured out part of my problem. I can style things at home with random home decor stuff I have around the house, but that stuff never comes to my booth, so I get my furniture there and it just kind of falls flat. Despite what some may think, I don’t paint everything. Most of the furniture pieces I buy are in need of some help. They’re tired, worn, spotted with water rings, sporting chipped & bubbled veneer and have seen better days. Because of that, I don’t feel the slightest hesitation about painting them. Some pieces, though, are just perfect as is. Such was the case with this oak desk… The wood and finish were in beautiful condition and the vintage glass knobs were perfect. We did have to add some new stops to the drawers to keep them from sliding all the way to the back of the desk, but that was a quick fix. Usually, I feel that painting a piece brings out the details, but the graining of the wood made the details, like the cubbies and carved embellishments, really shine. Antique Pine Table Makeover

Would you believe I still have several furniture makeovers from Lucketts to share? The past few years, I got too busy to take before & after pictures and I really kicked myself for it. This year, I made myself grab the camera and take a before of every piece AND made sure I had an after picture of each piece before it was loaded into the truck. This antique pine table was one of my favorite pieces. I guess I had a lot of favorites this year, because this is like the fifth piece I’ve called one of my favorites! I found it on my shopping trip to Virginia. It was one of the pricier pieces I bought, but I really loved it and thought it would make a nice “focal piece” in my booth. Wardrobe Makeover & 2014 Lucketts Recap Day 2

Before I get to a recap of day two at the Lucketts Spring Market, I thought I would show a before and after of one of the furniture pieces I sold there this past weekend. This is how the piece started… It was in pretty nice condition and could’ve been used as is, but I felt that paint would bring out the details of the piece much better. Cari painted the interior in MMSMP Shutter Gray and the exterior in Grain Sack. I then came in and added Ironstone to the details, lightly distressed the edges and finished the entire piece off with Hemp Oil. It turned out so sweet and I love the wood details against the painted finishes. It looked great in the space and sold fast! And that’s the whole point! In contrast to the frenzy of day one at Lucketts, day two is more relaxed.

Lucketts Recap 2014 Day 1 (Part 2)

In yesterday’s post, I showed what the space looked like before it was raided. In this post, I wanted to share some pictures of the action as it happened. First of all, thanks so much to everyone who came out! I know it was crazy just getting there and parking. For those who aren’t aware, we had about 5″ of rain the Thursday night before the market. That meant all of the grassy fields that are usually used for parking were a muddy mess. Ten acres had to be closed off, because they were too water-logged to use. The lots that were useable were muddy and not big enough for the crowds that came. So, people started parking along the little two lane road that runs through the one-stoplight town of Lucketts, VA. You can imagine what craziness that caused. People were parking right on the side of the road and

Lucketts Recap 2014 Day 1 (Part 1)

Well, another Lucketts Spring Market has come and gone. I’ve made it clear to everyone that I will be chilling, watching a lot of Netflix and catching up on some things this week. I will do work if and when I want to! A sort of stay-cation. I have a lot to share about the spring market this year, so it’s going to be split into several posts. It’s just too much for one!
