put a rabbit painting on it

I have learned over working on many rooms in the homes we’ve lived in through the years that there are always little loose ends that languish until you get sick of looking at them.  For me, it’s often installing shoe molding or touching up trim for some reason.  I was pretty good at keeping a list of the final touches on our kitchen renovation so I could complete them and check them off the list.  I wanted to be able to call the kitchen completely done instead of having to add an asterisk every time I shared the room.  It’s done except for this, this, and this.  That just gets annoying and I wanted it to be done period.  But, there was one lingering thing that I’ve been simply ignoring and removing from photos – the doorbell.  See it above the doorway to the hall? The doorbell is hardwired, so

more of the Christmas kitchen 2023

I am finally rounding the Christmas decorating corner and the finish line is in sight.  I have had the dining room covered in bins, ornaments, garlands, and ribbon and I’ve been using it as a staging area for the rest of the decorating.  Slowly, I’ve been using the decorations and the dining room is getting cleaner in the process.  I’m just about ready to put away anything leftover and make the dining room table look pretty.  But first, here is a little corner of the kitchen I dressed for the season… With all of the beautiful things happening in the kitchen, this antique wooden shelf from Dreamy Whites is a favorite.  Maria’s pieces are always a splurge, but they are also some of my most prized pieces.  It’s one of those unique finishing touches that makes this space mine.  I’ve also always wanted a place to display my antique ironstone

Christmas Kitchen Window

When it came to decorating for Christmas this year, I was, of course, most excited about decorating the kitchen.  If you missed it, we renovated our 1970 kitchen this year and completely transformed a chopped-up, dated space into an Edwardian-inspired modern classic kitchen.  You can catch up on the details of the renovation HERE.  But today, I want to show how I decorated our new kitchen window for the holidays… First of all, I made a garland swag with two pine garlands and two cedar garlands.  I then tucked in some juniper sprigs, homemade orange slices, and dried limes. I also used some velvet ribbon in the center of the swag.  Sadly, almost everything is sold out this season, but I imagine most of it will be available again in 2024. To hang the garland, I tapped in nails in the top of the trim so the holes wouldn’t be

Kitchen Christmas wreath

I have been gathering materials to make a wreath to hang on our kitchen range hood since October in the hopes that I could make a tutorial and share all of the exact materials for those who would like to make one as well.  As I shared in the post about the Christmas race last week, almost all of those materials are now sold out!  But, I’m going to share it anyway so those interested can tuck it away for next year or put together a wreath with similar elements.  Perhaps you already have some of these components or can use live greenery.  It’s nice to have the exact items if you’re trying to replicate a look, but it’s certainly not necessary. I haven’t hung anything on the range hood since we built and installed it (you can read about that HERE), but I envisioned a wreath on it for

adding a new shelf to an antique pine hutch

When it comes to knocking projects out, I have learned that it helps to pay attention to the tools and materials I have out and try to hit projects that need those same tools and materials.  For example, while the sewing machine is out and threads are all over the floor, it makes sense to work on several sewing projects on my list.  If I have ceiling paint out, let me complete a couple of ceilings instead of just one.  It can add a lot more time to a project that might’ve been short and sweet, but it does save time and sometimes money in the long run.  So, when we were buying pine boards for the mantel project and had our job site table saw set up on the driveway, I decided to pick up a rough pine board to make another shelf for the antique pine hutch in

custom-built shelf by the side door

One of the downsides to taking down the walls in the kitchen is that we lost the “mud room” area.  It was small, but it at least provided a landing area for shoes and such that was hidden from view.  But, I felt like the light and space we would gain was a good trade, so the walls came down. I thought initially I would add a piece of furniture along the wall by the side door as a place to tuck shoes, drop keys, and hang bags, but it would block the traffic path much more than I thought.  So, I decided to shift gears and build a shelf to define a bit of a “landing area.”  Of course, it’s still in the kitchen and in full view, so it’s not a place to hang everything people bring in the door.  The boys will still keep their backpacks in

kitchen eating area light fixture & lamps plus giveaway

We’re paying a little visit back to the kitchen again in this post!  We are still working on little finishing touches and I am sure we always will be.  I don’t ever call a room done, but done for now.  There should always be some wiggle room for more change.  Today, I am sharing about the new light in the kitchen eating area.   As a full disclosure, this light fixture was a part of a partnership with Lamp’s Plus.  I’ve worked with them before on lights for the exterior of the house as well as for the hallway, and they had a great fixture for the kitchen eating area.  There are giveaway details at the bottom of the post, so don’t miss that! Initially, I wasn’t planning on putting a new light over the eating area.  We opted for recessed lights to give an all-over wash.  I left open the option

a little shelf tweaking

We finally started school in our neck of the woods, which is both cause for celebration and mourning.  I am excited for the rhythm that comes with the routine school days force us into.  I find I am more focused and productive within that framework.  I also enjoy having the house to myself so I can flit around, play my music as loud as I want, and work wherever it suits me on that particular day.  With all of the good that comes from it, I know I will miss the slower mornings and loose schedule.  But, I am starting to feel the energy and excitement that comes from the change of season and I’m buzzing with ideas for sewing and painting projects.  There’s lots to do and lots to share, but between shopping for school supplies, having people over to enjoy the pool, squeezing in appointments, and shipping out
