updated kitchen pictures

Before we dive into the pictures, I had to share something funny.  My mom read my post from yesterday and immediately got her painting clothes ready.  You see, she helps me on Wednesday nights when the boys are at Awana and she knew after reading the post that we would be painting my guest room!  She knows me so well and was, of course, right.  We painted most of the guest room tonight.  I still need to do the dormer, ceiling and trim, but we made some good progress.  It’s coming together bit by bit. I also worked on some photo shoots today.  I have a freelance magazine shoot & article I’m working on as well as images for the look book and updated pictures for “my home” page on the blog.  I shot some of the kitchen today… The picture above was taken today and the one below was

painting the last bar stool…finally

Back in June of 2013 I painted the bar stools at my kitchen counter…well, two of them, anyway.  I don’t recall why I didn’t get to the third one, but I’m sure I just got busy with other things and the idea of painting one bar stool seemed a bit boring.  You can see the stools peeking up over the bar in this picture… I was getting the itch to paint some furniture and finish projects that have been abandoned, so I finally got the chair done.  I wanted it to match the other two, obviously, so I painted it in French Enamel. In my photo shoots, I use vintage brushes, ironstone mugs, silver spoons and grain sack fabric as drop cloths, but in reality, I use plastic cups and wooden stir sticks and real drop cloths. A nice thing about milk paint is that you can use it inside

sneak peek, butcher block update & color of the month

I finished up the dresser today and here’s a preview of it… This is one of those pieces that I needed to adjust my plan as I worked.  There were all sorts of quirks…with the piece, not with the paint.  I’ll share how I dealt with all of those issues and, of course, show how the dresser looks.  Keep an eye out for that post next week. Photo shoots in my kitchen almost always involve me having to do the dishes and then cleaning up my sink.   Just wanted to let you know my sink is used and isn’t always so shiny. So, how is the butcher block holding up since we installed it this summer?  Beautifully!  There is one mark by the sink where I kept my soap bottle sitting… See the oval ring?  It hasn’t been an issue with the hand soap, so I guess there is

Range Hood Tutorial & More…

For those who were interested, the tutorial on how we made the range hood in our kitchen is now live on HGTV.com HERE.  This was one of my favorite projects, because it made a huge difference in making the kitchen look custom and higher end. Speaking of my kitchen, I have an exciting photo shoot coming up, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for cool kitchen things.  I actually already have a pretty ridiculous collection of serving pieces, linen, dishes, etc., but the stylist asked if I could change out the preserved boxwood topiaries for some herbs.  I’ve always wanted rosemary topiaries, so it was a good occasion to get them.   Don’t get too used to seeing them, though.  I’m sure I’ll kill them in no time and I’ll be back to preserved boxwoods, which have gained my affection due to the fact that they won’t die. I’ll

Milk Painted Bar Stool

After a few years of leaving them as I bought them (I know, what is wrong with me?), I finally started painting my Target bar stools.  I actually just painted one to experiment, before I did the other two. I love how it pops against the white cabinets and wood counters now.  Before, the stools were blending into the counter and floors and felt a little “eh.” This stool was painted in two coats of MMSMP  in French Enamel and then heavily distressed with 100 grit sand paper followed by 180 grit to soften the scratches a bit.  I quieted the paint color and finished the chair with MMS Antiquing Wax, So even though there’s lost of visual texture, the finish is butter smooth.   I know my boys are going to help me with distressing these, so why not take it to the extreme?  I think it also gives these off-the-shelf

Polenta & Veggie Stuffed Red Peppers

I decided today to share one of my favorite recipes of late…polenta & veggie stuffed red peppers.  And they are around 275 calories for an entire pepper! Now, I’ve never been a huge fan of peppers…until I overlooked the price tag and bought red, orange and yellow peppers.  Oh my.  They are sweet and delicious cooked or raw.  So, the idea of stuffed peppers never appealed to me until I explored the world of rainbow peppers.  I found a few different recipes, tweaked things to my tastes and this is what I came up with… Start out by cutting four large red peppers in half… …remove the ribs… …and rinse out the seeds… Place all of the halves in a lightly greased baking pan. Preheat the oven to 425.  Chop up two zucchinis and one yellow squash and one small sweet onion.  (I usually add asparagus, too, but we were out.)

How we installed our undermount sink…

I knew I wanted to install a new sink when we were putting in new counters.  The sink we had was an enamel-coated cast iron sink that was full of scratches and chips and water was always hanging around the lip.  So, when I was looking for a new sink, I considered a farmhouse-style sink, but I already hated having a white sink (think coffee settling into all of the fine scratches and looking grungy all the time) and I thought it would be a real pain to retrofit the cabinets to accommodate one.  I also didn’t think that style of sink would suit this house.  With that fleeting thought shot down, I immediately went to an undermount sink. I looked for one that was a similar size to the current sink we had, so the plumbing would line up.  I also knew I wanted stainless steel.  We had a 20+ year

Kitchen Reveal & Sources

It’s finally done!  Well…you know what “done” means in my house.  It means I’m done with it for now.  Although, aside from changing paint colors and/or accessories, I don’t think there’s much more I can or need to do to this room.  I’ve always been drawn to white cabinets with dark counters (wood or black) and a wood or white floor.  Now I have it!   Here’s a tour… As I was going through the list of things we’ve done to the kitchen, I realized that almost all of the materials used for this makeover were free.  Well, not free, but traded for advertising on my blog or promotion through a post.  I’ll try to give you a rough idea of costs, though, so you can get a realistic idea of executing this look (or parts of it) in your home.  With the exception of laying the floor tile, we
