a slice of life

favorite Ikea finds

We live about 90 minutes away from an Ikea, so I don’t go there often.  Maybe once every three or four years.  On Friday, my mom and I made the trek and spent the day “doing Ikea.”  It really is like a theme park.  Wear comfortable shoes, get your map, make your lists, so you don’t miss anything.  Make your plans, so you hit lunch at the right time.  It’s an event. I went with a pretty sizable list of things I wanted, mostly for home organization projects I’ve been chipping away at when I have the time. It’s the kind of store where it’s easy to keep throwing things in the cart, though, even with a focused list.  That’s just $5.00 or $1.50 and who knows when I’ll be back at an Ikea again, so I had better get it! (Those woodland cookie cutters were totally an impulse buy,

the little things | wooden spoons

I think it’s easy to be intentional when making choices about the big things you bring into your home.  The big commitment items like sofas and china hutches and statement pieces.  I don’t think it’s quite as easy to be intentional about the little things.  Things that are utilitarian and inexpensive. But, if you’re going to buy something, anything, even something little, relatively cheap, and utilitarian, why not buy something you love?  Imagine your home filled just with things you love. Well, that’s the goal, anyway. I’ll be the first to say that I don’t love all of my kitchen utensils, but I’m working towards it.  I feel very neutral about my can opener and pizza cutter, but I love my wooden spoons. I look for ones of different shapes, sizes and tone of wood, so they each have their own personality and I can justify having way more than necessary.  (There is an

vintage-style barstools

I can’t believe that I’ve had new barstools for months and haven’t shared the details until today!  I used to document every tiny change that happened in my house, but now that I work at the studio most of the time, my house is just my house, so I don’t take pictures as regularly as I used to.  So, finally…these are the new barstools… A few months after we moved into our house, my mom and I were out shopping and came across these barstools from Target… I painted them in MMS Milk Paint French Enamel finished with Antiquing Wax, but they were originally a mid-tone wood with a glossy finish.  They were on clearance and I liked the style, so we tracked down three of them at two different stores.  I’ve been very happy with them, but one broke a few months ago and, since I bought them on

the evolution of my house | part 4 | the kitchen

And now, it’s time to walk through the evolution of my kitchen.  This is part four in a series where I’m showing how each room in my house has evolved over the nine years since we moved in. I have always loved a good before and after, but the truth is that there are usually a lot of steps between those two pictures.  In the case of my house, each room has been years in the making…pieces bought and sold, projects completed and everything eventually brought together to make each room what it is today.  I’ve learned a lot as I worked on each space and I think my decorating style has become more focused and refined in the process.  It is my hope that this series encourages you, as you see that each “after” was a slow process, not an overnight change. So, this is what the kitchen looks like today…

10 minute decorating | “antique” bread board

I was asked by one of my blog buddies, Laura from Finding Home, to join a “10 minute” challenge each month along with some other awesome bloggers.  I tend to take on projects that are more involved..refinishing, painting, upholstering, etc., so I like the idea of pinning myself down each month to do something simple and quick. The theme for this month is “10 minute craft”. As soon as I saw crafting was the theme, I went blank.  I’m not a crafter!  I know there’s a fine line between a DIYer and a crafter, but when I think about doing a 10 minute craft, my creativity just tanked.  So, I went back over things I’ve made over the past few weeks and I found something that was quick, great project… …”antique” bread boards.  I have been collecting bread boards and cutting boards for years, mostly from yard sales, auctions, antique shops,

Christmas decorating | the kitchen

I got out of bed this morning and was ready to do some more Christmas decorating.  I had toyed with the idea of going to the studio and doing some work there, but the kitchen was calling my name.  It needed a bit of cleaning and I really wanted to give it some festive touches.  In typical “Marian-fashion”, I got so into what I was doing and didn’t want to stop, so breakfast didn’t happen until 11:00 and a shower didn’t happen until 2:15.  I throughly enjoyed the process, though, and the result. The range hood is my favorite part.  The boxwood wreath is around the cow head (Julia) year round, but I tied some homemade wool poms around her neck for a little something extra.  I nestled some greenery, pine cones, nuts, dried artichokes and more poms along the “mantle” and hung mini stockings filled with cinnamon sticks and fresh evergreen

a fresh way to organize

I’ve been working on organization for the past year or two, off and on when I have the time.  And I’ve been getting better and more proficient at decluttering and organizing with every pass.  I started with getting rid of the obvious items.  Then, I took it further and got serious and asked myself why I had certain stuff.  I think I just got used to the things around me, so I didn’t even think it.  But, if I don’t really love it or need it, why is it in my house?  Does it matter how much I paid for it or who gave it to me or how nice of a thing it is?  On a very rare occasion, it does.  Most of the time, though, it only dictates how I get rid of it.  Do I sell or donate the item or try to keep it in the family?  But I’ve

Butcher Block Counters

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about my dream for our kitchen.  I wanted to do a little something like this… Now, I fully acknowledged then (and now) that there wasn’t a darn thing wrong with that kitchen.  The cabinets were a pretty hickory and the laminate counters were in great condition, the layout is awesome and even the linoleum floors were very nice.  It just wasn’t my taste.  I like cool colors…blues and whites.  And everything about this kitchen was earth-toned and beige and just didn’t feel like me. So, one day I got the paint and the hardware and started to transform the space. I got the paint and hardware through my partnership with True Value (it was my first year on their Blog Squad).  The floor was provided by Home Depot to promote the Dal-Tile line.  I was so happy with how dramatic the
