Bathroom Updates & Painting

I painted my master bathroom a few weeks ago and have since been tweaking and adding to it.  Seriously…is a room ever really, really done?  Anyway, I added a small wooden bench for my toddlers to use for tooth-brushing and hand-washing and light switch-reaching.  And I stole this basket from another room in the house to store our toilet paper in.  Why not make the utilitarian attractive?  The other perk is I can always see when we’re down to the last roll. I also found the perfect mirror to replace the not-hideous-but-not-my-taste oak framed mirror.  I refinished this mirror frame to go in our bedroom, but it hit me that it would be perfect for the bathroom.  My husband is going to hang it for me tomorrow and I’ll give you all the details about it.  And so the painting in the master bedroom begins… Wednesday nights are one of my favorites because

Small Updates

I have a lot of things in the hopper right now, but nothing’s finished, yet.  So, I thought I would give you a “progress report” on where I am and what I’ve been up to.  My white duvet cover set arrived in the mail yesterday and I am so pleased with it.  It makes my bed look like a fluffy cloud that I want to sink into.  You know…the luxurious hotel bed?  That’s what I wanted.  I’m still waiting for my chocolate brown quilt to arrive and I need to get my butt in gear and sew some pillows! The texture of this duvet is so pretty.  It’s a quilted diamond pattern that is subtle and sophisticated. After much mulling and thinking and sighing and envisioning and waivering, I decided on Irish Cream over Sea Salt for the color of the walls in my master bedroom.  I am excited about injecting

Organization Inspiration & Tips

My blog is generally about home decor, but, as some of you know, I have been in a decorating frenzie as of late.  This frenzie has included organizing just about every drawer and door I open.  One area that was in desperate need of an overhaul was my pantry.  There is a reason this pantry was such a mess.  See the drawer slides below?  Crap.  They are crap and cannot hold any weight.  These shelves fell all the time and I had to organize my pantry by weight.  I am a very mild mannered person, but these shelves falling down made my blood boil.  I would  be balancing a shelf full of dry goods in my arms and wanted to curse the person who didn’t realize that people would put soup cans and boxes of pasta in a pantry.  My hubby saw my distress over these shelves and finally replaced

It Was A Very Good Year – 2009 Recap

I started my Home Decor and Decorative Painting business, Mustard Seed Creations in November of 2008, so a lot of my firsts happened in 2009.  It was a year that exceeded expectations and I wanted to share some of my milestones with all of you.  This year I painted my first mural for a client – at a historic home in Gettysburg, PA.  I painted a Rufus Porter style mural using their home and area barns and bridges as the subjects.I painted my first custom piece of furniture for a client.  It was a little frightening to pick up a treasured piece of furniture and paint it for someone else.  Yikes!  It was a great success, though. I spent my first day painting outside the shop that sells my furniture and accessories in May at the Gettysburg Antique show.  It was a great sales day for my business and the

Favorite Small Projects for 2009

(As you read this, I am probably in a car with toddlers and teenagers on a trip down to Lynchburg, Virginia to celebrate New Year’s Eve at Liberty University’s Winter Fest.  For those of you who don’t know, I am a youth pastor’s wife, so trips like these are a regular thing in my life.  I’ll be rocking out to Skillet and Switchfoot, while chasing my two toddlers around the arena.  Never fear, I have posts scheduled while I’m away and the hotel has WiFi and I’ll have my laptop.  Make sure you visit New Year’s Day for our Furniture Feature Friday link party.  It’s a little different this week…you can share any furniture posts from the past year, so make sure you join in.  Ok, on to today’s post!) I have always done little projects around my house, not realizing that there was a whole blog world out there

Any Color Experts Out There?

(Wait a minute…as a decorative artist, I am supposed to be one. Why is it easier to pick colors for other people?) I mentioned in my last post that I got $150 in Hobby Lobby gift cards for Christmas and I knew right away that I wanted to buy fabric for my master bedroom. This room has been a challenge for me and I am about to paint it for the 5th time in 3 years! Craziness, I know. I just can’t get settled in a color. I am constantly changing things, moving furniture in & out of my house, and trying new looks that I have a fear of commitment. This fear has kept my house in the blahs for long enough, so I bit the bullet and bought $100 worth of fabric and trim. This is what I settled on… It’s a sophisticated pallet of aqua, brown and
