home projects completed in 2013

It’s been quite a year for changes in our home!  I left my space as a vendor at Lucketts in January and that freed me up to work on my home more.  We had been putting off a lot of projects because I was so busy with my retail space, so now I actually had time to work on things for me!  I also ended up with a lot of home-related freelance projects for the kitchen and master suite, so those helped push me along. It’s awesome when your business and DIY to-do lists are one and the same! As I was putting this post together, I can hardly believe how much we accomplished.  Here are the main projects we worked on… We kicked off the new year by installing new engineered hardwood floors in our family room and master bedroom. We repaved our driveway, which isn’t very fun or

wiped out, great gifts & more for sale

Oh my word.  My online shop sold out of just about everything, so I spent most of the day packing up orders.  I need to figure out how to set up a more efficient workflow.  I ended up going up and down steps for each order, so it was my workout as well.  Multitasking at its finest. The guy at the post office was thrilled, as you can imagine, when I showed up with over 30 packages to mail.  Like I said, I need to get more efficient and my husband’s going to help me with that come January. I was planning to list more ironstone today, but my stash of boxes, bubble wrap and shrink wrap were pretty much wiped out, so I need to replenish my supplies before I list more. While I sent a lot of packages out into the world today, I received some as well.

Jewelry for Dressers

One of the fun parts about giving a dresser a makeover is accessorizing it with pretty knobs.  Think of hardware as the jewelry for dressers; a way to complete the look and take it to the next level.  When I first started refinishing furniture, I was partial to clear glass knobs.  I bought a huge lot of them on eBay and put them on everything.  In recent years, though, I’ve started to branch out into metallics, colored glass, ceramic, wood, tortoise shell, clay…many different materials and finishes.  Often when I’m working on a piece, I’ll try several knobs to see which one makes the piece sing.  The one I like most sometimes surprises me and I’ve become more bold in the knobs I try. I recently put together a collection of some of my favorites from around eBay… …knobs that are chunky glass…  …colored glass… …brass bin cup pulls… …and more.  Click HERE to

Ironstone & an Ektorp Sofa Review

I mentioned I got a new haul of ironstone last week.  Well, here it is… Not only is it a lot of ironstone, but a lot of really great pieces including this four piece tureen set with platter, lid and ladle. The details on the handles are really pretty.  I love this piece, but I already have a few tureens, so I’ll be selling it. Another stunning piece is this large compote.  It’s chippy, but I’m cool with that. …some sugar jars… …lidded casseroles, a couple of butter dishes, butter pats, pitchers, small plates… …platters… …and a huge footed bowl (behind the pitcher.)  Lots of ironstone goodness.  I need to figure out what I want to keep and put a collection together to sell.  I will list some in my online shop, but let me know if there’s something you’re interested in.  I am a little nervous about shipping ironstone,

Sutton Place Designs & a Frosty Fern

One of the amazing things about this blog world is getting to know gifted, talented, awesome entrepreneurs.  Not only have I gotten to know some of them, but I’ve had the privilege of partnering with some of them.  One of those ladies is Ann of Sutton Place Designs.  I got to know her a few years ago when she introduced herself through e-mail and then sent me two big boxes of “samples”.  Pillows, runners, stockings…everything was so pretty and I was sold on working with her.  That has materialized in a lot of ways.  I’ve bought things from her to sell at Lucketts, I’ve sent her fabric I wasn’t going to use, she has sponsored my blog and she has sent me goodies now and then. Well, I just got some more goodies from her… I saved every little scrap of grain sack fabric from my sewing projects and sent

Family Room

speaking of…

I went to get my hair cut and colored today, which is always a treat, but it does take a lot of time.  When I got home, I was ready to make the most of the two hours I had before I needed to pick the boys up from school.  I walked into the family room and saw my new rug from Pottery Barn had arrived.  It’s the Heathered Chenille Jute Rug.  It was in our room at the inn we stayed at in Charlottesville and it was just what I was looking for.  Fortunately, it had a tag on the bottom, the rug was still available AND it was on sale!  It’s natural jute, so it’s neutral and provides great texture, but it’s also soft, so we can play on it and exercise on it, which is important.  I bought my other jute rugs off Joss & Main, since

Gift ideas for mom…

Those who have read my blog for a while know what a special lady my mom is.  She has been one my biggest cheerleaders in life and in my business journey.  Everyone’s been supportive of me, but she was the one who said, “Do it!  Do it and we’ll help.”  So, as I’ve been curating some collections on eBay, I wanted to include a collection of gifts chosen just for her.  It was fun to window shop for my mom and here are some things I selected… I know it’s not glamorous, but I absolutely love my Oreck Steam-It Mop.  A few of us chipped in and bought it for my mother-in-law last year because I love it so much.  I think my mom would enjoy it, too.     A few months ago, my mom tripped and fell and her iPad took the brunt of the fall and the screen
