dear reader | to the one who keeps making the same decorating mistakes

Dear Reader (to the one who keeps making the same decorating mistakes), We should start a club.  We’ll call it the “I have not learned my lesson” club or the “Oops, I did it again” club.  (Hey!  We have a theme song if we call it that.) We can have meetings and everything. “Hello.  My name is Marian.” Psst.  This is where you say, “Hi, Marian.” “I just had to repaint my walls for the third time, because I have not learned my lesson.  I know I should buy test pots and paint a swatch to make sure I like the color first, but I feel like swatches are for weenies and I’m not scared of color and I want my walls painted yesterday, so I’m going to buy $75 worth of paint and spend an entire day painting a room that I’ll hate by dinner time.” I imagine a

dear reader | to the one with a “stuff problem”

Dear reader, A few minutes after I put my sons to bed a few weeks ago, I heard the sound of feet on the steps. “Mommy?”  My oldest son had crept out of bed with something on his mind.  I walked around the corner to the bottom of the steps.  “What is it, buddy?” Earlier in the evening, we talked with him about buying a new bike.  He had outgrown the one he had in ability and size.  I thought he would be dreaming of the new bike, but instead, he was distressed about the fate of his old one. As we got into the conversation a bit further, with a frog in his throat and tears welling up, my tender-hearted nine year old confessed, “It’s just sometimes hard for me to let go of things that I’ve had for a long time and I really enjoyed.” His moment of raw emotion

white splint basket

If you’ve been reading my posts over the past few weeks, you know that I have a new-found love for baskets.  I collected a lot of them to sell at Lucketts and I enjoyed using them as props around the studio.  During one of my shopping trips, though, I bought a basket for myself. It’s this beautiful, antique splint basket with chippy white paint… Splint baskets are made out of thin wood strips, so they are lot sturdier than baskets made from woven reeds, rushing, branches, etc.   I haven’t seen one before with chippy white paint, though, and that’s what drew me to it.  It has just the right balance of chipping paint with the wood peeking through. And how about that pie safe?!  I mentioned it in a post a few weeks ago, but I haven’t shared much about it. I had seen it in an antique store

a harvest of lavender

A few years ago, I planted some lavender on either side of the steps leading to the front door of our house.  It was sort of a whim, but I love how it’s grown over the years and the scent and color it adds to the entrance.  I’m a homebody, anyway, so I love walking up those steps to the front door, but the lavender is an extra perk. It was getting a bit unruly this year, though, and I was encouraged to cut it back by people who know a lot more about gardening than I do.  I sort of hated to cut it, but I was told it’s best for the plant and prevents them from becoming woody. So, I went out in the cooler temperatures of the evening, armed with an antique apple basket and new pair of shears, to trim back the lavender. I didn’t realize how much

using old quilts every day

I definitely have a thing for old textiles.  I love table linens, fabric, clothing, embroidery, quilts…you name it.  I’m always drawn to the “linen lady’s booth” in antique stores.  I like to look through the stacks to see if anything catches my eye.  I’m usually looking for blue and white, of course, nubby linen, pretty monograms, crochet trim…things that will compliment the decor of my home, but also pieces that I can use as-is or repurpose.  Because what is the point of having stacks of linens if you don’t ever use them? True, a stack of linens can look pretty in a cabinet, but did you know linens can get stained as much from not being used as they can from being used?  That’s a totally unscientific statement, but I have observed that they can turn yellow from starch, acquire “dust lines” at the folds, or fade in the sun.  So, use

styling tips | for home

A few days ago, I shared part one of the “styling tips” series – for retail.  Now, it’s time for part two – styling tips for the home. While styling for retail and photography is about making a space and individual items look beautiful or appealing without much regard to practicality, styling the home is about making the everyday beautiful. Styling for retail and photography is a whole other ball of wax from home styling. As an example, here is Megan’s office, a room I worked on last fall.  For the “beauty shots”, we removed the keyboard and things that weren’t as photogenic, but when it came to styling the room to live in, we had to take the keyboard, paperwork, printer, recording equipment, etc. into account. It was an office and creative space, after all.  It wouldn’t have made sense to banish the keyboard to the garage or the

gardening season two begins…

Just an FYI that the first Lucketts Leftover online sale will start tomorrow (Thursday, June 2, at 9:00 pm EST.)  You can click over to my online shop HERE. Our house has a ways to go before it looks really charming from the curb.  It has a 1940’s sweetness about it and the landscaping is getting there, but we’ve put much more time and attention to the inside of the house and it’s only been in the past couple of years that we have started really working on some projects outside. But, it’s all coming along. Now that Lucketts is over, I hit a local nursery to get some flowers for the window boxes and spent some time sprucing things up. See the dead weeds in the window boxes?  Yeah, nice.  The topiaries, Eugenia, flanking the front door are leftovers from Lucketts.  I shopped my own sale! The holly bushes

indigo dyed napkins

A few of you spotted (and asked about) the blue napkins I used in my table arrangement last week… …so, this post is all about them. These napkins are actually antique linen napkins from my Oma.  They look quite lovely in the picture below, but they were actually a very yellowy-cream that I never cared for… The color was so off that I never used them.  I always went to prettier white and cream linen napkins.  They are so pretty, aside from the color, and it was a shame they weren’t being used, so when I was working on an indigo dying project for a freelance client, I decided to “throw them in the pool”. (As an aside, I was slightly insane and accepted six freelance tutorials that had to be completed in two weeks, just before Lucketts!  It definitely put the pressure on, but it was worth squeezing them
